May he rest in peace - he's given us all so much joy ❤️

My favourite singer, singing some of my favourite songs. Magical.

He was rather beautiful as young man.

NebulousSadTimes · 22/12/2025 18:05

Such memories for so many ❤

I was hearing Driving Home for Christmas whilst braving the shops this morning and was wishing they'd put one of his other songs on, it's one of the few of his that I'm not so keen on.

I used to want to sing Working On It to my boss at the time, he was always over my shoulder. How he thought his constant presence would make me go faster I don't know.

I love the piano in Steel River, so cool.

RIP Chris and thank you ❤

I remember Rea’s ice cream parlour on (I think) Linthorpe Road back in the 60s. My mum and dad used to take me there on a Saturday after we’d been shopping.

There was at least two on Linthorpe Road. One by the Albert Park Gates and another towards the top of Linthorpe Road, on the corner of Grange Road (so opposite All Saints Church).
There was also the one at the bottom of Park Road North (or South, I always confuse them) which later became the Porthole Cafe.
When l look back they were lovely - ice creams, cakes, savoury snack food, sandwiches, proper coffee from Italian coffee machines -great places for kids/young people to hang out, jukebox for some tunes. It’s such a shame places like that have gone, to be replaced by Maccys. My mum used to frequent them a lot back in the 60s.

Lovely reading everyone's memories.
Just got Alexa to play me some Chris Rea and I have had a lovely trip down memory lane. Stainsby Girls is a classic.

Makemeanonymous · 22/12/2025 18:25

I just heard the news and it has brought tears to my eyes.
I'm from the North East originally and my first job was in his native Middlesbrough. He was only a year older than me.

I just absolutely love Fool if you think it's over. It's one of my favourite songs.

I heard him interviewed earlier this year. He came over so natural. And so interesting.

This is just so sad.

Justlovedogs · 22/12/2025 17:18

So sad to hear this. I would always text my DH when I was leaving work on Christmas Eve to let him know I was Driving Home for Christmas, then play the song in the car. I can't text DH this year as he died in July, but I will play the song extra loud on Wednesday for both of them. RIP 😢

That’s lovely x so sorry @Justlovedogs

i only know ‘Driving Home For Christmas’ and ‘Road to Hell’, which means I just associate him with cars.

He loved cars. He made a film in the 90s called La Passione. The soundtrack is amazing, particularly Girl In a Sports Car.

I am That Mum.

I first saw him at Newcastle City Hall in 1979. Got all the early albums (vinyl).

Gutted. He was a diamond.

I am also that mum. I'm bloody teary about this. 😪

It’s sad, and a shame, and I do like his music, but he was 74. He had a slightly longer life than the average life expectancy for his age and sex. It’s an entirely respectable age.

No he didn't. He did well to get to 74 given he'd had serious health issues for 40 years but the average male life expectancy is 81.

My mum loved Chris Rea. He was a fantastic singer. There are going to be so many jokes now about driving home for Christmas 🙁

I've seen some of those and posts asking if he's on the road to hell. Someone replied Fool if you think it's over because his music will always live on

the80sweregreat · 22/12/2025 19:03

He was one of those old school musicians, it really was all about the music and writing for other people too. He had a gravelly voice and ‘ driving home’ is a classic Christmas song that will be played once a year forever.

canuckup · 22/12/2025 19:23

Omg at Christmas too

I loved him, road to hell is great

EachandEveryone · 22/12/2025 19:45

Yes my mum has been in bits today. They are the same age and she loved him. Our dad was a lorry driver so that song was very big in our house.

Elsvieta · 22/12/2025 21:30

Heard it on the radio and was amazed to learn he wasn't American.

Do those fake American accents employed by so many British rock singers actually sound convincing to Americans, does anyone know?

EleanorReally · 23/12/2025 05:42

very young,
i did like his music
rip

Lincslady53 · 23/12/2025 06:31

Really liked him. Many years ago, (just checked, it was 1993!) we went to Donington Park to see the last 'fun' race of the touring car season as our hero, Nigel Mansell was driving as a guest from Formula 1 - it was the height of Mansell Mania. Chris was a guest driver, and obviously, came last, or nearly last, in every heat, not being a professional driver. He was great in the paddock, signing autographs for the fans. For a bit of 'fun' the final race had the grid in reverse order, with the slowest driver starting at the front, and the fastest at the back. This would lead to much fun and over taking through the race. They lined up, I can't remember if it was before the warm up lap or after, but at the last minute Chris pulled out of the race, that he should have started in pole position. Once the race started, we understood why. The professionals were having a bit of end of term fun, bumping into cars, nudging the slower ones out of the way and trying to show Mansell, that he may have been the F1 champion but they could show him he was not necessarily the best driver. Just been wracking my brain to think of the other drivers, Tiff Needel, Will Hoy, and an Italian driving fir Alfa. Really good fun to watch, until Nige spun off, hit a stone bridge and was airlifted to hospital. But good memories of Chris Rea, my son had a signed picture of the artwork from the album Auberge on his wall for years after that, and followed his career. He had a rough time healthwise for many years. May he RIP.

I was 17, it was summer and my boyfriend at the time who was a few years older than me used to drive an open top white Morris minor and play Chris Rea on the cassette. The album was ‘Wired to the moon’. I was smitten with the boy and Chris Rea was the soundtrack to that very temporary love story ( he was a bit of a cad and had moved on by the following summer).RIP Chris x

I'm a massive fan, if only (many other) people knew how great a guitarist, songwriter and musician he actually was, he was also a fantastic and down to earth human being. As good as the songs Driving home for Christmas and The road to Hell are, they are merely a microcosm showcasing a much broader and far deeper talent. RIP Chris

fatcat2007 · 23/12/2025 07:48

Tragic, that’s so young.
