My mum loved Chris Rea. He was a fantastic singer. There are going to be so many jokes now about driving home for Christmas 🙁

I am That Mum.

I first saw him at Newcastle City Hall in 1979. Got all the early albums (vinyl).

Gutted. He was a diamond.

Peridot1 · 22/12/2025 15:14

Very sad. Loved his music back in the 80s.

Although he was a bit of a grumpy git when I met him in Dublin airport the day after I had seen him at a festival in Ireland and my boyfriend at the time and I tried to tell him we had seen him and really enjoyed it.

Susan7654 · 22/12/2025 15:15

CrispyK · 22/12/2025 15:17

He appeared on Gone Fishing with Reeves & Mortimer recently. Very sad just before Christmas.

NeedsRenovation · 22/12/2025 15:18

i only know ‘Driving Home For Christmas’ and ‘Road to Hell’, which means I just associate him with cars.

SleeplessInWherever · 22/12/2025 15:19

My FIL has just called him a Geordie. The Teessider in me recoiled in horror!

LadyWiddiothethird · 22/12/2025 15:19

The last Christmas my husband was alive,I was listening to Chris Rea on my way home from a night shift, little did I know I was to be widowed before the following Christmas.

I went to see Chris Rea in Birmingham several years later,he was amazing.

i know he had a lot of ill health,RIP.

I love Chris Rea. Saw him in Belfast around 1990/91. Very sad to hear this.

KidsDoBetter · 22/12/2025 15:32

Just singing along with my (young adult) kids on our christmas drive only 4 hours ago. He was young really but so much love for that song.

RIP, Chris 😢

CurlyhairedAssassin · 22/12/2025 15:39

Aah, we were only driving DS back from uni a couple of days ago and I purposely played that in the car for him. I was showing him photos of Chris Rea as he didn't know what he looked like.

zeebra · 22/12/2025 15:39

RIP Chris Rea- Sad news. I was often driving home for Christmas when I heard that song as I only tend to listen to the radio when driving. What is it about Christmas songs and artists and passing away so near Christmas? George Micheal was Christmas day and now Chris Rea three days before Christmas?
