Horrible norovirus/stomach flu

Edelweiss6529 · 30/07/2025 06:47

Anybody else experienced this awful virus? Never had anything like this in my life. Friday night I was violently sick out of nowhere which continued in to 24 hours of non-stop vomiting. To the point, it was just bile as nothing in my stomach, passed out on the bathroom floor. Ended up with a high temperature in bed for two days, can’t eat anything can only manage water. DD is 10 months and vomited once on Thursday but apart from that seems fine. DS is three and vomited once on Sunday night, has had a raised temperature on and off but seems fine. DH had a raised temperature on Saturday night and a headache, sore throat but otherwise it seems fine and hasn’t been sick. I on the other hand I’ve never been so sick in my life. Five days into this now I’ve stopped being sick but my body will not let me eat food it’s so hard to chew and swallow currently sat at the kitchen table trying to force some cereal down. Temperature keeps spiking again on and off throughout the days. I’ll start to feel like I’m getting slightly better and then it will all come back again. Starting to feel so deflated.

Sorry you are feeling so grim. Some viruses take 10 days to pass through. And you are probably run down from broken nights and caring for young dc.

I am not a doctor but you can get away without eating for a while as long as you stay hydrated. Small sips of water or flat lemonade or something like lucozade every 15 mins. Or ask your dh to get you some rehydration powders from the chemist. So no need to rush eating if you don’t feel hungry.

Then when you do eat, just stick to crackers, dry toasts, apple puree or tinned pears.

I don’t suppose you have a private doctor call out service near you do you? They are expensive but sometimes, when a stomach bug is not going away, they can give you an injection in the bum which makes you feel a lot better. ££££ but worth it! Otherwise try and rest as much as possible and make sure you drink enough. Hope you feel much better soon 💐

Did it start suddenly? That is one of the characteristics of Noro, it says above though that the worst is usually over in three days?

Could it be Covid? Have you taken a test?

Edelweiss6529 · 30/07/2025 17:52

Thank you for all the replies. I’ve been for bloods today so will see if anything comes back. My main concern is that I feel so unbelievably nauseas constantly, it doesn’t come and go, no respite. Thankfully they’ve prescribed me some anti sickness so I hope that helps. Told me to go back if I’m no better by Monday. I’ve never experienced nausea like this before, & my temperature is still fluctuating. Im starting to wonder whether my gut is damaged from the virus. It’s definitely not normal how unwell I feel, I’m completely miserable

Yes extremely suddenly, was getting ready to watch a film with DH then boom. The worst as in the initial vommiting has stopped, but I have a constant very severe nausea which is making me feel very unwell

Poor you! Glad you have been able to see a doctor. Hope the anti-nausea pills work. Noro is absolutely horrible.

When you are feeling better, maybe get yourself a good probiotic prescribed by the doctor? And start eating some gut friendly foods. I hope you are able to rest and that you feel much better soon

I had a horrible virus like this a few months ago, so violently sick (both ends actually 🤢) and then I was in so much pain in my muscles/back that I couldn't lay down but when I sat up I felt like I was going to pass out. Just felt horrendous. I hope you feel better soon

Edelweiss6529 · 02/08/2025 05:53

Hi everyone, I’m still not ok, been back and forth to gp and yesterday to a&e. Something isn’t right at all, all the initial symptoms have gone and I’m tolerating fluids fine, my body had gone 4 days without food so when I started to feel better and hungry I started to try and eat. Although if I eat anything at all even bland crackers or dry toast within 30 min I become debilitated with nausea and jittery until I end up vomiting, this has been going on now a total of 8 days. Drs did my bloods and gave my an injection to help with the sickness. Gave me some tablets for stomach acid. Bloods all normal apart from slightly raised liver alt which they’re not concerned about. Again this morning I feel quite well but if I eat I know I’ll go downhill again. Why is my body rejecting food so badly? I feel like somethings going on I’m so concerned.

Poor you it really is horrendous 😢. Just maybe some clear liquids or dry toast. Cereal is not great as dairy products can make sickness worse.its good you have medical help.sometimes it can take a while to clear up .DD was ill for 3 weeks! Rotavirus in the end.just small sips of water and try to rest as much as possible if you can.

