To think that no-one can adequately replace Melvyn Bragg on In Our Time?

...and my heart sinks to think of what hip young thing the BBC will replace him with.
I think I'd rather the program was cancelled.

I think Amol would do a great job. But I think he’s wonderful so maybe my judgement is off. Or Hannah Fry?
melvyn was amazing though

SilverliningHunter · 03/09/2025 21:53

I think it’ll be someone like Mary Beard

winewolfhowls · 03/09/2025 21:53

He should be considered a national treasure, I find the whole programme so soothing

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 03/09/2025 21:54

Alan Partridge has some interesting views...

RedNine · 03/09/2025 21:59

He really is a national treasure.

helenafalco · 03/09/2025 22:01

His voice is very distinctive, I find it soothing, will miss him. I like Amol and listen to him a fair bit but he has his fingers in too many pies at present, Today, Radical, and the UC, let the gig go to someone else

huffdragon · 03/09/2025 22:21

I’m delighted he’s gone.

Imlyingandthatsthetruth · 03/09/2025 22:31

Amol Rajan? Dear God no! In Our Time works because Melvyn Bragg keeps his presence to a minimum. Rajan would be so determined to demonstrate that he had the expertise no other experts would need to appear. He's ruined UC for me, don't even suggest he might wreck one of the few other remaining programmes that are worth spending time (and the licence fee) on!

Brefugee · 03/09/2025 22:32

as long as it is someone with intelligence and not one of the usual bloody (comedian) suspects, I'll be ok with it.

BlueEyedBogWitch · 03/09/2025 22:37

It’s the end of an era, but it’s time.

Some thoughts on who I’d like to replace him:

Sian Williams
Mary Beard
Matthew Syed
Tim Harford

Like these ideas. Definitely not Amol for me

Imlyingandthatsthetruth · 03/09/2025 22:38

Knowing the BBC they'll be lining up Richie Anderson...

BlueEyedBogWitch · 03/09/2025 22:39

Oh god.

It’s going to be him isn’t it? Or fucking Stephen Fry.

Please don’t let it be Fry 🙏🏻

Velvian · 03/09/2025 22:40

I actually think almost anyone would do a better job. He can make even the most interesting topics mind numbingly dull.

Wolbutter · 03/09/2025 22:41

I thought Tom Holland from TRIH, but not sure he'd be interested

Is it Matthew Syed who does sideways? I love that programme too, yes.

SilverliningHunter · 03/09/2025 22:56

The Rest Is History podcast makes megabucks, pretty sure the BBC can’t afford TH.

BlueEyedBogWitch · 03/09/2025 22:57

I’m worried it’s going to be Victoria Coren. Or, even worse, her husband.

DingDongDenny · 03/09/2025 22:59

I am delighted he is leaving. I've tried to listen several times, as the guests are great, but he is insufferable.

His droning, mumbling voice drives me mad.

OwlsR · 03/09/2025 23:01

I’m not a fan of him, but I hope the show continues. I worry it may be a victim of cuts as needs a lot behind the scenes research.

Saponarium · 03/09/2025 23:03

Much as Melvyn was a legend in his own right, I do think someone could do a much better job. The whole programme lacked energy. That said I would absolutely HATE it if some of the aforementioned celebs got the role (ie Victoria Coren, Stephen Fry or anyone else similarly smug, self-satisfied and overpaid).

showyourquality · 03/09/2025 23:17

It is beyond soothing, I listen to it regularly as I fall asleep. I will miss him but can see it is probably time.
Replacing him will be very difficult.

Grin That would crack me up, they should do that.

Oh I love VCM, she doesn’t seem smug at all to me (not saying that that means she should do In Our Time, more that she was delightful on Taskmaster).
