"First post nails it."

Really wish this smug and overused comment would be banned.

(I realise it's entirely predictable what will happen at the beginning of this thread...😄)

Haha!

I say "smug" because who made the person who made that comment the arbiter of what "nails it"?

I guess sometimes they're right, but it's getting a bit repetitive as an observation imo.

By that same token, what makes you the arbiter of what constitutes a ‘smug and overused comment’?

Are you against people making any sort of declarative statement, then? How would conversations work? Everything would have to be caveated by ‘in my opinion’, otherwise the speaker would clearly be declaring themselves the arbiter of something?

Well, who made anyone expressing any opinion the arbiter of what’s correct? If someone thinks the first post nails it, that’s them expressing their personal opinion - which the OP has asked for by starting a thread. If they expressed the same opinion as the first post, but in slightly different words, that wouldn’t make them the arbiter either.

If anything, I think it’s the opposite of smug. It’s saying “The first poster expressed my opinion more effectively than I ever could, and my re-hash wouldn’t add anything, so well done them.”

Incelebration · 20/12/2025 14:47

No, I'm not "sat" thinking that, I'm just reading words and understanding their entirely straightforward meaning. Saying, "First post nails it" is not synonymous with "I agree", it is, as I said, declaring that the poster thinks that opinion is correct. Although I'm not inferring any moral position from that comment.

Anyway, it's not that deep; I just find it irritating as it's overused.

We all think our opinion is correct. Otherwise it wouldn't be our opinion. You might prefer the softener of 'in my opinion the first post is correct...' but the meaning remains the same. The person still thinks their opinion is right. As do we all if we're sufficiently moved to offer it.

Incelebration · 20/12/2025 15:01

Livelovelaughfuckoff · 20/12/2025 14:52

Isn’t saying I agree also the same as saying you think the posters opinion correct?

Anyway no issues with “first post nails it” myself although if they ad “end of” I’m on your side.

It feels subtly different. Maybe...

Love your username, btw!

I'm not (the arbiter). I suppose what I'm getting at is that "I agree" sounds like an opinion whereas "First post nails it" sounds like it's stating a fact.

But yes, I see your point.

That's an interesting and fair take, yes.

Also a very cool username!

I love the “First post nails it.” comment.

However, I do wish people would actually quote the first post when they say it, because by the time I’ve reached the message that says “First post nails it” I will have long forgotten what the first post actually said.

True. Perhaps IABU in thinking the statement "First post nails it" doesn't sound like an opinion. To me it sounds more of a statement, and rather blunt, but my interpretation doesn't "prove" that is how it is intended.

OP posts:
Incelebration · 20/12/2025 15:09

Some interesting food for thought. I'm happy with (currently) over 40% of people thinking IANBU, but willing to concede that people see the expression as just another way of expressing their opinion and it's not intended to be smug.

Agreeing = smug 🤔

Well, I learn new things every day.

LizzieW1969 · 20/12/2025 15:21

Would you prefer it if PPs said, ‘first post nails it IMO’? So it's clear it's an opinion rather than a fact?

Whereas in reality don’t always specify that it’s their opinion although it obviously is. It can’t be anything else, surely?

But thinking you have the ultimate authority to declare what is right and what's wrong does.

But you started a thread about banning something you don’t like - who made you the authority to decide that?

CinnamonJellyBeans · 20/12/2025 15:33

I like it.

If it helps, it's irritating if I think the first post was a pile of nonsense..

OilyRoundTheCogs · 20/12/2025 15:37

"First post nails it" is usually true though.

Far less irritating than pages and pages of posts all saying exactly the same thing with no idea that 250 other people have said it before you.

LizzieW1969 · 20/12/2025 15:51

It's certainly the case that the first post often sets the tone for the rest of the bed. If it's a definite YABU, the thread can very quickly turn into a pile-on.

RightOnTheEdge · 20/12/2025 15:54

I've seen a lot of "As usual first post nails it!"
comments. It does sound a tiny bit like, end the thread no one else's opinion matters.
There are a lot of comments that get repetitive and a bit irritating if you are on MN a lot.
I always hate Reader I.......
Urgh, it's been done to death.

No-one. I simply said I wished it would be banned.

Yeah, a PP said something very similar earlier which I answered at 14:50.

It's true I tend to read it as someone thinking they're stating a fact, whereas I should probably see it as just another opinion.

I hate “Well this is Mumsnet so everyone is going to say (blah blah blah) but I think..” (insert apparently superior opinion)

It’s so stupid, like you are on Mumsnet right now, you are one of us 😩

And show me a thread where everyone agrees with each other.

So Tedious isn’t it?

and then there are the people who start criticising mumsnet for being contrary….does no one realise it’s different people, not a council of the same 12 people?
