She's dying isn't she?

Mum discharged herself from hospital today.

Hiatus hernia. She can't eat or drink anything. Literally throws it straight back up.

Can't walk because her lower back is buggered.

UTI in blood. Been given antibiotics but nothing seems to be giving her a boost.

Sat in a sodding chair for 36 hours at A&E. Not slept for at least 48. Said she just wanted to go home.

I'm really scared 😭

MNHQ EDIT to gently suggest that MNers new to this thread take the time to read through all of the OP's posts before answering

If it is vancomycin, just be aware of any tummy upsets. When both my toddler and my uncle were on it for a prolonged period, both times they ended up with c-diff, which is pretty nasty. Just to be aware.

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 14/11/2025 00:04

Has she got an IV up @McSteamyorMcdreamy?

That'll keep her hydrated at least.

McSteamyorMcdreamy · 14/11/2025 12:23

They gave her fluids 2 days ago. Nothing since, but her elecs on her bloods are ok.

She now has an infection in her arm from her cannula 🙄

Oh shecis really going through it isnt she ?
@McSteamyorMcdreamy
How is she feeling in herself? Is she totally wiped out?

Lifealwaysgetsbetter · 14/11/2025 16:26

If she’s eaten nothing in a week and not had fluids for two days she would be almost dead. And her blood work would show issues with her kidneys. Are you sure she’s not drinking and eating something when you’re not there - you mentioned gravy ? If not you need to ask to see someone senior now!

Uricon2 · 14/11/2025 17:26

I'd make a list of questions (take your time, it's so easy to forget stuff with all the stress) and ask for a call back from the doctor managing her treatment. It's no good hoping they will be around when you visit but you have more chance this way if you're persistent.

She is drinking - not anywhere near as much as she should but she is drinking.

That'll be why they're not too worried about her. And presumably she's stopped vomiting.
Also, her blood tests will show that she isn't particularly dehydrated.

Just had a call from my sister. The ate a whole cauliflower floret with cheese sauce. 1 potato croquet and a few green beans and she's just had a cream cracker with butter and a couple of slices if thinly cut cheese. All stayed down, no reflux or gagging. HUGE result!! 😁

That’s great news!! Onwards and upwards! X

Oh I'm so glad to see that update. You must be so relieved.

It's a standing joke in my family that if I am ever in hospital then I don't get fed. I've done a few days on a drip but NBM.

MrsLizzieDarcy · 15/11/2025 09:52

I hope it's the start of a positive change, OP. Your poor Mum she must feel dreadful with all that infection raging in her.

anyolddinosaur · 15/11/2025 12:26

Great - but you still want that investigation done on Monday. So I'd be asking the nurse where the nil by mouth (or no solid food if they have that) signs are and will they please ensure that it is on her bed at the appropriate time on Monday.

McSteamyorMcdreamy · 15/11/2025 16:54

Today: Despite the good eating last night she's been very sick vomiting throughout the night and this morning. She did a bit of lunch which has stayed down but wasn't particularly nice!

She had bloods done yesterday and the one part of the liver function tests that was out of range has reduced from 700 to 400 overnight (the right way) so that is good and her WBC count has also reduced although not significantly. Her inflammation markers are still ridiculously high though and delirium is still quite high.

She's still having her abdominal scan on Monday and is also going to ENT on Monday to see what's going on there.

NewAgeNewMe · 15/11/2025 17:40

Oh bless her, she’s really going through it. Hopefully you get some answers soon.

Lifealwaysgetsbetter · 15/11/2025 18:45

That’s good she’s getting better. Antibiotics threw my liver function off too but it sounds like it’s all going in the right direction. What are her Crp levels now?

Nessiesfoodprovider · 15/11/2025 19:01

This is possibly going to sound ridiculous but are they looking for possible gallstones blocking her bile duct? Those symptoms sound awfy like when I had them, and all my bloods except liver were normal range. Liver was in raging alcoholic near-collapse range! If everything else is settling and responding, it could be something like that.
I hope your mum continues to recover and starts to get some strength back.

Still on the wrong side of rather high. She also has very low potassium but she's point blank refusing to take the potassium tablets even though they are soluble ones.

I won't lie. I lost my temper with her tonight. I walked out though and went for a walk.

Due to the delirium she's talking to some of the nurses like they are a piece of shit. That's not my mum at all. To be fair to her when she is lucid she is saying sorry, but trying to explain to her that they are only doing what they are doing to make her better is like talking to a brick wall at the moment.

Thanks for updating us @McSteamyorMcdreamy , we are all praying for a speedy recovery x

McSteamyorMcdreamy · 17/11/2025 18:53

Not good news today. Ultrasound shows shadow over the liver.

Further scans tomorrow but we've been told to prepare for the worst.

Heartbroken 💔
