What's with using wine glasses for gender reveal cakes

CadburysIsntChocolate · 01/11/2025 15:43

Happy to be told IABU but my god those wine glass gender reveal cakes give me the ick. Why not just cut the cake with a knife? Am I the only one who finds this trend weird?

The wine glasses are weird, but so are the cakes and the gender reveals - just one small drop of weirdness in an ocean of weirdness!

GeorgeClooneyshouldhavemarriedme · 01/11/2025 15:46

All gender reveals on Social Media give me the ick.

mindutopia · 01/11/2025 15:47

Because someone did it first on TikTok. That’s the reason. 🤷🏻‍♀️

GaspingGekko · 01/11/2025 15:57

I presume it's because if you cut with a knife you see the colour when you go to make the second cut - so the cutter sees before everyone else.
With a wine glass you can hold it up and everyone sees at once.
Makes sense, still a bunch of self obsessed weirdness.

Blanketfull · 01/11/2025 15:58

The whole thing is very weird indeed to my mind.

Ilovepastafortea · 01/11/2025 15:58

I find the whole gender reveal thing a bit cringy TBH

NinePoppadomsAndASaagAloo · 01/11/2025 16:00

I don’t know about anyone else here, and maybe I’m just old and boring, but when I found out I was expecting a girl I just… told people I was expecting a girl. With my words.

Yup, that’s the way to do it 🤷🏼‍♀️

Gender reveal parties are yet another example of ridiculous and unnecessary events that are promoted by social media.

I also worry that the wine glass is going to break when they push it down and they’ll lacerate themselves 🫣

I'm even more old and boring. With my first two pregnancies I didn't find out.

Fairyliz · 01/11/2025 16:06

Another useless waste of money.
I expect this time next year they will be whining that they have no money and pleading poverty.

Didimum · 01/11/2025 16:07

Probably because you’d see the colour on the knife as soon as you lifted it after the first cut, which spoils the aesthetic of the cake reveal. With a clear glass, you get the cake cross section straight away. Wine glasses are easy as they are tall and easy to hold upside down.

I think this is quite obvious.

No, I didn’t have a gender reveal or a baby shower.

Catpiece · 01/11/2025 16:10

Yet another instagrammable me me me moment. Jeez, is nothing private anymore. Cringing

Gowlett · 01/11/2025 16:10

Yeah, I think it’s stupid. Like much Insta / TikTok content…

anotherfinemess1 · 01/11/2025 16:14

I think it’s an awful trend because it makes the celebration of the pregnancy all about the gender. That’s not important! The only thing which matters is the health of the baby- and its personality and talents, which are nothing to do with its gender. I remember years ago a pregnant teacher colleague doing a gender reveal in front of the whole school. She was whooping away about having a girl, and I really felt sorry for the boys sitting there.
Grr. I’m not usually this grumpy!

My husband and I had a cake for a gender reveal but it was just for the two of us - we wanted to find out the gender without others around. We knew the NHS sonographers weren’t allowed to write the gender down for us to look at later, so we had a private scan and took the envelope with the gender in to a baker we use regularly.

We could have just opened the envelope but we like cake 🤷🏻‍♀️ no-one else was involved though!

We each had a knife and cut into the cake at the same time to make 1 slice, but I accidentally pulled my knife out first and saw the colour.

Boomer55 · 01/11/2025 16:37

Gender reveal gatherings are the most stupid and pretentious things anyway. 🙄

OSTMusTisNT · 01/11/2025 16:41

The whole gender reveal thing is ridiculous. Apart from Mum, Dad and probably 2 Grannies, no one cares what you're having 🙄.

MellowPinkDeer · 01/11/2025 16:50

The whole American thing of gender reveals is ridiculous and the wine glasses even more so.

mathanxiety · 01/11/2025 16:52

"Gender" reveals are the epitome of tacky, imo.

The tall flute-style glasses I've seen used are probably engraved wedding tat.

Wouldn't it be funny if the bakery got orders mixed up...

My DSis was excited and my DF. But they were really just excited about the baby, whatever sex it was!
In fact my DM wanted a boy so was disappointed. My DF didn’t care.

Gorbie · 01/11/2025 17:35

It's all got a ridiculous now. I'm probably seen as totally boring but ive 3 children and never found out the gender of any of them, never had baby shower either

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 01/11/2025 17:59

I do find the glass into cake the weirdest of the social media trends.

The closest we got to a ‘gender reveal’ was in Covid for DD2. One of the many online quizzes we did with our extended families and we made the last question “Is DD1 going to have a baby brother or sister?”. Nothing on social media and we just thought it would be a fun way to tell our parents and siblings.

We just told people with DD1 and showed a picture of a little brother babygrow for DS.

Huntrix · 01/11/2025 18:04

Yes gender reveals give me the ick too. It's almost as if these people have babies just for the SM pictures and videos. Luckily I don't use SM anymore so I rarely see it.

My ex SIL had a gender reveal where she filmed her then 6yo daughter scratching a scratch card that revealed that she was getting a baby sister. She was so disappointed and just started crying. The video was never posted. 😂

Northbynorthbest · 01/11/2025 18:15

Just the latest American nonsense to make its way here.

Arlanymor · 01/11/2025 18:18

Just another performative gesture that none of us needed. Se also baby showers.
