To feel a bit decadent buying cream?

It’s not that expensive but I always feel a bit fancy buying it….there’s probably other things that make me feel the same. Olives I think too…

Eh? What’s decadent about buying cream?

I detest cream so only buy it when other people are here. But decadent it is not.

amooseymoomum · 28/06/2025 14:24

I bought some cream today but also got strawberries. You cannot have one without the other!
some of the nice cheeses are very decadent; at Christmas I always have that gorgeous soft pineapple cheese but cannot justify it any other time

Snowdropsaremyfavourite · 28/06/2025 14:28

Enjoy it! Every few months I treat myself to cream and have it in my coffee.

RosesAndHellebores · 28/06/2025 14:28

I don't think cream's decadent. I think a beautiful chocolate torte or Raspberry tart from the wonderful French deli is a tiny bit decadent.

Iamtarticus · 28/06/2025 14:30

I feel the same about cream, growing up where tip-top was cream substitute 😂

CantThinkOfAUsername57 · 28/06/2025 14:31

How so? I agree that something like clotted cream is a treat but surely regular single/double is just a fairly standard ingredient? I use it all the time in cooking for pastas, sauces etc

Comedycook · 28/06/2025 14:32

Are you of an age where you remember rationing op?

SparrowFeet · 28/06/2025 14:33

I totally get what you mean. It's feels fancier than buying ice cream or custard to go with something.

Jars of artichokes as well for me. Or de cecco pasta.

TotHappy · 28/06/2025 14:38

Maybe it's from the phraseology - 'the cream of the crop', 'Creme de la creme'. It feels decadent because you're getting the best. Cream is the best.

Trumptonagain · 28/06/2025 14:47

I give it no thought, I much prefer homemade ice cream so buy cream regularly.

dudsville · 28/06/2025 14:52

I know what you mean op, I feel it too! Have you ever had it in coffee? It's so good, really special.

TheCurious0range · 28/06/2025 14:52

DS has been having strawberries and cream overnight oats for breakfast that feels decadent to me but I'm not sure why!
(Mashed banana, oats, spoon of almond butter, milk, chopped strawberries, layer of double cream on top in a kilner jar left in the fridge overnight) He's a skinny Minnie and it's a great way to get calories into him. Maybe I'm just jealous.....

WaxingGibbon · 28/06/2025 15:00

agree! It weirdly feels like a little luxury in a way other discretionary things that cost the same like a bar of chocolate don’t (well to me anyway)

Jellycatspyjamas · 28/06/2025 15:01

Coffee with a dash of double cream is my preferred morning coffee, probably because it does feel a bit of a treat, but an every day one for me. In peace and quiet before the rest of the house is awake, with the dog at my feet.

Mikart · 28/06/2025 15:12

I have cream at least twice a week and olives most days

BigDahliaFan · 28/06/2025 16:10

'agree! It weirdly feels like a little luxury in a way other discretionary things that cost the same like a bar of chocolate don’t (well to me anyway)'

Yes I buy it fairly regularly but yes it does feel a bit fancy. And cream on porridge in the morning, delicious...and I can feel the disapproval of my calvinist Scottish forbears.

Agreed op - l love it!

MissyPants · 28/06/2025 16:47

I had a weird experience the other day. I was by the tomatoes in the supermarket and a woman was looking for ages at the different cheaper priced ones, comparing. I popped a pack of aramatico ones in my trolley priced at £3. She then watched me put them in my trolley and followed my with her gaze as I walked away up the isle. Must have thought I had lots of money or something, I don't.
I don't scrimp on tomatoes tho. The 80p ones or whatever are tasteless.
I always feel fancy when I buy fresh salmon. I think it's a luxury!

YesButNoButMayybee · 28/06/2025 16:51

I have double cream in my coffee every morning; it's definitely an indulgence but it's a little luxury that I absolutely love.

BigDahliaFan · 28/06/2025 16:53

Yes posh tomatoes too. Life is hard enough with a tasteless tomato.

But I don't feel decadent buying them...

Cream isnt decadent,it’s an everyday essential for me .my milkman delivers it.
i get what you mean though, decadent for me is buying a box of chocolates for myself instead of a bar. It just feels like a box of chocolates is for very special occasions .

Sminty2 · 28/06/2025 17:55

I buy a new bath sponge every week, just an ordinary one but I can’t stand a used looking sponge, is that decadent and indulgent? Probably, but I love a fresh, clean bath sponge.

SoScarletItWas · 28/06/2025 17:57

I’ve just crumbled a meringue nest into my already-decadent raspberries and cream and I tell you all, I feel like Joan fucking Collins.

TourangaLeila · 28/06/2025 18:05

Ooh @BigDahliaFan you enjoy feeling decadent you fancy mofo! Doesn't matter what anyone else thinks.

I feel the same when I buy things that are perceived by me as a but fancy or naughty, such as.

A proper box of chocolates
Real butter
Double cream
Chocolate fudge cake
Brand name toiletries
Fresh Strawberries
Fresh Raspberries
Fancy tomatoes
Asparagus
Cheesecake or lemon torte
Scented candles
Things from John Lewis

This is because I am skint and it happens very infrequently.
