Does anyone else remember the first time they saw Madonna?

I was just thinking back to this, I was 13 and at school and I remember watching the Like a Virgin video and being totally blown away by her, I felt like I'd never seen anything like her and was immediately obsessed with her. I also remember seeing Desperately Seeking Susan and loved it so much. She was such a massive influence on me.

Anyone else or remember the first time with someone else in the public eye.

But needless to say, she and M Jackson were overly popular all over soviet world

bluevelvetears · 02/10/2025 17:30

I seem to think it was something where she was cavorting on a bed but don't know what. I've never liked her that much. When she first came out I thought she was awful and trashy and cheap and everything I didn't aspire be. It seemed like she was sex and self obsessed and I found it incredibly dull. I was a good girl I was!😂

I remember Madonna and thinking she was a bit weird for shouting about being a virgin (I didn't quite get the lyrics at the time) but I remember being very young and seeing Debbie Harry/Blondie and thinking Debbie Harry was the greatest thing ever.
I still really like Blondie/Debbie Harry.

Much prefer Debbie Harry and Blondie although Madonna's gone through so many reincarnations there is some of her later stuff I like.

She was in it to shock originally and it was all a bit 🥱

RaraRachael · 02/10/2025 17:39

Maybe I'm not her target audience but she never made any sort of impression on me.

Mochudubh · 02/10/2025 17:56

I remember first seeing her singing either Holiday or Lucky Star and thinking she looked a bit manky. I never understood her outfit in the studio bits of the Papa Don't Preach video (the black boob tube, pedal pushers and pumps) made her look really wee and dumpy.

OhNoNotSusan · 02/10/2025 18:00

i bought the record Like a Virgin
i loved Desperately Seeking Susan
its hard to believe now as i am not sure her voice is that good

Her Into The Groove video.
And I fell in love.

She was, and always will be, my first love.

I am 45 and still absolutely adore her music and her persona.

MrsMoastyToasty · 02/10/2025 18:10

I first saw her when her video appeared TOTP for the first time. She was out to shock rather than having any real talent.
I much preferred British female singers like Annie Lennox ,Kate Bush and Alison Moyet.

First time I saw Madonna was live - at The Hacienda in Manchester. She was performing live, and hardly anyone knew who she was then. Been a fan since then!

Emmz1510 · 02/10/2025 18:32

The Like a Virgin video for me too. However I’ve never really been a fan. I can appreciate her talent and she’s a massive star obviously but just not my thing.

Doingtheboxerbeat · 02/10/2025 18:40

Her performance at live aid singing Love Makes The World Go Round positively changed my brain chemistry - I was 13 at the time.

CharlotteStreetW1 · 02/10/2025 18:40

Live Aid. Loved her outfit.

My favourite song of hers is Like a Prayer with Borderline coming a close second.

MoominMai · 02/10/2025 18:43

@niftyfuss was 9 years old (in last year of Junior school) and suddenly on the TV there’s a woman dressed in black dancing quite animatedly. Was just quite fascinated by her for some reason and read her name as Mad Donna 😅 and wisely thought to myself ‘ah, that explains the energetic dancing’. Then my parents came in and switched it off lol.

I’ve never forgotten that moment for some weird reason and I later discovered that song was Lucky Star 🙂.

whattheysay · 02/10/2025 20:14

I can’t remember seeing her for the first time but I remember holiday and like a virgin. Get into the groove was the first single vinyl record (the small ones) I bought it was 1985 from Woolworths I was 9 or 10

JMSA · 02/10/2025 20:19

Absolutely LOVED her.
My favourite songs of hers are Angel, Material Girl and Dress You Up.

Me neither, I wouldn't know her f she walked through the door but I am definitely a target audience for anything like that. I was surprised when that Taylor Swift person who apparently has written some songs turned out to be a woman, sounds to be a very male name.

coolmum123 · 02/10/2025 21:58

I also remember finding out that she was going to be in a Pepsi commercial and watching ITV they had an advert announcing when they were going show the Pepsi ad. I think it might be the only time there was an ad about an ad. Needless to say I was there tuned in and that’s how she launched her Like a Prayer single. Fun times

SparkyBlue · 02/10/2025 22:13

I remember her on top of the pops singing like a virgin and my older sister and cousin were all excited and they knew who she was but I’d never seen or heard of her before

SpottyAardvark · 02/10/2025 22:30

I remember the first time Madonna was on TOTP, performing Hioliday. I wasn’t impressed at all & decided she could neither sing nor dance. I was more into cool indie bands at the time, though, so it’s not surprising that she wasn’t my thing.

I changed my mind when Papa Don’t Preach came out. Such a great song, and I realised that there was more to her than I thought.

KawasakiBabe · 02/10/2025 22:47

I saw Like A Virgin on TOTP, I liked her but not like loads of my friends. I hated the New Romantics so I was happy to have something new to listen to, but I was17 and preferred rock.

ILoveLukeAlderton · 02/10/2025 22:51

I don’t remember when I first became aware of her but I was obsessed as a young teen in a small dull town. She just seemed so cool and different. I collected tons of newspaper and magazine clippings about her and was gutted not to be old enough to see DSS - had to watch the Care Bears movie instead! I saw her live at Roundhay Park, my first ever concert, and again on the Blonde Ambition tour.

I had huge admiration for her and think she paved the way for the female artists today but it’s a bit sad how she is so desperate to stay young and relevant - she really doesn’t need to try so hard.

QueenOfCastille · 02/10/2025 22:55

I’d heard some of her singles in 1984, but the first time I remember seeing her was Live Aid, and I couldn’t understand why she had such a prominent slot in the lineup.

Clingfilm · 02/10/2025 23:00

Material Girl video when I was a child. Got really into her when I was about 11 and she was in full Erotica mode so half her output wasn't even allowed on the radio or on TV 🤣 bought every smash hits she featured in.

I think she'll only be truly lauded for the trailblazer she is when she's gone, which is sad.

Absolute icon of female power, doing her own thing and taking all the shit, cos she's a woman.

Sparklesandspandexgallore · 02/10/2025 23:04

I think it was seeing her perform Holiday or Lucky Stat on something like The Tube. She was dressed in black with her dancers also in black. She had a huge impact on me. I dressed like her and went to see her at Roundhay Park in the 80s. I remember wearing black for the gig and wore a cropped top with ripped leggings, along with lots of jangly bracelets and a crucifix.

niftyfuss · 02/10/2025 23:13

I love all these memories.
