To wear this to a wedding?

spooge · 27/07/2025 08:32

My sister's friend is getting married in 2 weeks' time and I've left it rather late to find a good dress to wear so I've had to resort to online shopping without much luck. However, this morning I found this beautiful dress on Zara for a decent price, and I think the floral details would be perfect for the season and location of the wedding on a rural farm.

My only concern is that the base of the dress may be too close to white to be appropriate as a wedding guest. I have no intention of 'upstaging' the bride, so would this be acceptable to wear?
I know I could ask the bride directly, but we are not very close and have not spoken much before and I don't want to put any unecessary stress on her so near to the big day. Thoughts?

I say go ahead if you like it, a crocheted dress isn’t going to upstage a bride.

AvidJadeShaker · 27/07/2025 08:36

is it suitable for a farm wedding? It looks see through to me.

Largestlegocollectionever · 27/07/2025 08:36

Yes it’s fine

ObtuseMoose · 27/07/2025 08:41

It's not in the least bit bridal but a crocheted dress will be completely see through. Flashing your underwear isn't appropriate at a wedding, it looks more like a beach cover up to me.

Digdongdoo · 27/07/2025 08:41

I'd imagine you could do very much better than that with 2 weeks notice. It's a completely unlined crochet mini dress. Not wedding attire in my opinion.

Silvertulips · 27/07/2025 08:43

I agree the color and design are fine, it a knitted dress in something that’s see through. Nope.

DressDilemma · 27/07/2025 08:47

Looks more like beachwear than occasion wear.

VeryStressedMum · 27/07/2025 08:49

I think this is a joke post because who would pick a see through mini dress that looks like a beach cover up to wear to a wedding and think it's suitable

Coffeeishot · 27/07/2025 08:50

It is see through i am sure you can find something else,

I would wear something underneath. Bride said dress code is more on the casual/relaxed side so it doesn't have to be black tie attire.

I'd aim for somewhere between black tie and beach wear personally

JuicySmoochy · 27/07/2025 08:53

That looks lovely to me. It doesn’t
ok anything like a wedding dress.

Sparkletastic · 27/07/2025 08:54

Cute for the beach

There is a difference though between black tie dresses, and see through crocheted mini dresses, even if you wear something underneath. If that’s the dress for you then whatever, but there is a world of suitable nicer dresses between ‘not quite black tie’ and this dress. 2 weeks notice is loads of time to look for something nicer

NeedZzzzzssss · 27/07/2025 08:55

Sorry but that looks cheap and ugly, also is it see-through? Surely you can find something better!

I think beach is not good, at least acceptable for a formal workplace. It's a wedding not a BBQ!

TheRealGoose · 27/07/2025 08:57

I think there is a huge gap between casual and beach wear to be honest and I’m not sure the bride meant quite that relaxed. But to answer the question, it isn’t too close to white, that’s not the issue, no one is going to think you’re the bride or upstaging her in that. On the Zara website you can see it really is just a net beach dress.

I don't have the largest budget and I've had a browse in charity shops etc but nothing else so far has been the style and size I'm after. I'll keep looking though.

This dress is £60, again there is a huge range between charity shop and a £60 ugly dress, keep trying!

Yes I think that's the problem, casual to me for a wedding just means not a ballgown

Coffeeishot · 27/07/2025 09:01

It looks fine if you are on holiday but you might look out of place at a wedding, you should be able to get something for £60.

VeryStressedMum · 27/07/2025 09:17

What are you going to wear underneath that dress a bikini or another dress underneath the dress ?

There's dozens of cheaper, more appropriate dresses on the zara website alone.

Goldengirl123 · 27/07/2025 09:20

You should wear whatever you feel comfortable in. It’s nothing like a wedding dress

Genevieva · 27/07/2025 09:22

It looks like a see-through hessian sack. Far too short, not cut nicely and not at all smart.
