To stop DD playing tennis

GhraceIllria · 11/07/2025 10:37

My DD is 15, she has been at a tennis school in the south of France for 3 years, and is really passionate, she wants to go pro or at least play through the US college system.

Anyway she is doing pretty well and enjoying it but she has picked up a habit of screaming either into her towel in the change overs, or after winning a point out loud. Her coach has told her she needs to compose herself better, but she can’t seem to help it. DH thinks it’s funny, she’s just passionate, we wouldn’t care if she was a boy.

I’m tempted to tell DD unless she can compose herself better and stop making herself look silly, she will have to give up or take a break.

So this is an actual scream after the fact and not a huff or grunt as she hits the ball?

There's a big difference between making a noise as youre whacking a ball and walking off, grabbing a towel and stuffing your face into it and screaming.

There's really no need for that. Hopefully she'll grow out of such behaviours.

Its such a very unlikely thing for a person to actually do, tbh.

No not so much a grunt, she’s not about power like some of the louder pros. Shes much more about speed/angles/top spin. She often draws rally’s out long and then after winning the point she will just scream for some reason.
Because it’s not in the middle of the point or an obscenity it’s technically allowed, but it’s jarring.

Wow you are all being a bit belittling and mean, all be it you think you are hilarious . Sounds like maybe some sort of compulsion or tic which she can't help. Like the frustration is building up and has to come out somehow . Is she drinking some sort of sweeteners / flavours / colouring which could maybe be excitatory to the nervous/ neurological system ?

BrendaBleddynsBeachBall · 11/07/2025 16:58

So you’re prepared to derail her entire professional sporting career because she makes noises you don’t like?

The op would have to be a fairly crappy parent to not have ruled all that out before taking to the Internet, dont you think?

I assumed she would have already investigated such things and had them ruled out, leaving silliness or attention seeking.

Boreded · 11/07/2025 17:06

Don’t be ridiculous - ruin her potential career for no reason other than the composure of a teenager…she will learn composure or she won’t make it. Either way this is an issue for her coaches and not for you.

😆 I loathe the grunting, groaning and temper tantrums from both the men and the women.

Some of them need to stand in a corner til they've calmed down (there's not really scope for a naughty step on a tennis court!)

And me!

And going back further wasn't Ile Nastase a bit of a mare too? I am too young for him!

Edited

Yes he was, well, Nasty.

Good one!

MaidOfSteel · 11/07/2025 18:19

Please don’t derail her career, OP. We need more British players at the top of the game!

I read an article in the New York Times just yesterday about the psychological warfare tennis players use on each other - they called it "the dark arts." Apparently it's quite common at the pro level to use screaming and other noises to irritate the other player in the hopes of throwing them off their game. It sounds like your DD is well on her way to becoming pro.

Bamboozledbylife · 11/07/2025 19:01

What's being a boy got to do with anything?

Julimia · 11/07/2025 19:36

Is this real?? If so play it down , ignore it forget about it it will pass.
You ever watched Wimbledon??!

Kjpt140v · 11/07/2025 19:46

She'll never forgive you, nor should she.

Britneyfan · 11/07/2025 19:50

I would not derail my daughter’s passion and potential career because she is doing this, no.

Araminta1003 · 11/07/2025 19:55

Maybe she is using it as some sort of primordial release of pressure? Do not always assume the worst.
DD does a Yoga class and they all scream their heart out.
Obviously, if it is done to put opponents off that is not good, but if it is pressure release I think that is a different matter so you should talk to her about it.

Sidebeforeself · 11/07/2025 19:55

Toddlers let out their emotions by screaming. 15year olds should have more self control. Not because it’s unladylike like but because it’s unnecessary, rude and attention seeking.

Araminta1003 · 11/07/2025 19:56

And honestly just generally, if you have a gifted child, don’t make it about yourself, just support, support and support some more. They put enough pressure on themselves! They need you to be steady and understanding.

Brilliant 😂

Deathinparadisefan · 11/07/2025 20:13

Don’t stop your girl from playing tennis. Instead rally round and help her.

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 11/07/2025 21:13

If she is good enough to get a US college scholarship then she'll be sorted for life. Don't stop her now.

I know several poeple who played us college tennis and they're now all loaded hedge fund manager types.

Aspanielstolemysanity · 11/07/2025 21:20

Maybe just scream every time you accomplish something when she's around, that should soon cure her Grin
