To wear this to a wedding?

spooge · 27/07/2025 08:32

My sister's friend is getting married in 2 weeks' time and I've left it rather late to find a good dress to wear so I've had to resort to online shopping without much luck. However, this morning I found this beautiful dress on Zara for a decent price, and I think the floral details would be perfect for the season and location of the wedding on a rural farm.

My only concern is that the base of the dress may be too close to white to be appropriate as a wedding guest. I have no intention of 'upstaging' the bride, so would this be acceptable to wear?
I know I could ask the bride directly, but we are not very close and have not spoken much before and I don't want to put any unecessary stress on her so near to the big day. Thoughts?

Gorgeous dress for a holiday abroad or the beach.
For a wedding, it’s too see-through.

Enko · 27/07/2025 09:27

I dont think its suitable for a wedding even uf relaxed atite.

What sort of dresses do you like? Im aure you can get help to find something in your budget

Superhansrantowindsor · 27/07/2025 09:28

Depends - church wedding? Barn? Beach?

you won’t upstage the bride and you can stand in the back of photos so if you are dead set on it then get it.
it looks like a beach cover up to me.

ComtesseDeSpair · 27/07/2025 09:30

Try Vinted, there will be loads of occasion dresses in all kinds of styles. This isn’t a great dress. Apart from anything else, unless it’s 36 degrees out on the day, you’ll be cold, there’s barely anything of you covered.

VeryStressedMum · 27/07/2025 09:17

What are you going to wear underneath that dress a bikini or another dress underneath the dress ?

Oh no, not a bikini! I was thinking of a light coloured slip dress underneath.

For £60 budget you can find much better. I’d say too white, too see through, and far too casual (even if they’ve said it doesn’t need to be super formal, this is still too beach cover up like).

It's a farm/barn wedding. My sister has told me that her friend is aiming for a more rustic look for the event, so not as formal as a church ceremony I would assume.

Coffeeishot · 27/07/2025 09:38

What is your sister wearing have you showed her this dress what did she think?

ComtesseDeSpair · 27/07/2025 09:38

Do you look like the model? The dress is shapeless and unflattering. The model can just about pull it off because she’s tall and thin and willowy; if you’re not all of those, you’ll look like an overstuffed crochet tote bag. Even a rustic and semi-casual wedding is an occasion, and other guests will dress accordingly, a beachwear type outfit like this will stand out.

MissAvainthesun · 27/07/2025 09:41

Not for a wedding no also it’s quite short.

KeenSnail · 27/07/2025 09:46

Some similar shapes that may be more formal than crochet;

A great place to look for mini wedding guest dresses is ‘Coast’ on the Debenhams website. So many really beautiful options.

I’ve just typed this into google ‘floral barn wedding guest outfit dress’ and there’s lots of options that have come up under £60 half the shops I’ve never heard of (I’m not trendy 🤣) like something called Mova but hopefully you might be able to find something more suitable and delivered on time…good luck hope you find something.

Too short

mightbetheone · 27/07/2025 09:54

I think that’s a perfect dress for a barn wedding. Really well suited and could also be worn again with boots for a festival or similar. Loose curls, maybe a flower in your hair….perfect!

Could you not just get something to go under it? I’m sure M&S do cami style underwear.

It isn't appropriate as a wedding guest dress, maybe for a bbq or beach party but not for a wedding. Too casual vibes, how about renting a dress:

Rent from Selfridges - HURR

Rent multiple sizes directly from Selfridges, one of HURR's official brand partners.

That is a very very ugly dress! It looks like an embroidered string vest!

Thank you for the nice comment, and yes, I will wear something to cover up underneath.

I am clearly in the minority but I think it’s a lovely dress. Clearly on the casual side, but with a slip underneath, I think it would work.

Good! I know you asked for opinions but remember that everyone’s taste is different and there will be some people on here being mean for the sake of it. Go with what makes you feel nice.

BlueandPinkSwan · 27/07/2025 10:32

Great for beach, perfect, elsewhere nope.
Style and Beauty would have a field day, some over there fawn over the daftest looking clothles in the name of fashion.
