Hi my scales say I’m about 17 stone I have big legs and a weird stomach there’s no denying I’m a big girl but the top of my stomach is flat however it’s the bottom part just bellow belly button that is big and it’s hard to (it even hurts to squeeze it) however being 17stone I assumed I should be about 18-20 however I’m not I fit comfortably in clothes that are size 10-12 and the biggest size I wear is a 16 to me for someone who is 17 stone I should definitely be in bigger clothes yet anything bigger than a 16 is to big
is this normal?

I honestly think it must be the type of clothing. As I say I’m usually a size 8-10, currently pregnant with my second baby and I’m yet to have to buy any maternity clothes really because lots of my clothes- especially those from Shein & my trusty primark comfy leggings are stretchy material and still fit comfortably over my bump while approaching my third trimester.

Yeah in a 10-12 it’s normally loose tops leggins hoodies
12-14 flares vests tighter tops trousers skirts
14-16 in tight dresses ect
im just confused but assuming its just the size of the clothes

It is what it is, ‘normal’ or not. You must know in your heart of hearts that if you need a plane seatbelt extender, you are not a size 10-12.

The question is, if you’re unhappy and uncomfortable, are you ready to change it? At 5’6 and 17 stone your BMI is around 38 so you could consider weight loss injections if you’ve genuinely tried a proper calorie controlled diet.

i 1000% know I’m not the ideal body for a 10-12 however I was just using this for a reference in my post. I have t flown before and am anxious weather I will need a seatbelt extension I’ve seen people bigger than me not need one so I was asking

getting checked out for the lower stomach seems sensible, being localised and painful is concerning. I’m 5’10”, 16 stone and in a 16-18. Can do 14 in stretchy or baggy clothes but 10-12 is no chance.

Maybe you are ‘lucky’ and carry extra weight less obviously

Figfug · 01/07/2025 18:02

Can you get a measuring tape and measure your waist? That way you’d know if you need an extender

Allseeingallknowing · 01/07/2025 18:05

Mrsttcno1 · 01/07/2025 17:19

Primark & shein are both big sizing, h&m is as well I’d say. Sizing does differ massively though and as I say it depends what clothes. A pair of fitted trousers or a button up corset top would be a truer reflection of what size “fits” than say leggings, a jumper, floaty dress or t shirt- I’m not a size 6 but fit into my sisters leggings and dresses, wouldn’t fit her jeans though!

Strange- I find those three stores small on sizing! Must be my strange shape!

Allseeingallknowing · 01/07/2025 18:08

OP- I’m 5’6”, 13.5 stone and no way could I fit into a 10 or 12. I am 20 on top and 16-18 bottom.

Last time I measured my waist I was just on 42 inches when researching it says a Ryanair seatbelt is 30 inches and I’m confused if it’s 30 inches all together or 30 inches both sides of the seatbelt

This is such bollocks 😂 I'm the same height as you and I'd be the size of a bus if I weighed 17 stone. There's no way.

It might just be different outfits! Lots of my lounge type sets are from there and they’re really stretchy material I’ve found x

If you have a 42" waist there's no way on god's little green earth you're fitting into a size 10-12.

I'm, 5'6" and size 10 and my waist is 28".

Something's really not adding up here!

Would you be okay giving us the rest of your measurements to try and solve this mystery?

CrackingOn50 · 01/07/2025 18:19

You're definitely wearing UK size clothes?

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 01/07/2025 18:21

The size 12 stuff is probably stretchy fabric. They are very forgiving.

SoScarletItWas · 01/07/2025 18:29

To answer your question, @ThisVividGreenEagle the seatbelt doesn’t need to be the full circumference of your waist (42”) because it sits across your lap.

Google/AI says this, which looks backed up by other forums:

Ryanair seatbelts are generally around 47 inches (120cm) long, which should accommodate a 42-inch waist. If a seatbelt extender is needed, they are available on board. A 42-inch waist size is within the typical range of what Ryanair seatbelts can accommodate, and extenders are available if needed.

If you are 17stone with a 42 inch waist there’s no way you’re a size 10-12. Your clothing must be stretched to within an inch of its life!

you sound more a size 20-22

whynotmereally · 01/07/2025 18:35

I’m 5.5 and 12 stone and in a size 14.

LightCameraBitchSmile · 01/07/2025 18:43

A 42inch waist is a size 22. Do you have a picture you could share (without your face if you prefer)?

Im 5”7 and have gone from 16 stone to 10.5 stone, taking me from a size 20/22 to a size 10/12

Fleurdalys · 01/07/2025 18:46

I’m 5ft 8, 12 stone and a size 14.
Are all your clothes made of Lycra?

Throwmoneyatit · 01/07/2025 18:51

What type of clothes do you usually wear?
Jeans, leggings, lounge pants? Tailored shirts, oversize hoodies, vest tops, t shirts? Have you got marks around bigger parts of your body (stomach, waist, hips) at the end of a day at work?
The type of clothes and where they were bought will matter hugely.
I'm currently in some primark pj shorts. They are a size 12 but they also fit last summer when I had put weight on and was a size 18.
Go into a good shop and try some jeans on that don't have a stretchy waist. It'll give you more of an idea.

Ijustwanttobehealthy · 01/07/2025 19:25

I'd be concerned about a large cyst or tumour. A friend of mine had a cyst the size of a football removed (it was really heavy), her GP just kept telling her to go on a diet 🙄

Do you have any digestive issues and bloating?

Go get checked out ASAP and don't be too polite to not ask for a second opinion. They really should be giving you an ultrasound at least.
