Does anyone have weekends like this anymore?

Friday night, got in, made chilli and nachos, fire on, throws on, pjs on, dh, me, dd (7) and ddog on the sofa watching films
Saturday, Dd did colouring in the morning, had pancakes, then her friend came to play, then she went to theirs for a few hours. I watched xmas films and sewed a top, Dh messed about on his computer.
I made lasagna and Dd came home, we had a dance to Christmas music then watched Home alone and bed.
Today we took ddog out to the woods, dd did clay, we made chocolate Christmas tree biscuits and played with her elves, played in the garden on the trampoline with the elves, had a roast, bath, fire, stories & bed.

Just been looking at Instagram etc and so many posts of visits to cities, girls nights out, santa spectacular shows, Lapland, London visits etc and just feeling a bit 😬
We will do a few Christmas outings for sure, but don’t seem half as busy (or wealthy)as lots of people. I remember lots of weekends as a kid being slow, but I was perfectly happy. We definitely do a lot more with Dd than I did as a kid, but do most of you do these kind of outings most weekends? Is Dd missing out?

Your weekend sounds like the dream weekend to me.

LunaTheCat · 07/12/2025 22:05

Sounds lovely .. you are giving your daughter the best childhood !

dragonballet · 07/12/2025 22:06

SM is not a good benchmark for normal.

Do you do similar? I suppose it’s boring to many

Sounds like a normal weekend. My kids saw friends in houses, we watched Christmas films, walked the dog, did the big shop, homework, played instruments, played some switch, did some drawing, put up the Christmas decorations, had a roast...

Why don’t more do it though? She has school all week, dance mid week one night, plays with friends or playground spring/summer nights, but winter we just take dog out and then in for dinner. Everyone seems to do so much

Why are you looking at instagram if your weekend is so chill, just delete it

Mandarinaduck · 07/12/2025 22:08

Your weekend sounds entirely idyllic.
I never understand the frenzied rushing about to attractions and events, especially with young children.

CandyCaneKisses · 07/12/2025 22:09

People only post the highlights. We were out yesterday but home today.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 07/12/2025 22:10

Yes the majority of our weekend are like this.
Main "event" I took DS6 to was the junior parkrun. Done and dusted in 30 mins :D

Screamingabdabz · 07/12/2025 22:10

Do you always do the cooking?

therewasafishinthepercolator · 07/12/2025 22:10

Sounds like a perfect weekend to me. Kids needs family downtime. Ignore the Instagram making memories stuff. That's ok occasionally if its your thing. Nobody needs that all the time. I don't need it ever. I love chilled weekends.

We are having such chill weekends (as kids sports are on hold) its been lovely and relaxing

BakedAlaskaInMyTummy · 07/12/2025 22:11

Well you’re not wrong of course and it sounds idyllic. However the tone of your post does come across as a touch smug, though I can’t pinpoint why.

shellyleppard · 07/12/2025 22:11

It sounds like a perfect weekend to me. Mum to two teenagers... yesterday eldest (20) was at volunteering work. Youngest (17) out with his friend. Today we decorated the Christmas tree and had a lovely curry for dinner.... they really enjoyed it x i would rather have quality family time every time

TheChosenTwo · 07/12/2025 22:11

Haha it sounds like a lovely week and fairly similar to how mine has gone tbh!
no ‘Christmassy’ activities planned, I have chilled quite a lot and spent some time with the family.
I do have a works do midweek, some nice plans to see people towards the end of the week and a girls night out at the weekend but genuinely all of those things have been organised by other people, I actually bloody love December weekends relaxing at home.
oldest has been working loads so nice to spend some time with her today, we went into town and got some Christmas wrapping paper, stopped at a cosy bar for a beer and slice of pizza. Dh and ds were home watching the snooker then we had a giant roast this evening.

Your weekend sounds lovely, my favourite kind - it’s important to me to get out in the fresh air every day and I’ll try and force ds out for the same but it was absolutely pissing it down incessantly today. He’s been out 6 days this week, one day wasn’t going to hurt so he’s had a proper and deserved lazy one today.

In on Friday night after a busy week for everyone. Jobs around the house on Saturday as well as supermarket shop. Things like writing Christmas cards, cleaning bathroom, baking, washing etc. Gig on Saturday night for everyone (unusual late night but a treat). Got Christmas tree today and decorated it and more house jobs. Plus kids did their homework. This evening we watched a Christmas film together. It's too cold to be venturing out for me!

BennyHenny · 07/12/2025 22:13

We have a mix of weekends like you and weekends which are much busier and “Insta-worthy”. You sound like you’re patting yourself on the back for something which most people do for a good proportion of their weekends though.

It def isn’t supposed to! Not smug when wishing I was at Winter wonderland ice skating or thinking how much dd would love it, but London too dear for us at the moment

My best moment this weekend was predicting when poor DS was going to puke and being ready with the sick bucket, perfect catch and no mess. It happened while we were having my (birthday) dinner.
These are the realities of life not you don't see posts about them ( probably because it's off putting!).
You do see lots of IG posts saying what children really want is your time and for you to play with them, so you're winning 😉

I think your weekend sounds perfect and you all seem happy with it which is what counts. Give yourself a pat on the back!

We do. Today we had football this morning, then home, I did some bits of cooking and laundry and child did her painting. Walked the dog this afternoon, made dinner, child went to bed.

Saturday is either just the dog walk in the afternoon, or town for shopping, or more rarely a trip to the city farm or the museum.
