"First post nails it."

Really wish this smug and overused comment would be banned.

(I realise it's entirely predictable what will happen at the beginning of this thread...😄)

OP posts:

Hinges need nails to hold them in

Screw it

HugglesAndSnuggles · 20/12/2025 08:34

Weirdly though, I’ve seen almost identical threads where sometimes the initial response is negative and sometimes it’s positive. Depending on which way it goes, depends on how hard a time the OP gets! I’m sure it proves my theory that a large number of people skim read the OPs post and then read the last few posts before deciding on which way to go.

sausagedog2000 · 20/12/2025 08:35

I agree that it’s annoying and it also sets the tone of the thread. People parrot the first few comments and this leads to a ridiculous amount of bullying on lots of threads where the poster has come to seek advice only to be piled on.

LillyLeaf · 20/12/2025 08:36

Absolutely agree. It irritates me.

FromageTime · 20/12/2025 09:24

I agree. It’s become unoriginal and predictable on here.

But I remember other annoying and over used phrases on MN - ‘gets popcorn’, ‘dons hard hat’, ‘did you mean to be so rude’ etc. 🥱 It’s not a new thing.

EleanorReally · 20/12/2025 09:25

so many annoying expressions

SmallTortoise · 20/12/2025 09:25

Oh yes. It always sounds so smug.

Vitriolinsanity · 20/12/2025 09:35

I think any contra-post starting “Erm…” should be banned. It does not make the poster come over as the great thinker and debater they believe.

DDivaStar · 20/12/2025 11:21

Not2identifying · 20/12/2025 01:38

People often say MN is unfriendly but I see that comment as being supportive of somebody's answer, publicly expressing agreement. Although we can privately signal agreement with the react button, the OP won't know if people particularly agree with something a PP has said unless posters say so. And sometimes the first post really does do a good job of answering the OP.

14th post nails it 😆

I honestly don't see how its smug, its agreeing with someone and acknowledging they've put their point across well.

Incelebration · 20/12/2025 02:02

Please could someone explain the giraffes?

I presuming someone wanted to be first to reply either something so random it wouldn’t make sense to have “first post nailed it” comments.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 20/12/2025 12:09

I hate the quoting of a long OP just to add a sentence or the quoting of a long post to either say This! or Exactly this!

thisoneiscalledbluebellsinpastels · 20/12/2025 12:17

Its a bit unoriginal but I can think of more annoying things.

eg. OP- Someone's husband is having an affair and they found evidence on his phone.

Someone will always pipe up something random and completely unrelated/utterly pointless - "how do you find the storage on the iPhone 16 btw?"

Then, two people will derail the thread and have a vicious bun fight about which is better- android or iPhone. They'll both accuse each other of being rude and/or lying. Both will miraculously have relatives that just happen to work at Apple/Google but that doesnt come out until later in the argument.
Then one will flounce off and announce they arent arguing any more. The other will mock them for it and so they return in a huff and post 50 more times until page 40 is reached.

TittyGajillions · 20/12/2025 12:24

I find it really annoying when someone says "I'm going to go against the grain here, but" and then says exactly the same thing as everyone else 🤷‍♀️

JudgeBread · 20/12/2025 02:05

Agreeing with the first poster on a thread doesn't make someone smug.

But thinking you have the ultimate authority to declare what is right and what's wrong does.

So would “first post nails it, imho” be ok by you?
I tend to take most posts as expressing an opinion rather than an ultimate declaration of authority, unless it’s something like an established scientific fact.

Yeah, a sure sign of not having RTFT. Quite often not even the first response. Odd.

BackToLurk · 20/12/2025 12:53

Mumsnet? Smug? Heaven forbid.

Precisely this

5128gap · 20/12/2025 12:59

I don't use it myself, but I do think that sometimes a person posts something that so insightful and helpful that I want to express that. The thanking function let's them know, but sometimes I want to publicly agree with them. Particularly if you know its all going to go a bit controversial later on. Its also nice if this sort of thing gets said about your own posts.

Livelovelaughfuckoff · 20/12/2025 12:59

“Fixed it for you” should be an automatic ban.

Who is saying that? They're literally just agreeing with the first post, not making any proclamation of moral omniscience.

Are you not sat here acting like you have ultimate authority over what people are saying by declaring some hidden meaning in their sentence that they didn't actually say?

No, I'm not "sat" thinking that, I'm just reading words and understanding their entirely straightforward meaning. Saying, "First post nails it" is not synonymous with "I agree", it is, as I said, declaring that the poster thinks that opinion is correct. Although I'm not inferring any moral position from that comment.

Anyway, it's not that deep; I just find it irritating as it's overused.

Obviously it's not "up to me" - I'm just expressing my irritation with it which others are of course at liberty to disagree with. But yes, I guess I'd find that less grating.

I'll concede you're probably right - it maybe isn't meant to be taken as a statement of fact rather than just an opinion.

Isn’t saying I agree also the same as saying you think the posters opinion correct?

Anyway no issues with “first post nails it” myself although if they ad “end of” I’m on your side.
