Is it just me or is Live 8 not talked about?

I’ve got really emotional watching the Live Aid concert this weekend - the acts were excellent- I’m very nostalgic for the summer of 1985.

But we’re now as far away from the ‘Live 8’ concert in July 2005 as that was from Live Aid in 1985 - but no one seems to talk about Live 8? The only memory I’ve got of Live 8 is Dido being flown in to do her bit - I was cleaning my flat while listening to Radio 1 (I think)

I went purely for the Pink Floyd reunion.

I went to Live 8 and it was brilliant. But it has nowhere near the same iconic status that Live Aid had so it won’t be remembered as much.

it ran hours behind schedule and they were telling people to leave to avoid getting stuck in London overnight. We stayed until the end and then they just let everyone on the underground for free to get everyone out of the area.

I’ve kept newspaper cuttings from the next day showing the ariel pics of the crowds and reviews of performances etc.

Live 8 had the slogan

Make Poverty History with those bracelets

Edited

I remember the rubber bracelets. Not the concert. I was a teen, we had those bracelets for every charity going, our arms were full

I went to live 8. Long day. No alcohol. I’ve been to better concerts. Best bits were Robbie and Pink Floyd. Definitely not on the same level as live aid. Had to google who were playing. I remember Mariah and Madonna being a bit diva ish and we wished they would finish to get on with the rest! It ran over. I think they had some funky rotating stage that broke.

Was going to say similar. TV events were always bigger before the internet and all the extra channels. Didn't something like 30 million people watch Den serve Angie divorce papers in EastEnders? That must have been over half the entire UK population at the time!

Also Live Aid had Queen, and their performance went down in history. You could never recreate that.

Haha I watched the Den and Angie thing! It was the talk at school next day!

I thought it was the Christmas Day episode that happened?
I didn't watch EastEnders then so could be wrong.

SeaShellsSanctuary1 · 14/07/2025 15:12

In 1985 you had 4 TV channels and music was everything. The fact that this was a first made it a huge thing.

It's extremely common for a sequel not to live up to anywhere near the popularity of the original. 20 years later we had 24hr news, music streaming and the internet.

It was never going to be remembered like the first

I was about to come on and point out your typo. 😳. Never heard of Live 8!

I spose it proves my point! As does the fact I was totally unaware of what seems to be the most important thing - Pink Floyd connection!

I think I was in year 7 or 8. It was a big deal. It’s when I first learnt about the original one. But since then they have done a couple more and if I’m honest I’m so bored of charity singles. They don’t land like they used to.

Wasn't there some sort of text lottery to get tickets?

Yes, text in to enter the ballot. I had no interest until Pink Floyd were announced and then fired off 20 texts on my nokia brick 😀 If you were succesful you got two free tickets.

We got a parking ticket on the motorbike so it wasn't exactly free for us though!

FreddysFingers · 14/07/2025 17:31

I remember Live 8 being on the TV, but didn't watch much of it.

I don't remember Live Aid because I would have been very little, but of course I know of Live Aid and the performances that were on there.

Omg Live Earth passed my by completely I think so thanks for the heads up I’m now madly googling

Haha
I was mega pregnant during live 8 so definitely wouldn't have been at that but actually I really don't remember even being aware of it at the time
