How is this news?!

The front page of the daily mail is at it again. Not reporting the news but race baiting and causing upset and division.

EXCLUSIVE Migrant on disability benefits housed in retirement home with his family vows to use human rights to fight eviction... unless they are found a bigger home

this is not news. Let alone top-of-the-morning headline news. This is rich newspaper owners trying to manipulate the population into hating each other.

why do we stand for it? Its propaganda designed to make reform and riots seem inevitable. It’s literally a check box of things to make them angry. What happened to proper investigative journalism targeting corruption of the rich and powerful?

AIBU to think that this is not news but manipulation to make us angry?

Migrant housed in care home who moved family in says he won't go

Bangladeshi father-of-nine Shahidul Haque, 59, moved into a single-room flat in David Smith Court, in Reading, Berkshire, a complex reserved for residents over the age of 55, last July.

There appears to be a campaign at work to ensure our next government is right wing.

Ablondiebutagoody · 17/09/2025 09:48

Because it gets clicks. Including yours and people on this thread. Good work.

Weefreetiffany · 17/09/2025 09:52

Yes it will get clicks either way but lets discuss why its a problem too.

my grandparent who fought the nazis would be hella ashamed if I let some rightwing rag brainwash me into voting for one. Im sure yours would be too.

but where are people actually saying, well hang on a second, can’t newspapers stick to reporting news instead taking money from political parties to run articles designed to get them votes?

Edited to remove double post

OccasionalHope · 17/09/2025 09:55

I think it’s an interesting case TBF with plenty of blame to go round.

But ultimately the young wife and children have no right to live there, and the council has no responsibility to house the wife either as she is on a visa and does not have ILR. the children may be classed as British by descent so that is more of a grey area. I’m surprised she got the visa, as the applicant is supposed to show they have suitable housing and enough income.

In all honesty, my grandparent would probably be reading the daily mail and raging that we're being taken for a ride!

Weefreetiffany · 17/09/2025 09:57

this thread isn’t to discuss anything in the article. But how it is posted to make people angry and divide us. There’s lots going on that we might or might not agree with. But why this guy? Why now? Why headlined? Who benefits from this “story”?

OP posts:
MidnightPatrol · 17/09/2025 10:00

I’d say be dismissive of people who are concerned at your peril - they are I suspect very great in number, even if not vocal about it.

This guy is a good example really of ‘what exactly if the UK immigration / more general benefits system doing’.

  • Large family to support
  • Brings second wife from Bangladesh
  • Can’t speak much English
  • Council have to fund them all
  • Two families in two state-funded properties
  • Two young kids brought to the country + whatever is awarded for them.

I don’t think you need to be a xenophobe to query the value of this kind of immigration to the UK. And that’s nothing to do with the colour of his skin or country of origin.

Immigration is fine but it should be of net benefit to the UK.

The newspaper owners benefit from a political party that doesn’t want to tax the rich more. The mega wealthy want everyone being distracted and suspicious of each other so they can get away with their bad shit.

Susannipper · 17/09/2025 10:05

Politicians have no chance of power theses days unless backed by money and the real power holders -the media, or Elon musk or Putin etc. if they want a right wing government in the UK, they will get one.

user1476613140 · 17/09/2025 10:06

Well done at starting a thread about it to get the masses worked up...

But this isn’t democracy. How are we more upset about a “bad” migrant. Than by the rich destroying our democracy, right to vote and self determine?

This man has moved his wife and family into some kind of residential settting for older people. It isn't an establishment that allows families/children.
Great example of the rights of one individual superseding the rights of everyone else.
Merrily assisted by his British taxpayer funded human rights lawyers

But you don't get to decide what gets discussed. Bottom line is loads of people here don't read the DM and would never have seen this if you hadn't posted it. Now you've given air to the debate which will always have different views including ones you despise. It's naive to think newspaper are all about news and not furthering particular political agendas. They all do it in different ways and this one panders to the views of those who agree with it. Don't give it the time of day.

Surely the fact that of all the 'news' you've read/heard this morning, you've chosen to promote this article tells you why? It is purely money, they print stuff that people want to read which clearly you did so they are right. You read the Daily Mail, you read the article and now you've promoted it on social media. Not only have you encouraged the gutter press to continue to post this bollox by reading it yourself, you have also posted it to a whole new audience therefore generating yet more interest and yet more cash for them. So, you either work for them and this is advertising or you are too naive to the fact that you are doing their marketing for them. If you don't work for them, you are part of the problem!

Gladysknightgottogetaholdofmyself · 17/09/2025 11:02

The Daily Mail is a racial hatred inciting rag and so are the reader's comments.
Article about Orcas sinking a yacht off coast of Portugal.
Cue comments.
Get Orcas in the English channel
The Orcas wouldn't eat them they'd spit them out.
And so it went on.
Wtf can you do with people that think like that.
No more daily mail online for me it's depressing beyond words the rubbish they publish.

Oh what absolute paranoid rubbish. So we should never critique anything incase it brings the wrong kind of attention? Do you work for murdoch and have a vested interest in silencing critics?

OP posts:

Hella shamed? I think your grandparent who fought the nazi's might have other concerns about how England has evolved and clearly lost it's language.

Thirteencats · 17/09/2025 12:19

Yes, the DM has its own agenda and looks for stories that speak to the fears and interests of its target audience.

But that doesn't make the content untrue.

You seem to be suggesting that this story should not have been published because it makes immigrants look bad. And it's that kind of cover up / censorship that has riled up a lot of people.

But your critique was so basic it seemed like you didn't understand how things work -

I mean, the latter is the standard take on the DM on here and the former is a rhetorical question presumably as no one's funded much investigative journalism for decades and the last place I'd expect it is the DM's front pages.

But what is your point? A thinly veiled attack on how I am expressing myself? Good job we’re so busy tearing each other down we don’t have time to hold people accountable where it actually could make a difference.

@Suednymph also weirdly pedantic and missing the point entirely.

OP posts:
TonTonMacoute · 17/09/2025 13:36

What papers are you reading that aren't covering the corruption of the rich and powerful? I've been reading quite a lot about it recently.

I'm amazed that you think the press should hide stories about how British taxpayers' money is being spent on people who have no need or right to be here. Frankly, if people are genuinely worried about Reform winning the next election, then this family are exactly the sort of people who they need to clamp down on.

Weefreetiffany · 17/09/2025 14:01

@TonTonMacoute please can you share some examples of what you’re reading that I may have missed (broad net cast, find some of the french and spanish papers to be marginally better at calling out corruption)

but the mail has a huge reach in the anglosphere, let’s not pretend it doesn’t. Its about what gullible people accept. I know at least a dozen migrants all earning higher tax rate and in the “benefits/personal allowance withdrawn” margins. But we don’t hear about them unless its to say theyre stealing all the good jobs. But the mail posting something like this after the weekend march in london is inflammatory and divisive. It’s not a headline story for an international paper, like the wars in Ukraine or the middle east or, heaven forbid, some positive achievement somewhere. You can’t disagree with that.