Theheattheflies788 · 02/08/2025 07:53

Really sorry to read this op! That’s horrendous!

Normally those anti-sick injections work well.

I wonder at this point if it’s worth having a stool sample sent off to see if anything else is going on? Surely something would have come up in your bloods though? I am NOT medically trained so these are random suggestions!

Is this definitely viral; or do you think something could be wrong mechanically like a blockage or pancreatitis?

I was about to say trust your gut op but that’s unfortunate wording! What I mean is keep pushing to see someone if this isn’t improving.

In the meantime, maybe suck on some glucose tablets or ask at your chemist for rehydration meds?

I found this info on-line which might be helpful? It does say that symptoms can linger for a few weeks or rebound.

Hope you turn a corner soon op! 💐

Once you start feeling better, a few tablespoons of some home made chicken bone broth can work wonders if anyone is available to make it for you?

Hi OP, sorry to hear this. My kids have had this, this week. Touching wood I don't catch it as I hate being sick. Could you get hold of some bone broth, warm it up gently and sip it? It's meant to be very nutritious and the warmth may help.

Dramatic · 02/08/2025 10:58

I would also push for a stool sample just in case it's some sort of stomach infection which may need treatment. Are you in pain with it?

Edelweiss6529 · 03/08/2025 07:59

Hi everyone. I really do appreciate all of the replies. It’s difficult to reply to everybody as obviously I’m feeling very weak. Yesterday, I think I might have turned a corner. Managed to keep down half a smoothie. And a banana. I’ve woke up this morning and I’m attempting some toast. So I’m praying this stays down. Spoke to a doctor from a 111 call back yesterday afternoon, who said they think it’s gastritis. So basically the stomach bug has gone but I’ve kind of been left with this damage of inflammation or whatever it is.

OP posts:
Hillsmakeyoustrong · 03/08/2025 09:56

Ahh good luck with the toast OP. Glad you made progress yesterday. Just to reiterate the bone broth restores the gut lining as has collagen in it along with natural electrolytes to restore hydration. It is anti inflammatory as well.

Edelweiss6529 · 03/08/2025 15:54

the toast stayed down so an hour or so afterwards I tried a bit of cereal and that made me extremely nauseous. Spent all day trying my best not to vomit and my temp is back up. Going back to GP in morning to request further investigation. Something doesn’t feel right, I shouldn’t be spiking temperatures 10 days in

Notquitegrownup2 · 03/08/2025 16:31

Oh bless you. It sounds ghastly! Stick to toast and coke and maybe scrambled egg or weak chicken soup if you need something more.

I was always taught to avoid dairy if recovering. It could therefore have been the milk on the cereal that got the bugs excited again.

Honestly, don’t think it’s the bug anymore. I’ve definitely had a sickness bug. But I think that’s gone, but it’s left me in a state like it’s triggered something in me whether it’s an issue with my stomach or something else. So worried it’s a gallbladder issue or pancreatitis or something. But the doctor wouldn’t entertain it because all my bloods came back normal. I’ve just never felt so sick in my entire life. I’ve got a three-year-old. And a 10 month old. And I’ve also got a 90-year-old Grandad who relies on me. I’ve never known a sickness bug to go on for this long if it still is the bug. X

Hillsmakeyoustrong · 03/08/2025 18:35

OP when I was in India, I had a terrible bug that went on for two weeks. I was bleeding instead of poohing, lost a stone in a week and was constantly running a fever. British airways kindly upgraded me to business class so I could lie horizontal but they also nearly didn't let me on.

It turned out I had campylo bacteria (?sp) and needed antibiotics. Whatever you have, it will have 99% been triggered by the bug and will be treatable but it's sheer misery when you are so desperately ill and naturally causes a lot of anxiety.

Did the GP test for plasma viscosity or any other infection or inflammatory markers?

This
take a Covid test. There’s is a lot of it about right now, new strain

I always get really bad diarrhea and sometimes vomiting (certainly nausea), and then high temp and sweats start. Very common symtoms . The sore throat is strong indicator it isn’t a normal Norovirus type thing.

Edelweiss6529 · 05/08/2025 05:58
