I can’t believe I’m asking this!

I asked my partner for some more ideas for stocking fillers for our 8 & 9 year olds. He mentioned new toothbrushes. I said oh actually I was thinking of getting them electric ones so we just change the heads. He said no and that he has stabbed hhimselfin the face by his eye when the head has came off the toothbrush of his electric one. I was bewildered and said how on earth does that even happen?! He’s the processed to say I’m argumentative and if I buy the kids one and they stab themselves in the eye when the head comes off it’s all my fault. In my 36 years of life and using one. That has never happened. Am I right in thinking WTF?!

HIBU for suggesting toothbrushes are Christmas presents, especially when he meant basic ones! What were his other suggestions - a lump of coal, a tangerine, a clip round the ear for pulling a face at them and be grateful there's a roof over your head's?!

Do you trust your DP with cutlery when you sit down for a meal together? He sounds like an accident waiting to happen.

Yamahahaha · 10/12/2025 22:55

He processed?? Was that while stabbing himself in the eye with a toothbrush? I'm getting quite a bizarre mental image here - a bit Tim Burtonesque or Strudelpeter.

AwfullyGood · 10/12/2025 22:57

Keep him aware from knives or sharp objects.

He should be in bubble wrap or something!

Lancasterel · 10/12/2025 22:57

This has made me giggle but equally I can imagine my DH doing something bizarre like this and then irrationally worrying about it forever more. Just divulge him and say you understand but realistically it was a freak accident and not likely to happen again…

Blackbookofsmiles1 · 10/12/2025 22:50

….I think we need a diagram.

How did he manage it?

No idea. When I asked him how it happened he called me an argumentative cunt. 🤷🏻‍♀️

all your comments are making me actually laugh out loud. But behind the scenes I’ve been upset as he’s been abusive about it.

Good for you! 😃 Honestly OP, YANBU and your DP is hilariously over-reacting. Buy the electric toothbrushes - and maybe a pair of safety goggles for each of your DP and DC, you know, just in case ... 😂😂😂

flowerbiithc · 10/12/2025 21:39

Also if you can stab yourself in the eye whilst brushing your teeth. Your doing something wrong!!

Your first three posts have me chuckling away here - what an absolute drama lama 😂😂😂
Seriously you just need to say “I’ve been thinking about the toothbrush saga and you’re right - whilst I can’t imagine any child of mine somehow stabbing themselves in the eye with a toothbrush that’s lost its head, they are 50% your dna so it’s probably best not to risk it”!
😂😂😂

Wow - that's beyond nasty - what a truly terrible thing to say to someone he's supposed to love. I hope he's deeply ashamed of himself and has apologised by now
It seems like you're the only adult in your home OP. 🤗

Abusive people will take any opportunity to be controlling. Hope you're ok OP. Perhaps next year you can give yourselves the gift of a peaceful home without him in it.

And whilst I’ve been chuckling, then I read this and think you should buy him an electric toothbrush for Christmas!!! If he wants an argumentative c&&& then give him one!
He’s an arsehole and being nasty cos he knows how stupid he sounds. I’m sorry he’s upset you but I hope we’ve all given you a giggle ❤️

But for young kids? Its like buying nail clippers

No it’s not! My kids loved getting their first electric toothbrushes!! I wish I’d got one when I was younger - mind you they probably were the size of the old Motorola brick phones ……maybe THAT’S how it happened @flowerbiithc

PennywisePoundFoolish · 10/12/2025 23:11

If he wasn't being horrible and abusive, I'd suggest buying your husband an electric toothbrush and some safety googles.

AngelicKaty · 10/12/2025 23:12

Redpeach · 10/12/2025 23:07

OP's already explained they're "stocking-fillers", not their main presents. And they're nothing like nail clippers - she's setting them up with good dental hygiene habits that will last their entire lives and keep them generally healthier too.
@flowerbiithc It's a brilliant idea OP! 😊

Now the problem becomes clear - and it is all him. How utterly rotten for you to have to spend Christmas with him

P00kyW00ky · 10/12/2025 23:22

Your hubby is an idiot!

Discoprincess6 · 10/12/2025 23:28

Omg this made me giggle!!! Had crap day, thanks!!!

Tryingatleast · 10/12/2025 23:30

Does he mean trying to get the head off the toothbrush and yanking it so it hits you in the eye? (Never done it!)

Copperoliverbear · 10/12/2025 23:38

Oral b on boots have great deals at the moment, mines coming Friday.
ignore him.

Mudflaps · 10/12/2025 23:41

If my husband called me a cunt I'd shove the electric toothbrush (turned on,of course) so far up his arse that it hitting his eye would be the least of his worries. He's a nasty piece of work and it can't be easy living with him so I sincerely hope things improve for you. Get the kids their toothbrushes and let them prove that they have their mothers intelligence.

Idiot11 · 10/12/2025 23:55

Ah I missed that he called you that. Sorry op. Its never acceptable for him to be verbally abusive in that way. Is that 'normal' language between you? Only asking as you've used it upthread or was it the aggression with which it was said? You're not there to be anyone's verbal punch bag and while it's normal to disagree about how to approach parenting decisions, this is a really unhealthy way to navigate that. Is this regular behaviour from him? Are you safe?

MO0N · 10/12/2025 23:55

If my OH accused me of being argumentative he would sharply be told that I am merely standing up for myself and that it is essential to do so when one is married to a 'mr bossy-boots' like him!
