To put the air con on?

If you have air con, what temp do you turn it on?

I have 2 portable air con units and have just put them on. It’s 27oc here, but I feel like I’ve caved too early. It’s the relentlessness of it over multiple days. I’m just hoping to take the edge off the heat for the evening. But now they’re inside I know they’ll be on each evening for any temp above this. I don’t know, should I be holding out for +30oc temps?

just put it on

i dont have AC, except at work, when it is on A LOT
not my choice
but i have a fan going at night.

babasaclover · 17/06/2025 19:57

I’ve had ours on since April. We are in a loft conversion so it’s been hot since then.

I can see on our smart meter that to have ours and my daughters on all night at 21 degrees it’s costing around 10p per night.

why on earth would you feel guilty? It’s not the dark ages, no point suffering when there is a way around it. Fucked if I’m being cold or hot when I can control it.

I would definitely use it. I have a caravan on the coast but it has been very uncomfortable the last few days. I’m now home and not planning to go again until it’s cooler as I need to walk the dog early and then stay in all day so I can have door open to keep me and dog just below melting point.
I’m going to look at a small ac unit.

Check out Costco website. Don’t need to even be a member to have it fitted - proper split level like you get in offices. Absolutely game changer

Titsywoo · 17/06/2025 20:56

We have an air con unit installed in our bedroom - we have used it for the last few days set at 20 degrees overnight.

InterestQ · 17/06/2025 21:02

I have had it on every night, all night for weeks. I wouldn’t be able to sleep otherwise. It was fitted a few years ago and is the most important thing for me not to dread summer.

Our bedroom is top floor, poor insulation (and can’t change this) and I used to have to freeze wet towels, have 2 fans behind iced water, frozen hot water bottles blah blah.

smilingthroughgrittedteeth · 17/06/2025 21:02

We have portable air con units in each bedroom. Kids are all running to keep them comfortable. We haven't set ours up yet but its not to bad in our room at the moment and the fan is keeping the temperature down, once the fan stops being effective the air con will go on.

whirlyhead · 18/06/2025 08:39

I live in Spain and it’s late 30s here. I have air con but never use it - we have ceiling fans that are much cheaper to run, plus that way I can have windows and doors open. Most people here don’t use aircon as you acclimatise to life without it. I bloody hate how aircon dries the air out so never use it if I can help it.

AirborneElephant · 18/06/2025 08:51

We had a heat pump system installed a few years ago, so very efficient. We have ours on in the bedroom if it’s over 20 inside at night, and elsewhere whenever we’re uncomfortably warm, generally over 24. Likely to all be on today as we’re both WFH.

Because I feel guilty for our planet, for the neighbours having to listen to the hum. I feel like I should ‘hold out’. My Dh thinks I’m ridiculous.

I'm with you OP. Aircon is not environmentally friendly at all. And costs to run.

Do you make sure you open the windows early, then make sure the curtains are shut as the sun moves round the house? It shouldn't be as hot in the house as outside if you do this

CommissarySushi · 18/06/2025 08:54

We have ours set at 17 overnight. It doesn't actually cool the room to 17 though, just makes it comfortable. Otherwise it's about 26 degrees in our bedrooms at night.

UpUpUpU · 17/06/2025 18:21

Are they very expensive to run? Is that why you are worried? If not, crack it on to a temp you are comfortable at?

This was my worry but we have one in our bedroom and it’s maybe at a push a couple extra pounds a day. I don’t know about the portable ones though….

Wolmando · 18/06/2025 09:37

Our portable air con uses around 800-1000w so it's similar to using one of those 1kw portable radiators.

Nothing fun or which makes your life easier is environmentally friendly allegedly.

bet you drive a car though cause it’s easier and we’d never get anywhere if we walked everywhere.

we need to use the technology we have to make lives better otherwise we may as well all be cavemen 🤷‍♀️

I use a car but it is electric and I also walk, bus, tram and cycle as much as possible.
I turn on the heating but only after trying to warm the house with sunlight and wearing warm layers.
I eat meat but only occasionally.
I use plastic bags but use them again.and again.
I wear clothes but almost 90% of them are second hand and I then give them away.
I use electricity but have solar panels
I had children but teach them to be as environmentally friendly as possible.
It's about reducing the pain on the planet as best we can but still living a decent life.

NHSinterviewupcoming · 19/06/2025 22:01

If I had air con it would be on 24/7 from about mid-March.

im that annoying person who turns it on as low as possible on holiday and keeps it on the entire time

Nothing annoying about that. Just sensible that’s how it should be used rather than blasted to freezing then turned off! Constant temperature is best

I like your answers. I too do all of the above. How good are electric cars though, seriously it has changed my life and I only need to charge it once a week!!! I’m never going back. One of the best function I’m using right now is turning on the air con from the app to pre cool the car, did the reverse in winter to deice it. As you can tell I don’t like being too hot or too cold 😂 I actually think I have a problem temperature regulating.

don’t agree about the cold and heat though. Think we should use what we have to be comfortable. Agree to disagree?
