When did Halloween get like this?

When I was younger Halloween was just about a school disco, and then when I was at uni it was a night out clubbing in fancy dress (or a flat party). It was never a huge thing.

Tonight while walking home from work there was masses of teens shouting abuse at everyone, smashing bottles and just being shits. More teens on the bus shouting abuse at everyone who wasn’t dressed up. I got called a miserable fat cunt because I wasn’t in a costume.

When did this happen? When did society get like this? I only left uni five years ago and it feels like it’s changed massively since then

I’m really sorry someone said that to you. You are not a miserable fat cunt.

PopsiMox · 31/10/2025 19:16

You must live in an awful area.

All I've seen is children in costumes walking with families and dressed up dogs! And some older teens wlaking round. Some with younger siblings.

All beautifully behaved.

Oh no, I am, but I take pride in it 🤣 I hate this time of year

Maybe it’s not society so much as where you live. We had a few cute kids knock on our door and someone at work brought in themed muffins.

Bikergran · 31/10/2025 19:17

Where on earth are you? My 30something daughter is at a costume party at a friend's house, and I'm handing out sweeties to random groups of kids. Was out in town an hour or two ago and no drunkenness or aggression!!!

Smartiepants79 · 31/10/2025 19:17

Well it’s nothing like that here.
Some small groups of kids and parents and small groups of reasonably well behaved teens round and about. No abuse and no bottle smashing.

EchoedSilence · 31/10/2025 19:18

How strange. I've never experienced any thing like that and I live in a not quite up to MN standards area.

Overthebow · 31/10/2025 19:18

It’s nothing like that round here. Round here it’s school and community halloween discos, trick or treating where loads of houses make an effort and kids are out having fun, no issues and everyone is just having fun.

SoEasyToFall · 31/10/2025 19:19

I live in a quite deprived seaside town. One of the most deprived areas outside London. So perhaps it’s that. But it was never like this when I was a child.

Not like that here. Just families with kids politely adhering to the village rules (only knock at decorated houses). All remembering to say thank you.

Garamousalata · 31/10/2025 19:19

I absolutely hate Halloween and everything it stands for.

Crushed23 · 31/10/2025 19:20

I live in the US and Halloween starts in late August.

Personally I love it, breaks up autumn/winter and makes October a more interesting month.

It’s never really been something I took part in but I don’t remember it being this bad

Sounds like a rough area. I grew up in one. Its shit.
Where i live now its been lovely. Little kids all dressed up, accompanied by parents, only taking one sweet each.

Sorry you encountered a bunch of twats

mamagogo1 · 31/10/2025 19:22

It’s not like that here, little kids trick or treat then families are heading to the many pubs all holding family friendly parties

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 31/10/2025 19:22

My estate has been cute kids and families dressed up, but the wider city has had issues with kids advertising a "party" on social media and then hundreds of unruly teens descending on poor unsuspecting residents and causing chaos when they find there is no party. It's happened 3 times this week already. Police have had to attend and disperse them each time and some people have been hurt.

Newsenmum · 31/10/2025 19:23

I think youre unlucky as round here it’s
absolutely lovely. Some houses decorated and little kids dressed up. You only go to the decorated houses and no teens being idiots.
It’s one day a year and seems really joyful and exciting! I much prefer it to new year’s eve which is what youve just dedcribed.

Miserable1 · 31/10/2025 19:23

In fairness I've never seen anything like this in my life. I'm not a fan of Halloween at all but took my 6 year old trick or treating (decorated houses only). It was lovely, so many houses decorated and lots of happy children.

Jaywick?

Thinkonmadam · 31/10/2025 19:24

I think today is a bit of a perfect storm in that it’s half term and a Friday. No excuse for bad behaviour but it hits different when it’s not a school night

Wait what do you mean? Constant trick or treating or events and decorations from late august?

piglet879 · 31/10/2025 19:25

Oh, it's great here! I live in a normal town, quite near the shops and so on and we decorate our house like mad! We get lots of trick or treaters but all polite and no issues and my kids get ridiculous amounts of sweets when we go out.

ShodAndShadySenators · 31/10/2025 19:25

Don't get that sort of thing round here, there have been teens at my door but they've all been unfailingly polite. But people behaving like arses isn't new, you're always going to get that!

phoenixrosehere · 31/10/2025 19:26

Agree with other posters.

It is definitely not like that in our area either nor has it ever been the almost 8 years we’ve been here and the area has grown tremendously in those years.

We were out for an hour and didn’t have any of that nor was it loud.

Lindy2 · 31/10/2025 19:27

My village is full of well behaved, dressed up kids having lots of fun trick or treating.

Quite a few houses have really impressive Halloween displays. It's actually a very nice, fun, community event around here.

I'm so you encountered such nasty behaviour.
