To put the air con on?

Penguins3 · 17/06/2025 18:16

If you have air con, what temp do you turn it on?

I have 2 portable air con units and have just put them on. It’s 27oc here, but I feel like I’ve caved too early. It’s the relentlessness of it over multiple days. I’m just hoping to take the edge off the heat for the evening. But now they’re inside I know they’ll be on each evening for any temp above this. I don’t know, should I be holding out for +30oc temps?

Good grief ! Why have it if you don't use it ?!!!

ShesTheAlbatross · 17/06/2025 18:19

I’m not sure the outside temp is that relevant because different houses and rooms heat up differently.
We used to have a bedroom that was bang on south facing, with a 3m wide window that was very tall as well. It was unbearable in the summer as it was like a greenhouse in there. But the rooms on the other side of the house were a lovely temp.

So, if you were uncomfortable, then isn’t that what you got AC for?

Poopeepoopee · 17/06/2025 18:21

I like to keep my house at a constant 22 degrees but it's up to you. Buy AC and don't turn it on if you want - it's up to you.

UpUpUpU · 17/06/2025 18:21

Are they very expensive to run? Is that why you are worried? If not, crack it on to a temp you are comfortable at?

greengreyblue · 17/06/2025 18:23

Well I’ve had my bedroom fan on for last few days .

Edenmum2 · 17/06/2025 18:23

Mine would be on at 23+ prob. I wish I had one, it would stop me dreading summer every year

Because I feel guilty for our planet, for the neighbours having to listen to the hum. I feel like I should ‘hold out’. My Dh thinks I’m ridiculous.

We have been using ours as we live in a new build house that gets so warm at night and our dog hates it. If it’s over 22 degrees outside it’s unbearable in our bedroom

Orangemintcream · 17/06/2025 18:24

I put it on when I am too hot.

Much like the heating when I am too cold.

Its really not a huge dilemma.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 17/06/2025 18:28

Exactly what @Orangemintcream says.
I like my living room at 23 in the winter, happy for it to be less in summer.
If I had air con it would be on.

Also in a new build and the heat that they trap is unbearable. DD’s room thermometer was reading 26c at 9pm last night.

I’ve got 2 running currently, I don’t feel guilty just like I don’t feel guilty about putting the heating on when it gets chilly. If it’s uncomfortably warm in your house, use them otherwise what’s the point in having them.

Waitingforaprick · 17/06/2025 18:38

I have professionally installed fixed a/c in 3 rooms. They've been on for weeks, a bit different though as they're inverters and ramp up and down to keep temperature stable so cost far less to run and almost silent. 1 on 20c, one at 19c. One on only at night around 18c. I find you need to get ahead of the heat before the house heats up or they have to work even harder. If it's hot, use it!

ButteredRadish · 17/06/2025 18:44

Why are you asking our permission????

UpUpUpU · 17/06/2025 18:46

Sounds like a stealth brag to me!

Oatshakenespresso · 17/06/2025 18:48

We have our aircon on every day (we’re in a relatively new build) and it’s always unbearably hot. We have never had to have the heating on since we moved 2 years ago

Penguins3 · 17/06/2025 18:53

I just wanted to know if anyone else had put theirs on? I do get that not everyone can have one, but at the same time I don’t think small portable air con units are massively unattainable.

I haven't bothered yet, I haven't even put the fan on, it's 23-24 in the house and was 27 outside so it feels quite nice inside at the moment. I will probably put it on at the weekend when it hots up a bit, but it is quite noisy

Wolmando · 17/06/2025 18:58

Portable air con are about £300, sometimes less so not really something one brags about, they cost about the same to run as a portable oil filled radiator.

ButteredRadish · 17/06/2025 18:44

I think because with heating, you’re brought up with it in the UK so I know when to turn it on. But I just don’t know what to do with air con, it’s new to me as an adult. Do you know what I mean? I know I’m probably over complicating the whole thing!

Shitmonger · 17/06/2025 19:06

I have mine set to come on when it reaches 23.5° and then at night it brings it down to 20° so we can sleep. Currently the outdoor reading is sitting steady at 34° and it hasn’t run yet today, though I imagine it will kick on any minute now.

wizzywig · 17/06/2025 19:07

Turned mine on last night.

Wolmando · 17/06/2025 19:11

I think it depends on what your heat comfort level is, mine is quite warm, I only stopped using my electric blanket about a week or so ago. So if you are a bit warm I would put it on. I'm on my own this week but if DH was here he would probably want it on .

caramac04 · 17/06/2025 19:23

I would definitely use it. I have a caravan on the coast but it has been very uncomfortable the last few days. I’m now home and not planning to go again until it’s cooler as I need to walk the dog early and then stay in all day so I can have door open to keep me and dog just below melting point.
I’m going to look at a small ac unit.

Isobel201 · 17/06/2025 19:26

it hasn't been hot enough year upon year for me to consider air con for the house. Yes there was a heatwave in 2022, but then the last three years have seen cooler summers. I'm in West Yorkshire, and so far this year, we haven't had humid heat, only nice sunny days over the last 4 days anyway.
