how to fill a stocking if you're single

BeQuirkyMintScroller · 18/12/2025 21:32

I'm single and live alone. My friends all have children and busy costly family lives etc so we stopped doing presents for each other eons ago. No big deal honestly!

One of them suggested getting absolutely hammered, ordering a load of stuff from amazon and putting the boxes straight under the tree for xmas morning. It's a creative solution I admit!!😂 trouble is I don't get memory blanks from being drunk and the boxes wouldnt fit in my lovely new velvet stocking anyway.

I also wondered about transferring someone money and saying "surprise me" so they're not out of pocket but that's asking for time & effort from them, which isnt fair.

It's totally not big deal and isnt what Christmas Day is about of course! I'll take the dog for a lovely walk somewhere new and be grateful to be healthy. But would be nice to unwrap something with my morning coffee this year

If anyone has a solution...pray do tell...

Start a subscription box for yourself, you can get one that is a mystery book and other goodies, or one that is candle melts or even snacks from around the world. You won't know what they are because they're different every month

I read it thanks.

One of my sister's is a single parent, the other has no kids, we do each others stockings...

and are you aware that there are people without sisters? Or family at all for that matter?

NMWchanges · 18/12/2025 21:59

The best bit about the Harrods one is that slowly working through the lotions and potions means it has taken me nearly 12 months to use them all. Each one has been lovely so it’s a gift that keeps on giving.

onpills4godsake · 18/12/2025 22:01

Dh gets me big gifts but it’s always from
mu suggestions so I always do my own stocking when I do everyoneleses

in order a few beauty advent Calendar and then dd and I divvy up the contense into 2 calendars and the rest (as I get 3 of them) gets split between stockings / secret Santa etc

Is it that hard to imagine you dont have sisters? Or they dont live nearby? Or they are in a job that is especially busy this time of year? Or your sister doesnt want to do each other's stocking.

ByRedBee · 18/12/2025 22:20

My kids get upset when they don’t see me with any presents so I do myself a little stocking and they think Santa is amazing for knowing what I like

Hall84 · 18/12/2025 22:24

What about gifting yourself a book subscription - somewhere like Mr B's emporium. You buy the voucher and answer the questions then they send the book?

OneWildNightWithJBJ · 18/12/2025 22:25

Some good ideas here. I didn't know you could buy prefilled stockings, but I have heard of something like Blind Date with a Book, which is basically a surprise book wrapped up.

BeQuirkyMintScroller · 18/12/2025 22:33

some great ideas!

A book subscription from Mr B sounds good (love the term bibliotherapist).

I also had a think about gift shops that I love, and there's just the one very nice/posh garden centre where I walk around the shop saying "love this, love that, love love " - I will ask the sales assistant there if she could spend my money while I have lunch in the restaurant 😜

Id put things under the tree but not in a stocking. Stockings are from FC so I wouldn't fill one for myself.

Sorry to break it to you, but Father Christmas isn't real. I'm pretty sure my stocking presents are from my husband. In fact, some of the things that will be in it I have bought myself earlier in the year and asked him to wrap for my stocking.

Why would you be filing your own stocking. Who does that?

Maybe someone with no family to do their stocking for them??

FirstTimer888 · 18/12/2025 22:41

I’m a single mum of a 3yr old, so a long way off someone buying me surprise presents. This year I’m going my own stocking with real treat items I’d never usually buy myself - the fancier candle, fancier face cream etc.

but the main part of it will be a letter from me to me. My daughter gets a letter from Santa, talking about all the wonderful big and little things she’s done. I also got them. I’ve had a particularly tough year, so I’m going to write a similar letter to me. And then next year I’ll be able to read back on how things have hopefully progressed another year on, and write the next letter for the following year.

I know it’s super soft and mushy, and I’m sure lots will scoff. it might be something that fizzles out after a few years, but right now it feels like the best present I could give to future me - if that makes sense!

@FirstTimer888 love this idea!

Not sure if this is allowed but is there anyway to post an inpost address i would be happy to send you something from Amazon if you give a list of your likes?
I can message you the code to get it once delivered?

You sound lovely but please don’t do this for strangers on the internet.

There are so many scammers this time of year and they prey on people like you.

There are lots of charities that you can donate your lovely gifts or time too.

You are obviously a very kind person and so you want to make sure it’s going to the right people.

Eyeshadow · 18/12/2025 23:04

Not so much something to open but I have seen in Wowcher surprise holidays - would that be something you’re interested in?

Some book stores do surprise books where they’re wrapped up and often a hint about the genre and age range.

StarDolphins · 18/12/2025 23:07

I’m single & it’s just me, my DD & dog. I buy myself lots of gifts for Christmas that I wrap and look forward to opening and looking shocked that Father Christmas knows me so well and has got all my faves!🤣

What about an advent in something you’re interested in? I always buy one for myself.

If you're into beauty there are surprise beauty boxes. I got a glossy box one and it was great, some really nice skin care miniatures in there and some make up and beauty tools. Close your eyes whilst you empty it into your stocking Xmas eve and look at your surprises Xmas morning.

Well yes. But I wasn't aware so many adults put things in a stocking for themselves. If I wanted to buy myself presents I'd just put them under the tree. Im not sure what putting them in a stocking would achieve/add to the day.
But maybe that's just me!

OnLockdown · 18/12/2025 23:36

The sustainable book club also does mystery books, a savoury snack surprise and coffee, tea or hot chocolate.

Tdcp · 18/12/2025 23:36

My friend is a big fan of the "getting hammered and ordering random shite from the internet" thing. She's ended up with some fantastic gifts for herself, including a very big mini fridge that she has no recollection of purchasing, for her craft room 😂 she was very surprised when that one turned up!

Totally valid point honestly, we do donate lots to our local hospital and the wish trees. Honestly I get it, hope you have a lovely Christmas!
OP some of these ideas sound fabulous!

But a lot luggage suitcase or a box of Amazon returns, will be a surprise!!
