To say I've got my winter wardrobe sorted?

46, size 16, basically the archetypal middle class, middle aged, working mum.

I wouldn't call it a 'capsule' wardrobe, but I think I'm at a stage where I don't need anything different, so any future purchases are just replacements for what I have.

Here's what it comprises:

Four pairs of near identical Sweaty Betty ankle cuffed yoga pants (all black). Not too sporty, can be worn day to day.

8 or so thin under layers in black or cream (largely uniqlo heat tech).

4 round neck cashmere jumpers (from M&S or Cashmere and Cotton). In black, electric blue, brown, and beige.

One pair of wide leg dark navy jeans.

One pair of ankle cuffed mum style jeans.

One pair black cigarette trousers.

One boxy cardigan (oatmeal).

Three mock turtleneck jumpers (one black, one navy, one grey).

One ski style puffer.

One Sweaty Betty waterproof trench coat.

One tailored wool coat.

Two cashmere snoods.

I do have other clothes, but so far this winter I've basically worn this on rotation.

Holy moly why do you have so many clothes?!

I've got two dresses

one skirt

One top

One cardigan

One pair of boots

One coat which is well over 10 years old 😄

All of that does me all year round. I just wear the coat over clothes in colder weather.

I can't believe someone has that many clothes!!

Urgh why the overconsumption?!

i only own 1 dress and find it’s suitable for all occasions. Nobody needs more than 1 item of clothing in their wardrobe it’s just greedy.

Agreed. Made from sackcloth I hope!

Do you wear the yoga pants outside of home? I’d love to wear things like that but worry I’d feel like I’m wearing pyjamas or not properly dressed. What shoes do you wear with them?

Yep, I wear them outside for day-to-day activities, going for a walk, shopping, lunch, school pick up, etc.

I wear them with trainers (either Nike air Max or New Balance) in neutral colours (black or cream).

When paired with a black cashmere jumper, and a coat or soft blazer, they're not at all pyjamery.

If its chilly, I wear them with grey cashmere leg warmers. But those might not be to everyone's taste 🤣🤣

Edited to add.. I'm not sure I'd wear them so freely if they didn't have ankle cuffs, if they were baggy, they'd feel more pyjamery.

Same here. One dress, one onesie.

This is a joke surely, unless you are really impoverished and have had all your clothes stolen?

I have more than 50 skirts alone. Meh. Fashion is my thing and I will never have or want a capsule wardrobe! Not even now I am 55 ;-)

I just cover myself in mud, I add a few twigs for festive occasions.

Interesting, I might give it a go. Thanks for this thread. I’m about your age and size and struggle to get a good balance of comfort and style these days.

Minimalists forego the ashes, I'm assuming.

greglet · 27/12/2025 18:58

I would need more tops than that. Trouser selection sounds about right, though.

I own other tops, but the thin underlayer + jumper approach works a vast majority of the time.

I've got a good rotation of wearing a cashmere jumper twice on non sequential days, and then running it through the 14-minute, 20-degree, slow spin wash with Woolite.

Other things I rotate-in as needed are a navy and a cream silk shirt, and three cream 'shell tops' (all slightly different).

Mydadsbirthday · 27/12/2025 23:22

But what do you wear to work OP?

This sounds very much like what I wear for casual but I'm in the city 3/4 days a week and SB yoga pants would not fly!

And to other posters who claim they only have one top and one dress - ok sure. Some of us work outside the home and can't turn up at the office day after day in the same top 😬

EmeraldRoulette · 27/12/2025 23:27

@Rosealea how can you manage with so few clothes?! You must be constantly doing laundry. Well washing the same clothes over and over. I don't even have kids and I would be washing those clothes all the time!

@RobinTheCavewoman I think your wardrobe sounds lovely. And thank you for sharing that because I didn't know sweaty Betty did those. They look good and very useful.

Bjorkdidit · 28/12/2025 03:18

Have you actually bought this item and if so what is the sizing and quality like?

I looked at the website and my spidey senses were set off by all items being on sale with all sizes in stock for all items.

This never happens so prompted me to look for the returns and sizing only to find there's no sizing info except an implausible claim that they're 'standard' and all returns need to be sent China at the buyer's cost.

So it sounds risky if either the sizing is off or quality not what you'd expect for the price, ie at least M&S or Uniqlo but not Primark/H&M.

TheRavenKingsDaughter · 28/12/2025 03:52

Interesting, @Bjorkdidit … That website declines to give details on fabrics too - just comfortable fabric blend. 🧐

Why did you choose them as an example, @BlueWorkDay?

Don't you like clothes/fashion, OP? If not then fair enough, I've never wanted a capsule wardrobe myself but I guess they must be useful if you don't really care what you wear.

SouthernNights59 · 28/12/2025 05:45

I'm glad you've found something which suits you, but I would find it a bit dull myself. A capsule wardrobe is not really my thing.

One top that you wear every day that you are not wearing a dress? Laundry must be tricky? I wonder how often it needs replacing.

NeelyOHara · 28/12/2025 06:20

That’s just a turtleneck? What is mock about it? I’m confused.

Summerbean · 28/12/2025 06:32

It wouldn't appeal to me as I really enjoy wearing different styles depending on my mood, the occasion, weather etc, but have friends who wear a small amount of clothes on repeat. If it works for you that's great!

Cando6 · 28/12/2025 07:09

Sounds perfect. I hate buying clothes and miss when I used to wear a uniform at work.
My attempt at making a capsule wardrobe has resulted in my children laughing at me when I buy something new. ‘Mum have you been shopping your own wardrobe again?’ ‘You know you basically already have 5 of that top right?’
Anyway I call bullshit on owning one top. One top for gardening and going to work and hot days and cold days?

Lilyhatesjaz · 28/12/2025 07:25

I have more clothes than the op many of them 10 plus years old,and they are a lot less matched. I am currently wearing through them all, so that I wear all of them and not just my favorites and I am getting rid of anything that is too old to look good or I no longer like.
