Dh and Dd getting things out of the bin

I find it embarrassing

We live in a v wealthy area, many of the houses nearby are rented out to holiday makers (tourist place)
Dh and dd often take the rubbish to the bins
Different to the uk, you take your bags to huge bins at the end of the road and bin men collect it all at night
Dh and Dd have just come back excitedly with a huge beach umbrella, brand new, still wrapped up, admittedly we do need one and I was about to get this weekend, so it comes in handy, but still feel a bit embarrassed.
They’ve come back with garden chairs before, a boogie board (brand new) etc

Would you be embarrassed or chuffed?

A bit of both tbh. Glad they were finding stuff but slightly embarrassed that it was found by the bins 😳

ninjahamster · 23/06/2025 20:16

I’d be thrilled and it’s saving it from going to landfill!

JamesWebbSpaceTelescope · 23/06/2025 20:16

Pleased that something isn’t going unnecessarily to landfill but will be used. I’m presuming these were placed next to the bins rather than they went dumpster diving.

Dangermoo · 23/06/2025 20:16

😆 🤣 bless you. I think it's funny.

CamberwellCarrot78 · 23/06/2025 20:16

Personally I’d be well pleased if I found new stuff in a bin! I mean if they’re climbing in and sifting through loads of bags then, yes you have a point but if those things have just been pulled out then win win I say! (But personally I love a good old rummage through a skip so I’m probs not the best person to comment 😂).

Tereseta · 23/06/2025 20:17

Tbh it is recycling, I would feel more embarrassed to be the person buying big things like umbrellas and chairs for single use to discard. Good on your DH and DD!

MessageMystery · 23/06/2025 20:18

Someone dumped a telly outside my workplace, I was mortified when my dh and ds stopped to pick it up 🫣 It did still work tho 😂

Brand new?
I'd be chuffed good stuff wasn't going to waste.

Dontlletmedownbruce · 23/06/2025 20:21

I don't think its anything to do with wealth, I absolutely hate waste so I would be delighted something got a second use.

LaurieFairyCake · 23/06/2025 20:22

I also HATE waste, I’d be delighted. I buy as much as I can second hand.

reduce, reuse, recycle. Or we have climate death 🤷‍♀️ that’s the bottom line

Iloveacurry · 23/06/2025 20:22

They’re doing the landfill a favour! Good for them.

Absentmindedsmile · 23/06/2025 20:23

As long as they’re not bringing half eaten pizza home, it’s conscientious recycling! ♻️

AcquadiP · 23/06/2025 20:24

Brand new and in its original packaging, I wouldn't have a problem. It would only go in landfill.

TheAutumnCrow · 23/06/2025 20:24

Are they coming home soaked and covered in rotting food juice and peelings?

I might draw the line at that.

Neednewglassesplease · 23/06/2025 20:24

Yes by the bin, not in it 😂
Just embarrassed as my Dd loves going to the bins now and looks around it for things 🙈

Maybe this stuff is being put near the bins because they're hoping people will take it?

They ate the pizza sat on the garden chairs under the umbrella before they went back to OP 🤣😂😁

Hotflushesandchilblains · 23/06/2025 20:25

I once lived overseas where there was a tradition at a certain time of year for people to replace a lot of home goods and furniture. You could get some amazing stuff. I once found a massive and perfectly functioning TV - we used it for years and I was the toast of the ex-pat community as the best thing anyone had ever got from the trash.

ohyesido · 23/06/2025 20:28

At least it’s not a pee stained mattress or half eaten pizza

socks1107 · 23/06/2025 20:28

I’d be chuffed! Saves it going to landfill and your getting it for free.
teaches your dd that not everything has to be new

ClareBlue · 23/06/2025 20:29

What's not to like. You get freebies, saves on transportation and disposal or recycle, save on another having to be made. It's win win. If it's a status issue about taking things others have thrown away then in my experience this is exactly how properly rich people behaviour. They hate waste and recycle things all the time and have no embarrassment at all. Showy and pretend rich people are the only ones who would judge this. In Germany you leave all reusable things on the street before waste collection, so others can take them if they need them. We should do that.

Absentmindedsmile · 23/06/2025 20:29

Chickenhorse · 23/06/2025 20:25

And that was just the main course. The starter was an unidentifiable mashed mush wrapped in tin foil, but apparently it tasted Fine 😂

Neednewglassesplease · 23/06/2025 20:29

A lot of holiday makers seem to leave things as they obviously can’t take it back on the plane, it’s just the way Dd seems to find it exciting now 🙈My mum was mortified 😅

I found a Kofod Larsen Penguin chair by the dumpster. Score.

It's pretty much expected that people will trash dive here.
