To say I've got my winter wardrobe sorted?

BlueWorkDay · 27/12/2025 11:27

46, size 16, basically the archetypal middle class, middle aged, working mum.

I wouldn't call it a 'capsule' wardrobe, but I think I'm at a stage where I don't need anything different, so any future purchases are just replacements for what I have.

Here's what it comprises:

Four pairs of near identical Sweaty Betty ankle cuffed yoga pants (all black). Not too sporty, can be worn day to day.

8 or so thin under layers in black or cream (largely uniqlo heat tech).

4 round neck cashmere jumpers (from M&S or Cashmere and Cotton). In black, electric blue, brown, and beige.

One pair of wide leg dark navy jeans.

One pair of ankle cuffed mum style jeans.

One pair black cigarette trousers.

One boxy cardigan (oatmeal).

Three mock turtleneck jumpers (one black, one navy, one grey).

One ski style puffer.

One Sweaty Betty waterproof trench coat.

One tailored wool coat.

Two cashmere snoods.

I do have other clothes, but so far this winter I've basically worn this on rotation.

I think this is exactly it, this very plain, neutral set of clothes IS my niche...

I have worn patterns and frills, ans different necklines, and colours, and detailing... but I feel most myself in nice quality neutrals.

I like the lack of fussiness, both in choosing what to wear and how I look. I do have some more interesting accessories, but the items listed above see me through about 85% of my days.

Edited

Love it, OP. I also take a ‘uniform’ approach to my wardrobe. Life is calmer and easier and feel comfortable, lovely and ‘myself’ every day.

gogomomo2 · 28/12/2025 07:39

Whatever you like, to eaches own. Leggings are an acquired taste for non sports wear, I wouldn’t wear them myself without a dress or long tunic length top as I don’t want my bum exposed. I wear a lot of dresses and skirts myself

JaneBirkenstock · 28/12/2025 07:39

OP - do the yoga pants go baggy at the knee?

GrooveArmada · 28/12/2025 07:41

What's the "blend" though? I'm sick to death of cheap, useless polyester and not willing to buy anything that doesn't specify the materials. Is that even legal not to say what the item is made of?

idontcareabouttennis · 28/12/2025 07:59

How can it not say what it’s made of? I didn’t think that was allowed. The fact it doesn’t say makes me think acrylic all the way. I wouldn’t buy it for that reason (shame as it’s quite nice)

Agree! I almost ordered it but didn't want to go get my bank card I didn't deep dive enough. Thanks for saving me from another item of Doom!

GrooveArmada · 28/12/2025 08:41

This is why I never order from Debenhams, they don't specify the materials and that's because they're usually awful quality.

Rosealea · 27/12/2025 16:17

Holy moly why do you have so many clothes?!

I've got two dresses

one skirt

One top

One cardigan

One pair of boots

One coat which is well over 10 years old 😄

All of that does me all year round. I just wear the coat over clothes in colder weather.

I can't believe someone has that many clothes!!

This can’t be real? I fully believe most people have too many clothes but that’s not enough for living a full life in a UK climate.

Mydadsbirthday · 27/12/2025 23:22

But what do you wear to work OP?

This sounds very much like what I wear for casual but I'm in the city 3/4 days a week and SB yoga pants would not fly!

And to other posters who claim they only have one top and one dress - ok sure. Some of us work outside the home and can't turn up at the office day after day in the same top 😬

I work largely remotely (leadership role in a in a tech company) so I wear my usual clothes.

I travel for work events and meetings in various offices (about 4-6 times a year) and wear the same for travel and recreation, but slightly smarter clothes in-office.

Have you actually bought this item and if so what is the sizing and quality like?

I looked at the website and my spidey senses were set off by all items being on sale with all sizes in stock for all items.

This never happens so prompted me to look for the returns and sizing only to find there's no sizing info except an implausible claim that they're 'standard' and all returns need to be sent China at the buyer's cost.

So it sounds risky if either the sizing is off or quality not what you'd expect for the price, ie at least M&S or Uniqlo but not Primark/H&M.

Edited

I have not, that's just an example mock turtle neck.

I have one from Monki, one from Gap, and one from somewhere else that I forget.

Interesting, @Bjorkdidit … That website declines to give details on fabrics too - just comfortable fabric blend. 🧐

Why did you choose them as an example, @BlueWorkDay?

I googled, "mock turtle neck" and it was the first one that was a similar shape to the ones I own.

Don't you like clothes/fashion, OP? If not then fair enough, I've never wanted a capsule wardrobe myself but I guess they must be useful if you don't really care what you wear.

I actually.love fashion, I studied it at degree level, and I am one of the last regular readers of fashion magazines.

I know what is "in" and am pretty good at predicting what will be "in" next (ie what will make its way from the runway to the high street).

It's just not for me.

I have more clothes than the op many of them 10 plus years old,and they are a lot less matched. I am currently wearing through them all, so that I wear all of them and not just my favorites and I am getting rid of anything that is too old to look good or I no longer like.

I have a mantra, which is 'if this got broken would I buy it again?' I apply it to clothes, if the answer is "no" then I get rid of that thing.

Each to his own. Sounds a bit dull to me but we’re all different. Do you work at home or do you wear yoga pants out?

JaneBirkenstock · 28/12/2025 07:39

OP - do the yoga pants go baggy at the knee?

Not really. They're not like leggings, they're like very narrow leg, soft fabric, joggers.

I wear them day-to-day. But they're not leggings, more like soft slim leg joggers.

They're actually fairly chic with a cashmere jumper, a boyfriend blazer and smart new trainers.

grinchmcgrinchface · 28/12/2025 09:24

I think it sounds fine, i literally live in joggers/tracksuits or jeggings & jumpers in winter. 😂

PeckedOffHisNose · 28/12/2025 09:34

Do you work @Rosealea? And exercise and go to the beach and walk in the woods and go to the theatre and out with friends?

BusterGonad · 28/12/2025 09:36

Sounds a bit of a yawn fest to me. I find it hard to believe that you love fashion if I'm honest. But it must be great to know that everything matches and works well together.

I personally wouldn’t wear joggers or leggings out. The supermarket at a push maybe.

This is an interesting thread for me as I was recently thinking how much I struggle to dress for autumn and winter. Winter especially. And yet i am lucky to be able to afford to buy clothes but I just never see anything I want in this season!! I am 39, 5ft3inches and a size 8-10. I have lots of lovely dresses, skirts and blouses for summer but for winter I have the grand total of:

One Nike jumpsuit (worn mostly round the house)
Two hoodies/casual long sleeves (Sweaty Betty)
Three bodysuits (Not Basics)
One pair of jeans (Levi)
One denim mini (Sezane)
I have quite a lot of cardigans from Sezane and one from Palome.

And that's it 😅 apart from gym clothes (Sweaty Betty and Lilybod) and one dressy dress (Rixo).

I have ordered some clothes in the sales (Reiss, Toast, Louise Misha) so we'll see...

In that case I'd say it's quite odd to limit your clothes so much. You'll want to upgrade to different leg shapes soon (are cuffed trousers coming back? I feel like they were fashionable a few years ago). And even top shapes change fairly regularly. Don't you ever see something fabulous that doesn't conform to your rules? I know what is 'in' too just from looking at people and Instagram, but I don't necessarily want to wear it.

I love clothes and fashion, but I love them because I love buying things I think are beautiful. A lovely piece of embroidery, a knit with exactly the right texture, a print that makes me happy. A wardrobe of plain neutrals sounds terribly dull for someone who loves fashion.
