Is it just me or is Live 8 not talked about?

I’ve got really emotional watching the Live Aid concert this weekend - the acts were excellent- I’m very nostalgic for the summer of 1985.

But we’re now as far away from the ‘Live 8’ concert in July 2005 as that was from Live Aid in 1985 - but no one seems to talk about Live 8? The only memory I’ve got of Live 8 is Dido being flown in to do her bit - I was cleaning my flat while listening to Radio 1 (I think)

I remember live aid. I watched it on TV at the time. I am 54. I have no recollection of Live 8 at all. It came up a few weeks ago on local radio and I had to google it. I honestly can't remember it at all.

RuthW · 14/07/2025 12:13

I watched Live Aid. I’ve never heard of Live 8 so there lies your answer.

Needmorelego · 14/07/2025 12:15

Unfortunately it was overshadowed by the bombs a few days after 🙁

TheBuffetInspector · 14/07/2025 12:22

Dido was flown in...

And?

I have recollections now you have said it, but its like the second Band Aid single - these people are not megastars, it's a charity buy only rather than a massive event.

RoxytheRexy · 14/07/2025 12:22

It’s probably because it was shit

Rosecoffeecup · 14/07/2025 12:23

Pretty sure I went to this but couldn't tell you who performed

Says it all

afaloren · 14/07/2025 12:24

I went to Live 8 and I do remember some of the acts. We had a good day. I seem to remember it was the same day as the ladies’ Wimbledon final and I kept checking the score on my phone!

No. GB holding the Olympics was. The celebrations.

Nothing was so important that it was overshadowed though.

Perspective and love to all involved.

NeverTrustTheScales · 14/07/2025 12:26

It was shit, best forgotten

Live 8 was only 5 days before the bombings. Any discussion about the message of the event, that would have happened during the G8 summit, will have been cut dead on July 7th.
Some stories do just stay in the public consciousness for longer though. I worked on an anniversary programme about the 2005 tsunami and was surprised how little awareness younger people had of it. Even those of us who remembered it vividly from the time had forgotten some of the scale of the horrors.

I think you have hit the nail on the head. The only long term mention of it seems to be when Pink Floyd is discussed and it being the last time the four long term members performed together. Richard Wright died not long afterwards, as incidentally did Syd Barrett.

MyUmberSeal · 14/07/2025 12:36

It was a naff attempt at recreating some of the magic and charity momentum that the actual Live Aid event had. It didn’t work and it’s wasn’t that same, so people have forgotten.

Velvian · 14/07/2025 12:51

DH and I went, it was OK, but only that.

KaydenJayden · 14/07/2025 12:52

Thanks to everyone who contributed to this - yes I think Live 8 nowhere near replicated the momentum of 1985’s Live Aid - can’t believe apparently 40% of the worlds population watched Live Aid - that statistic has blown my mind

My friend went and she said it only livened up when Robbie Williams came on.
The other live aid song is barely played at Christmas time either! People seem to like the original one more.

ZoraBennett · 14/07/2025 12:56

I was there, but only to see Pink Floyd really. Managed to get to just outside the VIP 'golden circle'. It was a good day, but very hot. In the evening, we all threw empty water bottles at the security guards who filled them up and threw them back. You didn't get your own water bottle back, which post-covid now seems extra grim.

Yes! Robbie was great - it was a bit dull until then!

KrisAkabusi · 14/07/2025 12:58

It was nowhere near as big and had no lasting impact. Why would it be talked about?

I didn’t actually watch the original - so didn’t realise tbh that it wasn’t as big

from what I’ve read though the event took place in more countries than Live Aid

I’d agree with this

Live 8 had the slogan

Make Poverty History with those bracelets

I dont remember this event at all. Surely I must have heard of it at the time but no recollection now.

HRTQueen · 14/07/2025 13:09

It was a bit rubbish in compression, no great standout performances like Queen or anything that was particularly memorable

I was there and enjoyed it, Snoop Dogg was great but it was nothing like Live Aid

Squidgemoon · 14/07/2025 13:10

I went to Live 8 and had a brilliant time. It just didn’t have the same impact though I agree.

yeesh · 14/07/2025 13:10

Never heard of live 8 tbh
