Does anyone else remember the first time they saw Madonna?

I was just thinking back to this, I was 13 and at school and I remember watching the Like a Virgin video and being totally blown away by her, I felt like I'd never seen anything like her and was immediately obsessed with her. I also remember seeing Desperately Seeking Susan and loved it so much. She was such a massive influence on me.

Anyone else or remember the first time with someone else in the public eye.

It was on top of the pops, I was in primary school and I couldn’t understand what every was raving about.

She was rubbish then and she’s rubbish now.

I can’t remember when I first saw her, but I do still remember the excitement of going with my DF to see ‘Desperately Seeking Susan’, even though it was a 15 and I was only 13. DF was more impressed by Rosanna Arquette.

I'd heard Holiday (probably on the radio) but the first time I saw her was the Like A Virgin video which kind of shocked me with how powerful, present and committed she was, to what she was doing - like she had a clear idea of what she wanted to create and show that idea to us. Then my dad walked into the room and I panicked because I knew he'd go apeshit about her cavorting around and unashamedly using the word "virgin" - which he did lol.

I still hold to my initial response to her - much more so as the decades have gone by. To me she doesn't just reinvent herself, there's more to it than that. She uses her whole self, all of her body, voice, environment and everything she does - as set of artistic creative tools, to provoke engagement, connection, to stir. I honestly think she is an extraordinary person.

I do.

I was about 6, watching top of the pops - so maybe it was into the groove.

my mum, who wasn’t clueless about pop, was drawn out of the kitchen to ask me ‘who is this?’ And I said ‘Madonna’.

i enjoyed her music but have never bought and album or seen a concert. It’s more that she is phenomenal artists, incredibly hard working and creative . I passed her on the street a few times when I was living London as she lived near my cousin. I just said hi, but now i wish I’d started a conversation. It’s clear she has paved the way for so many women and that her enduring legacy and presence could only have been achieved by having the respect, support and loyalty of those around her. She is an e powerhouse and I am so happy to have had her in my life since that telly moment as an example of what a strong woman can do and be.
