To use a spoon to butter bread?

Spoonspreader · 23/06/2025 06:53

I don’t have a butter knife and a few weeks ago I didn’t have a clean normal knife either so I used a spoon to butter my bread and it was a revelation.
Now the back of the spoon is my go to method-I get better coverage and no ripping of the bread.
I made some toast at work the other day and colleagues looked at me as I was weird. I tried to explain the advantages so maybe they will try it for themselves in the privacy of their homes and be converted.
But I thought I’d share on here and hopefully improve people’s packed lunch making experience.

I often use a spoon, like you say, much better than a knife

You’re not wrong. A spoon is brilliant for buttering sandwiches on a large scale.

I used to work in a sandwich bar and when we had party platters to prepare we used spoons every time.

RentalWoesNotFun · 23/06/2025 06:58

Ive done that for years. As did a friend. We found out by accident about each other’s “little secret”.

TigerRag · 23/06/2025 07:41

I do this with pineapple jam as I'm visually impaired and it's a pain due to the colour to spread. Mum suggested a spoon and it's so much easier

Spoonspreader · 23/06/2025 07:42

Why isn’t it more commonly known?! Or is it just me that didn’t know it?

I will give this a try!

HoratioBellsOn · 23/06/2025 07:44

I've always buttered with a spoon, so much better.

Sunshineandrainbow · 23/06/2025 07:45

I have seen it on social media, looks better but I forget to try it.

SmegFridge · 23/06/2025 07:45

I always use a spoon. 😄

Malvala · 23/06/2025 07:46

A heated spoon is even better. I can only eat real butter because sees oils make me ill I avoid any spread that has them.

I love my butter cold so a heated spoon makes it much easier to spread.

Laiste · 23/06/2025 07:49

I've done it when a knife isn't to hand and yes it's perfectly good!

Conversely i've used a spoon to cut a birthday cake ... it worked ok. Squishy chocolate cake. But that was because no one could be bothered to get up and get the knife not because it was better 🤣

Mummmyof1 · 23/06/2025 08:32

I always use a spoon to butter bread. My son is learning that this is the way to do it too...much to the annoyance of his other parent.

Parrotdrill · 23/06/2025 08:44

Go for it! Anything that makes life easier is valid!!!

My friend revolutionised my life when they taught me to cut pizza slices with kitchen scissors! So much easier than a knife or pizza cutter .

I blame the butter knife industry - it's That One Trick they don't want you to know about.

I didn't know about it but as soon as I read your OP I could tell it would be lifechanging.

PlasticAcrobat · 23/06/2025 08:54

... and I see that you have adopted a new username for this thread, @Spoonspreader , presumably to make it harder for Big Butter Knife to identify you and silence you (with one of its rather blunt blades).

Trumptonagain · 23/06/2025 11:44

I find the underside roundness of a teaspoon makes the butter spread much better than when using a flat knife.

MasterBeth · 23/06/2025 11:45

This thread is mental.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 23/06/2025 11:47

Yep, much better tool for the job. We always used a spoon in all the commercial kitchens I've worked in.

Particularly for crusty baguette type bread, if you're buttering lengthwise. One swipe and it's done!

NeedthatFridayfeeling · 23/06/2025 11:47

Teaspoon or big spoon? feel like i need to try this, so scrape butter off with spoon then use the underside to spread it?

Anzena · 23/06/2025 11:52

You could also use a spatula if you can't find a clean spoon lol . Great coverage if using softened butter or mayo and have LOADS of sandwiches to make. One scoop per slice and done. No rips of the soft bread.

Are you Alanis Morissette?

murasaki · 23/06/2025 11:58

How have I never heard of this? I shall experiment at lunch time.

Scissors are great for so much food preparation and as you say pizzas etc.

SleepingisanArt · 23/06/2025 12:24

Another person here who worked in a sandwich place (many many years ago) and spoons were used for buttering. Use a spoon to spread most things because of it....

MagicalMystical · 23/06/2025 12:26

I’m another scissors pizza cutter. Had not heard of the spoon trick but may have to have a sandwich for lunch today to try it out….
