Hate showering & washing my hair-Do you shower every day?

Don’t know why I hate i?! Does anyone else?

I shower on working days (3 x per week) and if meeting up with friends etc, but if i’m off for a while, I don’t, is that gross? I could easily go a week if only doing school drop off and food shop, dog walks

in fairness, it's irrelevant if your hair is greasy or dry in term of smell. It can look clean but still smell unpleasant.

If you work in a restaurant kitchen, fast food place, pig farm or fish packing factory maybe. Otherwise no. It’s excess oil that makes hair smell. And washing your hair all the time stimulates excess oil production.

If I washed my hair once a week I'd look like I had been for a swim in a chip pan. And no, it won't eventually train itself.

That's fine, my husband is the same, but the OP doesn't have this issue.

Eh? My hair would look and smell awful if I only washed it once a week. Where did this ‘once a week’ rule come from?

That's fine, my husband is the same, but the OP doesn't have this issue or she would be washing it every day.

It's not a rule but some types of hair only need to be washed once a week. I used to wash my every day, but now do it once a week and it is fine.

You're not alone. I hate showering especially and would happily never do it again if science could figure out a way to get clean without it. As I've got older, I have started to wonder if I am ND (I'm of an age where such things weren't considered) and I wonder if this is one of them.

I think it's called having a bath, which I do every night to help me sleep well.

Edited

I still don't agree, clean looking hair don't mean no unpleasant smell. Unfortunately.

FurForksSake · 13/11/2025 11:52

Ahhhh no, I do not shower every day. I shower like twice a week and have the odd wash in between. I find it incredibly hard to get myself to go in. Doesn’t help that standing is very painful, drying is hard and showering often takes a lot of energy.

im probably gross, probably lots of things.

honestly, I think a lot of people don’t wash / shower as much as people on here think is acceptable, they just don’t mention it.

SinisterBumFacedCat · 13/11/2025 11:55

Shower twice a day. I would feel weird if I didn’t shower first thing in the morning and I love a shower before bed. But I only wash my hair 2/3 times a week, mainly because it takes so long to dry.

Bogfrog · 12/11/2025 16:10

Bath twice a day, wash hair every other day. Can’t imagine not cleaning myself every day

Same here!

There are some truly nasty, judgmental people here in MN.

Ignore horrible posters like this, OP, and the ones trying to diagnose you as neurodiverse or mentally ill. You know what suits you and your routine best. Do what works for you.

The girl that does my eyebrows and eyelashes only washes her hair every other week.. can confirm I am in close proximity to her often and there is no smell.

QuiltPlantCandle · 12/11/2025 16:07

Doesn't the armpit and waist-down washing take just as long as a quick shower?

No, I tend to do them at different times at snatched moments. The waist down washing is often before bed when I just don’t want to to go the effort and coldness of getting fully wet and then having to dry my whole body. It’s very quick and very targeted!

Toutafait · 13/11/2025 13:28

If you start washing your hair less often, it gets used to it and doesn't need to be washed so often.

Toutafait · 13/11/2025 13:31

The main role of Mumsnet seems to be to police conformity. So many threads are about checking whether you're doing the same as everyone else. As if, at this precise moment in time, the majority (in the UK) have got everything right. As the world burns around us.

Sartre · 13/11/2025 13:32

Why don’t you shower and not wash your hair? I wash my hair maybe every 3 days but still shower daily.

itsthetea · 13/11/2025 13:37

Oh there is data - around 65% of the Uk population shower every day

mumzof4x · 13/11/2025 13:40

Love my shower ! Take coffee with me in the morning and it’s a great way to wake up. Use refreshing scented shower gels that tend to invigorate and always wash hair it’s really long and thick …. Can’t stand the smell of not it kinda picks up all the cooking smells ! I let it dry while working
Night time is hair up and quick shower with a different shower gel something more relaxing and a good lathering of body lotion.
I love snuggling up naked with dh in bed at night so would be too self conscious if I didn’t smell good.
That doesn’t mean it’s not okay for anyone to not shower though it’s personal choice. I just like it and it relaxes me big time .

MightyGoldBear · 13/11/2025 14:32

I'm likely audhd. It takes up a lot of energy and brain space to shower and wash my hair. I do feel better afterwards but crikey I dont know how I did all the washing and hair drying I did before children. Everyday or every other 😴

These days it's wash hair once a week maybe twice at a push. Shower every other day or just basin wash If I'm really struggling. I am not a sweaty person so I really don't smell but I do feel better for washing.

I'm hoping when my children are older I might have more energy for routines like this.

evilharpy · 13/11/2025 16:12

Toutafait · 13/11/2025 13:28

If you start washing your hair less often, it gets used to it and doesn't need to be washed so often.

Absolutely not true. Some people just have greasy hair. I've tried many times over the years to drag it out and get it to adjust, but it makes no difference whatsoever.

IcedPurple · 13/11/2025 16:19

I shower every day. Sometimes twice in summer. But it's more for the 'feeling' of being refreshed and clean. Unless you're working out or doing other 'activities' that might make you sweaty, I don't think you actually 'need' to shower every day in the British winter.

IcedPurple · 13/11/2025 16:20

Toutafait · 13/11/2025 13:28

If you start washing your hair less often, it gets used to it and doesn't need to be washed so often.

Your hair is dead. It can't really get 'used' to anything.

TheLongNow · 13/11/2025 16:23

When required. My hair is of a kind that definitely is better for infrequent washing so gets done twice a week. I have a thorough daily flannel wash and shower a few times per week. A deep hot bath at least once per week.

Spidey66 · 13/11/2025 16:26

Shower every day, hair wash every other day. It’s very rare I don’t…if I do miss a day I feel smelly.

HorrorAndHaagenDazs · 13/11/2025 16:34

I shower and wash my hair every day, but, i enjoy showering so its not a hardship.
I find it relaxing and like to get it as hot as i can bear with some "naice" shower gel etc etc.

Fidgety31 · 13/11/2025 16:37

I can’t stand the look and smell of
people who don’t clean themselves or their hair … the smell of unwashed hair is grim.
No reason nowadays not to bath or shower everyday … just laziness .
