Cottage cheese

Is it just me or does nobody else like the watery runny cottage cheese from most supermarket offerings? The only acceptable cottage cheese is Longley Farm.

Longley Farm stuff has massively gone up in price, it's a rip-off now.

Forever1973 · 20/12/2025 18:17

Agree completely. Back in the 1990s, Sainsburys used to do a buffalo cottage cheese that was similar in texture to Longley farm, but that's the only other one I've ever liked. Has to be Longley full fat, the reduced fat one has a nasty bitter taste.

CalzoneOnLegs · 20/12/2025 18:17

I can’t seem to find the LF with chives anymore, not a problem in the summer when I had a chive plant but anyone else noticed this ? Maybe it’s a seasonal variety for them .

CalzoneOnLegs · 20/12/2025 18:17

@HauntedBungalow 3 tubs for £5 in Iceland/Food Warehouse

Yes, why is cream cheese so awful & watery? In Canada (& I presume the US) it still comes in proper blocks.

M&s cream cheese is lovely but I agree most now are slimy and watery. Don't know what the fuck Philadelphia are selling for eg - it's labelled cheese but it's more like pond's cold cream in a puddle.

@Forever1973 Buffalo cottage cheese ❤️ must have been beautiful

Do they do cream cheese?

Stuff in supermarkets is so watery now.

l love Longley Farm cottage cheese.

Payson Breton cream cheese is lovely and solid, but my Sainsburys has stopped selling it 😔Can't stand Philadelphia. The Lidl one is tolerable.

Oh, it was - even nicer than Longley farm and it was quite cheap too - was my lunch many a time as a student.

HauntedBungalow · 20/12/2025 18:21

Thanks @CalzoneOnLegs I'll look out for it next time I'm in one. I don't go to either very often now as I find you have to shop to the offers for it to make sense pricewise and I'd rather just buy what I want to buy.

CalzoneOnLegs · 20/12/2025 18:21

@Pushmepullyou that sounds lovely, like the Yeo Valley farm, they give the cattle mint foot baths, it’s lovely, happy cows make lovely food ❤️❤️

Lidl’s is fab

CalzoneOnLegs · 20/12/2025 18:23

@HauntedBungalow i know what you mean, it also has a short shelf life, luckily we have a Home Bargains joined to a food warehouse in a 10 minute journey so I can pop up and stock up after work.

Another vote for Lidl. No idea where I could purchase Longley Farm version, it sounds nice. At Lidl, chive is usually in stock & its a staple for me

CalzoneOnLegs · 20/12/2025 18:28

@Moanranger LF is thick, solid and creamy 10 per cent fat and has no water run off at all, it’s delicious on a jacket potato, I would be pleasantly surprised if Lidls was like this to be honest. LF available In Waitrose, food warehouse / Iceland and Asda as far as I know.

HauntedBungalow · 20/12/2025 18:31

There's a really nice Polish one - Piatnica I think - I get it from the Polish grocery shop when I go there for syrups (much nicer than squash) and sausages.

Snozzlemaid · 20/12/2025 18:38

The supermarkets near me all stopped selling LF a few months ago. I was gutted.
Imagine my delight when I discovered M&S were selling it when I visited one of their food halls last week.

No idea as not tried Longley Farm- think Morrisons sell it. I get Lidl full fat plain cottage cheese and it’s good for me. I usually have it in a big dollop on a salad for lunch at work.

southerngirl10 · 20/12/2025 18:40

Wow! Longley Farm staff gatecrashing mumsnet! Come on guys, leave it out!😁

CalzoneOnLegs · 20/12/2025 18:48

@southerngirl10 sadly i don’t work there but I was looking at jobs on the Ilchester cheese factory website recently !

Couldyounot · 19/12/2025 20:04

Well, it used to be the only cheese guaranteed to please, but that was 30 years ago. Everything seems to have gone downhill really

There’s a type of cheese you don’t need a grater
You keep it in a refrigerator….

I can’t read the words cottage cheese without singing it!

I bought some from Waitrose last week

All this thread has done is make me want a cottage cheese and pineapple baguette! 🫣😋

I live within a mile of Longley Farm, it is a proper idyllic farm with lots of nature friendly planting, a wind turbine and beautiful Jersey cows meandering around. Longley Farm all the way for cottage cheese, yoghurts and butter!

It's the only cottage cheese worth buying. I tried supermarket stuff once, it was hideous, lesson learned.

I live quite near Longley Farm itself and you can get their products in all the big supermarkets round here😋[smug]

ThatCyanCat · 20/12/2025 19:08

Why does almost nowhere do it with onions and chives any more? That's the absolute best. The only place I can find it is Lidl. I like Lidl but it should be available everywhere!
