Sydney Sweeney’s Jeans

I’m just reading about the controversy over the Sydney Sweeney jeans advert and wondered what others thought about it.

AIBU to think it’s completely absurd?

It’s a play on the word jeans. It’s probably also a reference to the fact she’s attractive. I don’t think it’s offensive, or supportive of eugenics, or “fascist”.

Surely this is just people finding offence in anything?

Happy to be convinced otherwise.

Don't forget the soap mixed with her bathwater.

I can’t find anything tangible about her political leanings, only speculation. What is it you know?

She is a registered Republican. She registered in June last year when it was confirmed that Trump was the GOP candidate.

On that basis alone, not counting her other odd decisions (bathwater soap? multiple topless movie scenes?), I find her unreasonable.

Sydney Sweeney is reportedly a registered Republican, receives praise from President Trump

Sydney Sweeney’s jeans may be blue, but according to voting records, she votes red.

I’d be interested in hearing more from the ad makers, ie did they say at any point this is a bit risky but let’s do it. I bet they’re happy with all this.

This seems to be to be a Twitter controversy.

A few randos made some deranged comments on Twitter and now this non-story has become a news item. The fact that the US VP felt moved to comment on it says it all.

The world has gone mad.

I agree. We have become far too concerned about what the lunatic fringe(s) on the internet have to say.

Pretty girl is featured in an ad selling jeans. Tale as old as time. I'm sure we've all got much more interesting things to be thinking about.

HRTQueen · 05/08/2025 12:26

It's moved way beyond just a Twitter controversy among a few when you have the most powerful man in the world passing comment on it

Which is incredibly dumb.

We live in an age of insanity.

But it will blow over quickly.

Point me towards one living person who has “proclaimed” that white, blonde, blue-eyed people are the “master race”?

Er, hello
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Duke

Well, he’s a charmer isn’t he? Sorry if I’m missing something, because I only skimmed (due in part to what an unpleasant nutjob he appears to be) but he doesn’t seem to be quoted anywhere as saying that “white” is a master race?

Now we can agree he is an unpleasant racist and anti-Semite with abhorrent views. I can even see an argument for saying you can infer that he views himself as part of a master race from what he does say. But the OP described white, blue-eyed, blondes as a “self-proclaimed master race”. Even this abhorrent burke doesn’t appear - from your link (and I’ve no desire to dig further into his history and views) - to be proclaiming that.

But most importantly even if he were (or is) that does not make white, blue-eyed blondes a race, or even a group of people proclaiming themselves to be a master one. To suggest that every person meeting that description views themselves as superior is both wrong and deeply offensive, and I reject it, as I reject the ill-informed unpleasant and dangerous views of your example.

The advert was likely insensitive, since people have been upset by it, but it falls far, far short IMO of being a call to arms for all those white, blue-eyed blond genocidal maniacs apparently - in the OP’s world view - that are proclaiming their master race status.

He was asked. A reporter asked him so he replied. Along the lines of ‘If she’s a Republican then I like her’. It was a throwaway line because someone specifically asked him about it. What was he supposed to do?

ThatRealFawn · 05/08/2025 12:55

I think it’s all been blown out of proportion and a complete over reaction. However the company and its PR/marketing team should have foreseen this.

Fair enough, but the question was dumb. This is not something we need his opinion on. But yes, that's on the journo, not him.

I’m not sure what you think neo-Nazi means? It’s in the first line of the link I posted.

LondonLady1980 · 05/08/2025 13:11

The whole thing is ridiculous!

She’s stunning and it’s no surprise at all she was picked to be in the Ad.

A previous poster said any other woman would have been a better choice, how there are so many attractive women to choose from who aren’t blonde and blue eyed so why pick her? Why not someone with dark hair and dark eyes?

So are women with blonde hair and blue eyes not allowed to model anymore or be on TV? They should be punished for how they look?

I think it’s a great Ad and I’d certainly want to buy some of those jeans if I had the opportunity!

Well they are allowed, but must display suitable amounts of guilt and apologise profusely for having the temerity to be blonde and blue eyed.

I think of all the beautiful young women out there it was incredibly shortsighted to pick one whose genes match those of the self proclaimed "master race". It wouldn't have been an issue with a white woman with brown hair, red hair, brown eye, green eye, still insensitive though. Literally anything other than blonde, white and blue eyed. I think when you talk about genes and start talking about great genes it's not a hop skip and a jump away from naziism. Especially because it's not an ad for health or physical prowess, it's literally how she looks.

And her initials are "SS"...

We keep treating the lunatic fringe as part of a mainstream consensus and it needs to stop.

Commander Waterford (Vance) said this is how “Democrats think” and yet not one Democrat has even commented!

I think we need to stop giving internet loons attention.

MrsMitford3 · 05/08/2025 13:39

Well they have now put her on a billboard in Times Square so I think the campaign successful.

It is a direct copy of a Brook Shields Calvin Klein advert from the 80's-talking about good genes etc

In fairness, she is allowed to be a Republican. So is Arnold Schwarzenegger.

How do you feel about Brooke Shields being in the original genes/jeans Calvin Klein adverts?

Although she isn’t wriggling about seductively putting the jeans on and she is about twice Brooke Shields’ age.

I cannot understand any woman who supports a man like that.

Millions of women do support Trump however. It's not exactly a minority view, regardless of your view on it.
