When did Halloween get like this?

SoEasyToFall · 31/10/2025 19:14

When I was younger Halloween was just about a school disco, and then when I was at uni it was a night out clubbing in fancy dress (or a flat party). It was never a huge thing.

Tonight while walking home from work there was masses of teens shouting abuse at everyone, smashing bottles and just being shits. More teens on the bus shouting abuse at everyone who wasn’t dressed up. I got called a miserable fat cunt because I wasn’t in a costume.

When did this happen? When did society get like this? I only left uni five years ago and it feels like it’s changed massively since then

i just went out with ddog,
some of the houses were amazing, planks of wood on the front door
red paint
eerie music
when my dd were small we just carved a pumpkin and provided sweets

money spinner

It doesn't seem to be popular at all where I am, I've got a two fecking tubs of sweets and we've had not a soul.

Although I'll take no trick or treating at all over teenagers being yobs I suppose. You don't live in Rhyl do you? Pal of mine lives there and last Halloween some little shits caught her cat and painted it red. Poor thing had to be shaved and had chemical burns.

Upstartled · 31/10/2025 19:29

Sorry that happened to you, op.

We have a whole area out and about Halloweening tonight and it's just very busy and good natured with kids dressed up and enjoying the evening with their trailing parents and older siblings. Much like when I was doing this forty years ago. But if you are lumbered with feral kids they're not going to be any better on Halloween.

SoEasyToFall · 31/10/2025 19:29

Thankfully it’s quiet up my way. I hate this time of year

Have had lots of trick or treaters and they have all been lovely and polite.

Wherethough · 31/10/2025 19:34

I don't think this is representative of society.

I live in the US and Halloween starts in late August.

Personally I love it, breaks up autumn/winter and makes October a more interesting month.

Agree. There’s not much between the end of summer and Christmas other than Halloween and Guy Fawkes so I look forward to Halloween. Took my middle and youngest out and both enjoyed it. Middle was very excited and cheerful. Glad to see kids happy!

Uricon2 · 31/10/2025 19:42

I love Halloween, have done since I was little well over half a century ago. I'm not well so not doing anything official this year but was delighted to see a miniscule witch and tiny pumpkin who made it up the pitch black drive with their apologetic Mum (perhaps I'm encouraging a Haunted House feel...)

I'm very sorry for people who don't have a good experience but those who are going to do dreadful things won't wait for one night a year. It is lovely here and IMO, kids dressing up and being delighted by being given a couple of sweets is a good counterpoint to the greedfest that Christmas can become.

Rowgtfc72 · 31/10/2025 19:47

OP, I'd put money on you living in Grimsby or Cleethorpes 😁

Lollipop81 · 31/10/2025 19:52

I live in Birmingham and all we have is lots of children in costumes trick or treating knocking houses only that are decorated. It’s lovely seeing lots of other people we know out and about trick or treating.
There are lots of parties on too and it’s generally a really good atmosphere. I can’t say I’ve been called a fat miserable cunt, to my knowledge anyway 🤣🤣 I mean what the hell your just minding your own business. Maybe you were just unlucky.

JLou08 · 31/10/2025 19:56

I don't think this is a typical experience. I've just seen children having a nice time and being polite and respectful.

usedtobeaylis · 31/10/2025 19:57

That's awful - and I hope you haven't taken that comment to heart, little shits indeed - but Halloween isn't the problem there.

lifeonmars100 · 31/10/2025 19:58

I live in a deprived area but we don't get kids behaving like that, all the little ones dress up and come out with an adult or an older sibling and look very sweet. People round here may not be well off but the children are generally really cared for.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 31/10/2025 19:59

That sounds awful OP!

I live in a not particularly well off part of outer London and it’s all civilised here. There are a lot of kids out trick or treating, and the particular area where I live is very popular, but it’s all in good spirits.

We ran out of sweets (I thought I’d bought loads!!) so took the decorations down at that point to signal that we were no longer taking part, and didn’t get any knocks after that.

NessShaness · 31/10/2025 20:00

Im really sorry you encountered such arseholes tonight OP.

It’s been really lovely here. Our street really goes to town with decorations and big inflatable haunted houses, all the adults dress up to open the door and it’s been really lovely to see all the kids dressed up. Every single one who came to my door was so polite and wished me a happy Halloween. It’s really cheered me up after a shitty week.

tothelefttotheleft · 31/10/2025 20:01

It all seems very grabby to me.

Same, I live in a fairly notorious area in my city and the kids are always impeccable at Halloween - I've loved having the big teenagers coming round for sweets, some dressed as bananas or ghostface and some not even wearing a costume but I'm happy to see them out. I would feel pretty scunnered like the OP if I witnessed what she did.

LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway · 31/10/2025 20:02

@SoEasyToFall I am sorry you got called a nasty name, but I don't recognise this behaviour at all. The kids in my area who came trick or treating this evening - mostly aged from 3 to 17, were very well behaved .. And there were around 100 of them! This is not typical behaviour at all (from children/teenagers) IME.

I do live in a nice/middle class area, but even when I lived in a more 'working class' area the kids were mostly OK.

Not like that where I live either, I’m afraid YABU.

Where the fuck do you live?! 😦

Helpwithdivorce · 31/10/2025 20:04

Nothing like you describe where I live. Lots of children out with their parents and a few teens. All impeccably polite. Everyone having a lovely evening and some really wonderfully decorated houses

SwirlyShirly · 31/10/2025 20:05

It’s not like that here. Lots of cute kiddos having a great time, someone setting off silent fireworks, some great creative and funny costumes and houses decorated really nicely. It’s encouraged me to up my game a bit for next year 😁

Kisshygge · 31/10/2025 20:05

I suppose it depends where you live. We're in NI. We've had multiple groups of teenagers knocking on our door this evening and they've all dressed up and were very polite and pleasant to our children when they answered the door.

Kirbert2 · 31/10/2025 20:05

I live in a rough area and it wasn't like that at all tonight. Even older ones who were out were all dressed up and behaving.

Lots of fireworks going off though.
