AIBU in thinking that King Charles' passing will devastate Britain?

If you remember back when Queen Elizabeth II died, how upset most British people were and how it caused some social insecurity as many British people saw her as a sense of strength and a rock due to her continuity and longevity, but with her gone, they weren't sure how Britain would fare. Hence, the large crowds of mourners and a lot of upset.

King Charles III - though not as admired as Queen Elizabeth was - also has longevity and a sense of continuity in a different way: not as monarch since he's only been in the role for three years, but as a royal figure, i.e. he has been in the spotlight since the 1940s and conducting royal duties since the 1960s. When he dies, will Britain finally feel as though the older generation of royals - who for so long have provided reassurance and comfort to the British people - have gone?

Will this lead to a lot of soul-searching about where next Britain must go and perhaps cause social tensions due to the insecurity of identity? Who will the British look to to guide the nation from then on? Who will be their new rock?

There should be a massive magnifying glass on them.

How the hell did Charles become a billionaire for a start. How much of that is his privately? Where did he get that private income? I thought he worked for the public.

As someone mentioned upthread, the figure for their tax avoidance is one that should be calculated and disclosed.

Aren’t they the biggest land owners in England

them and Church of England

I don’t mind monarchy but that land handed down historically should be given back to the public and why on earth if he’s a billionaire isn’t he giving that money to the public or charities - why are they hoarding it

Well... he is building 24 homes in Cornwall on Duchy land specifically for homeless people. We heard about this nearly two years ago, they are still being built. The idea is to roll this out elsewhere but I'm afraid the Royals are always going to roll out ideas and then we hear nothing.

Only 24?? The mind boggles

that land should come back to the public

CatPawsAreCute · 12/12/2025 13:51

And this is from July 2025.

The first phase comprises high quality temporary accommodation for 16 individuals, with two four-bedroomed homes and eight one-bedroomed apartments. Completion is anticipated by Spring 2026.

I dunno, I dared mention on the Royal board section that Kate wore 12k earrings at her concert and it was a bit out of touch to those they preach to about homelessness etc. Did I get shot down in a blaze of glory.

I spent half the day justifying myself, that I wasn't a Sussex Squad member, I didn't just hate Kate for no reason, while the point of my post was ignored.

I have much more respect for Meghan than I do any of the other members of the Royal family and think the double standards for both of them is incredible.

Case in point here. Now don't get me wrong, with endless financial resources and staff on hand I don't think either of them has quite the same stresses in motherhood as the average mum but when Meghan uses a nanny and complains of being overwhelmedas a mum apparently her claims are laughable

Whereas when Kate talks about the exact same issue of being overwhelmed as a mum, she's praised for it

Meghan in ways ensured Kate was sainted.

I'm no fan of H&M but Meghan definitely comes out the worst when her and Kate are pitted against each other.

24 houses , wow that should do it, Where I live we have around 11k on the council house waiting list, the boarded up shops in the city centre are now tent cities and it is the same in many other cities

jumpingthehighjump · 12/12/2025 17:21

There's 24,000 on the housing waiting list in Cornwall. The trouble is it's the second home/Airbnb with people buying them up. And unemployment is a huge problem too

Not sure 24 houses will cut it!

If only there was a way to create conditions in leases, eh ? If only,

Wingingit73 · 12/12/2025 18:03

Queen Elizabeth was only monarch for 2-3 generations. All we'd knowm..Charles. No.

sorry, I misread! I thought you meant Meghan looks like the worse or the two.

Mothership4two · 13/12/2025 04:59

I don't know anything about those 24 homes, but I bet that they won't be a freebie but will be leased to the Cornish homeless charity. Same as happens with hospitals, Armed Forces land and other public buildings.

IndigoIsMyFavouriteColour · 13/12/2025 05:04

No-one will care.

They will end up in the hands of Airb'n'b "entrepreneurs". Who will offer over (what will an an already high) market value and then fleece them out to make more squillions.

Proving - if anyone was unaware - that you need money[1] to make money.

[1]Preferably someone elses. Which brings us back to the royals.

I really don't think they will. They'll have clauses in the deeds, and the leases.

I'm no fan of William, but he's not completely stupid.

Mothership4two · 13/12/2025 10:06

I think as it's Duchy land they can't be sold off
