I have just picked my child up from a playdate and, on the way out, the mum gave both my kids a chupa chup. These fucking lollies. They're a huge choking hazard, they're impossible to open, and they're terrible for kids' teeth. I can't stand the bloody things. Currently perched on the sofa watching the kids eat them. I can't leave the room until I know the choking danger has passed. I am perhaps a touch neurotic.

I agree for the same reasons. They can easily slip off the stick. Kids walk around with them in their mouth. Nope!
I switch them out for other sweets if they end up being a Trick or Treat sweet.

Whyjustwhy83 · 27/06/2025 19:40

Agree hate my DC eating them

Motnight · 27/06/2025 19:41

How old are your kids?

Surroundedbyfools · 27/06/2025 19:43

Same. I’m not strict with sweets really but my 2 r just not allowed lollies end of story, no lollies ever. Choking hazards and so dangerous. I feel sick when I see kids running round the park with lollies. When I was a child a boy in my class fell with one in his mouth and it got shoved right thru his soft palette and he needed surgery !

Iloveeverycat · 27/06/2025 19:44

Never liked them but then I didn't like them eating large boiled sweets like werthers originals. Probably because I choked on a sweet like that when I was little and dad had to turn me upside down to get it out.

littleweedandherflowers · 27/06/2025 19:45

I refuse to let mine have these ! I’m shocked they are still allowed to sell them to be honest ! Xx

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 27/06/2025 19:47

I'm here to defend the chupa chup! They are lovely. No lolly like this is meant for little ones and they definitely shouldn't be walking around with them though.

notadrift · 27/06/2025 19:48

Spanish classic. Designed by Dali.

NuffSaidSam · 27/06/2025 19:48

I don't let kids eat these. I'll swap them for something else and they're happy with that.

notadrift · 27/06/2025 19:49

Its a lollipop.

TomatoSandwiches · 27/06/2025 19:50

I like the whistle lollies

ToKittyornottoKitty · 27/06/2025 19:51

RedRoss86 · 27/06/2025 19:53

I hate them cause they are impossible to ooppeeennnnn
And you have a kid staring you down while you can't manage to open it 🙃🙃

RandomMess · 27/06/2025 19:55

I banned lollies for all the risks and my DC are in their 20s now!

Lucillebatwings · 27/06/2025 19:55

When I was a wee girl a friend choked on one. It came right off the stick and blocked her airways. Thankfully they managed to dislodge it (I can’t remember exact details but remember her go away in an ambulance)

My children aren’t allowed them as a consequence. I’ve given in once and made them lick them which I think they found a hassle so they stopped asking.

They are now teens and tweens.

Canthelpmyselffromjoiningin · 27/06/2025 19:59

Totally agree. Feel like the fun police when my poor 5yo has spent ages bouncing with excitement about his lolly and I make him sit at rhe table and lick it. Not worth the risk, I don't understand why they haven't changed the shape

FrodisCapering · 27/06/2025 20:00

I just don't let the kids have them.
Total ban on sweets, lollipops, juice, raisins.
They are allowed chocolate and cake on special occasions, and ice cream on holiday.
They are 6.5 and 5. I won't be able to enforce this forever but it's working for now!

Wehavealaughdontwe · 27/06/2025 20:00

I say this all the time! I don't understand how they haven't been banned when they're such an obvious choking risk

JLou08 · 27/06/2025 20:03

Dependant on the age of the child I wouldn't say you're neurotic. They are a choking hazard. If your child is still too young to have whole grapes then they're too young for round lollies.

Abitlosttoday · 27/06/2025 20:12

Motnight · 27/06/2025 19:41

How old are your kids?

They're 8 and 5. They're both very small though, if that makes a difference! Petite. So, smaller airways, maybe. In my mind.

@FrodisCapering what's up with the raisin ban? I mean I hate them anyway but just interested.

Lids love then though. The days of my dc choosing which one in the chemist/post office from the big plastic lolly evokes hapoy memories. And they were really cheap.

Guavafish1 · 27/06/2025 20:15

I loved them as a kid and happy give to my kids as an occasional treat

notanothersummercold · 27/06/2025 20:16

Have them with a passion - not just chuba chops either!
My dh said his dentist used to give him one when he had been - can you imagine?!

modgepodge · 27/06/2025 20:19

WHY are they so hard to open? I hate them for that reason alone. There’s another similar type which have a twist at the top, just untwist and eat, fine. Chuppa chups are so difficult. Why hasn’t the company cottoned on to this and changed them?!
