To stop DD playing tennis

GhraceIllria · 11/07/2025 10:37

My DD is 15, she has been at a tennis school in the south of France for 3 years, and is really passionate, she wants to go pro or at least play through the US college system.

Anyway she is doing pretty well and enjoying it but she has picked up a habit of screaming either into her towel in the change overs, or after winning a point out loud. Her coach has told her she needs to compose herself better, but she can’t seem to help it. DH thinks it’s funny, she’s just passionate, we wouldn’t care if she was a boy.

I’m tempted to tell DD unless she can compose herself better and stop making herself look silly, she will have to give up or take a break.

AIBU?

Have you been watching Sabalenka OP? Is this a really weird way of saying "isn't her screaming annoying?"

I want to like her but her entitlement and tantrums don't help.

You cannot be serious?

Winning comment

Hankunamatata · 11/07/2025 13:12

She's just a drama lama. She will grow up

😆 You must be old. As old as me, at least.

TakeMe2Insanity · 11/07/2025 13:13

Sorry but what does being a boy have to do with it?

myheadsjustmush · 11/07/2025 13:43

Well after watching Wimbledon, screaming like this will be seen as the norm.

One guy sounded like a cow every time he hit the ball........ 😂

Each to their own - it really wouldn't bother me. However, if it is going to impact her moving through the ranks, I'm sure her coach will find a way through this.

I see what you did there 😀

MsJemimaPuddleDuck · 11/07/2025 13:51

You wouldnt care if she was a boy screaming? Yabu obviously dont destory your daughters dreams.

OneBlossomBee · 11/07/2025 13:53

This has to be a bored school kid or you are the 15yo in question. Why would being a boy make any difference? Plenty of female tennis players made some kind of noise in matches like Serena or Maria Sharapova, but their opponents did complain sometimes. Screaming all the time, for any gender, would be excessive in a sports match and annoy their opponent though. This post has to be a wind up though.

I’ve no idea! I loved to congratulate posters for their wit, like responder number 1 in this case.

Jaybail · 11/07/2025 14:08

Why wouldn't you care if she was a boy? It's unsportsmanlike behaviour, regardless of your child's gender.

Skybluepinky · 11/07/2025 14:40

Are you bored, or is this a joke post?
Of course she shouldn’t give up.

It works for Sabalenka.

It's not, in the traditional sense, very girly to act like that but, hey, if she's winning then it's achieving her aim and i like the fact that girls dont give a stuff if they are achieveing (and its not hurting anyone).

If she makes it she needs to be prepared to be front pages on a bad news day!

Have you seen tennis? This is normal. Help her process with mental health conditioning. There are sports psychologists around who will help.

The fact you wouldn’t care if she were a boy speaks volumes though. Probably constantly pushing herself to prove she’s as good as any boy. Poor girl.

And me!

And going back further wasn't Ile Nastase a bit of a mare too? I am too young for him!

Ireallywantadoughnut36 · 11/07/2025 15:07

"My daughter is reacting in an overly emotional way to things she doesn't like, so I'm going to over react in an emotional way because I don't like it"
Seems legit.

JRM17 · 11/07/2025 15:09

This is why I can't stand women's tennis (LOVE men's tennis), they scream and grunt and moan all the time and it is soooo irritating. I'd tell her straight, stop shouting like a banshee or stop playing tennis. Or try one of those shock collars they use to stop dogs barking.

Fuzzymuddle33 · 11/07/2025 15:28

I genuinely see no issue with what she is doing.

is consider changing coach if he or she is telling her to stop doing it!

its just her way to cope mentally, expelling frustration is a postive.

ThisZanyPinkSquid · 11/07/2025 15:45

She’s 15 and still working out how to fully regulate her emotions. She sounds extremely passionate. Have a word with her about her composure and how it comes across but she’s still young

Mancity08 · 11/07/2025 15:56

She’s only probably doing what some of the pro tennis players do ! She’s letting out emotion she’s getting older.
