Waiting to hear from interview - feeling deflated!

galaxybeyond101 · 29/11/2025 09:59

I had a job interview on Wednesday that I felt went really well, I left feeling super positive. They had more people to interview on Thursday and I was told I would hear back by the end of the week or early next week.

I didn’t hear anything yesterday (Friday) and I feel so deflated and I have convinced myself I haven’t got the job. It was my meal ticket out of a very toxic environment and my hope is dwindling.

has anyone heard back later than they were told and still got positive news? Or am I over thinking this? I just really felt like they’d of let me know Friday if I was successful.

Feeling very down and trying not to let it ruin my weekend

In my history of recruiting/job seeking, no-one has EVER got back when they said they would… Usually down to the final decision maker being otherwise disposed..

I hope it wasn't for the Civil Service. They're never that quick.

Alexasashes · 29/11/2025 10:39

In my recent honest experience, I interviewed on a Wednesday and was told late Friday afternoon I had been successful.

I was then accidentally cc'd into the email on Monday morning to the other candidate/s to tell them they hadn't been successful.

I do think they like to give that good news rather than bad on a Friday but of course the decision could just be delayed.

Good luck.

nutbrownhare15 · 29/11/2025 10:42

Start looking for other roles. This will help you pass the time but also I think the universe has a way of making it more likely that you'll get it if your focus has moved on.

galaxybeyond101 · 29/11/2025 10:45

I am just holding onto the fact they also said early next week but I think I just need to move on, it’s just hard as I really felt I had it in the bag!

The business has probably had something unexpected come up which was more pressing. Look at other jobs you can apply for in the meantime. If you don’t get it, everything happens for a reason and something more suitable will arise for you

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 29/11/2025 10:49

You’re overthinking. You were told that the reply will be either Friday or early next week. There are a million reasons why the outcome hasn’t been shared yet. And they’re all within the timeframe you’ve been given!

JFDIYOLO · 29/11/2025 11:03

Stop it.

You will make many more applications than you get interviews, and have way more interviews than offers.

The market is challenging right now - if you're on LinkedIn you'll see how challenging.

You've stalled - which isn't helpful. Stop even thinking about it and let it go. If they want you, you'll hear very soon. If they don't, they may send a belated no thanks - or quite likely you'll never hear.

Always be looking forward, stepping forward. Next application, networking conversation.

You may get a tap on the shoulder when you aren't looking.

Incidentally if you're not on LI, or seldom use it, channel that energy and time this weekend into polishing your profile and CV up.

Newgirls · 29/11/2025 11:06

a decision maker could be off on a Friday. Dont worry yet

Thepeopleversuswork · 29/11/2025 11:07

I don’t think you should read too much into this. Theres any number of reasons why this could take a while.

Starship74 · 29/11/2025 11:07

If the last interviews were Thursday, hearing by Friday is very optimistic. They’ll need internal discussions then let HR know then they will call which I’d expect to be Tuesday at the earliest.

JudgeBread · 29/11/2025 11:13

Oh it's rubbish isn't it? The waiting and hoping! I had similar not long ago - was stuck in a really toxic work environment and interviewed for something much better, felt like I absolutely nailed the interview but hadn't heard anything by Friday evening and spent the whole weekend feeling really down and deflated.

First thing Monday morning they called, apologised for the delay and offered me the job. So I'd say don't give up hope until you know for sure (which will be Monday!) but also motivate yourself by jumping back in and looking at other job listings - it'll keep your mind off it and stop you spoiling your weekend by feeling down, and will be beneficial if it is a no because you've already got a head start on your next go.

Job hunting is horrible at the moment so as hard as it is you have to try and just keep at it. Fingers and toes crossed for you though 🤞

I've never known the recruitment process be as quick as hoped, from either side of it, and I have learned never to believe it if I'm told, "we'll let you know by the end of the week." I've been interviewing candidates recently, and I say to them, "we will let you know as soon as we can, but any decisions have to go through HR and so on, so I can't tell you how quickly it will happen."

I might know someone is the strongest candidate as they leave, as we use a scorecard system and use the same questions for every candidate for a role, but all I can do is recommend to HR and more senior management that I think they're the one we should hire.

Thanks all, some really reassuring replies on this thread. It’s just a horrible feeling being in limbo, especially when you want it so badly! I wish they wouldn’t let candidates go into the weekend not knowing, it’s all I can think about!!

Do you think it’s reasonable to email Monday afternoon if I haven’t heard anything?

OP posts:
loveawineloveacrisp · 29/11/2025 11:59

When I got my current job they came back to me over a week later than they said they would. I thought I hadn't got it.

DarkForces · 29/11/2025 12:02

They've given you a timescale they're still within. As a recruiter candidates who chase before the deadline I tell them put me off. It implies they'd be hard to manage as they don't listen.

My husband was on an interview panel on a Friday and they interviewed all day, at 4pm they had made their decision on who had got the job. Husband said to HR lady she could phone the candidate and tell her she got the job and she said it was late and she was going home and she would do it on Monday. My husband was annoyed at that. Hopefully you will get good news next week

ToKittyornottoKitty · 29/11/2025 12:04

They haven’t gotten back to you later than you have been told though, nothing is wrong here OP. Sometimes people are just busy on a Friday! Good luck for next week OP. Personally I’d wait until Tuesday morning to email

Wreckinball · 29/11/2025 12:08

No don’t contact them it’ll make you look pushy, there’s no positive for the future employer there with you contacting them

Hoodlumboodlum · 29/11/2025 12:08

Having been on the other side of the table many times, I would just forget about it for now and contact them midweek next week if you haven't heard anything back (definitely not on Monday or Tuesday).

The rest of their roles won't have stopped because they've been interviewing - the panel may not have had time to meet to deliberate yet and may have scheduled that meeting for Monday or Tuesday.

It's easy to assume they'll have told the successful candidate on Friday and will tell unsuccessful on Monday but it's usually not that simple.

However, I've been on your side of things many times too and it sucks waiting.

Don't contact them on Tuesday morning. They said early next week. I interviewed on Wednesday and due to sickness from the panel since we haven't met to finalise our decision. Luckily we gave ourselves a week's grace. Anyone who chases before this will be getting short shrift.

OP wants to contact them Monday afternoon so I was giving a more realistic time scale. I don’t think a polite follow up on the Tuesday would do any harm though.
