What is wrong with Granny?

Jane958 · 14/06/2025 20:05

Both my grannies were Granny.
My mother was Granny.
My sister has chosen Nana, why?
Is this an indication of how far we are plummeting towards the bottom?

I hate Nana, it sounds common.

I had a wonderful granny , small precious with salt and pepper hair, had a million wrinkles. The perfect image of a precious old lady. My absolute queen. I also had a very glam Nana , hair and nails always done, my mum wanted Nana without question. She loves the title. The other one is just called the wicked old bat. Cause She doesn’t deserve any title.

That's it. Granny/grandma conjurs up an image of a silver haired elderly lady with a pull along shopping bag, knitting, a Womans Weekly, and a crimplene skirt and a polo neck, who watches black and white films from the 1940s on Talking Pictures...

Nan/nana/nanny conjurs up an image of a more middle aged woman with blonde or brown-ish hair, with a denim jacket, 3 piercings in her ears, jeans, a Nirvana T-shirt, and who goes to rock concerts, Pride festivals, and watches psychological thrillers on Netflix and channel 5.

My mother refused any of them and is referred to by her first name by her GC

ThatGladFox · 14/06/2025 21:09

Just be thankful it’s not “Lala” which my mil has chosen for the grandchildren to call her 🫤

chocolatelover91 · 14/06/2025 21:09

My husband's step mother turned 60 last year. When my DD was born she said she didn't want to be referred to as grandma cos she isn't old enough to be one apparently? So she named herself granna! 🙄 Ironically she doesn't bother with DD, which suits me down to the ground 🤣

What a snotty post 🙄 I had a wonderful Nana. My aunty is now Nana to her grandson. Calling someone Nana is not 'plummeting towards the bottom', don't be so mean.

Yeah this. ^ And how fascinating that the OP has posted the very goady and derisory original post and then not come back. Enjoying your work @Jane958 ???

chocolatelover91 · 14/06/2025 21:10

I'm Welsh also, and my mum is 'mamgu' to DD 🥹

My husband's late mother would have been called 'nain', also Welsh ❤️

emmetgirl · 14/06/2025 21:10

I’m a granny!

Pronounced Fanshaw? Of the family who owned Uppark?

Yes, my mother’s maiden name.

Whataninterestinglookingpotato · 14/06/2025 21:11

I want to be called Nan if and when I get grandkids. That because the grandparent who I was closest to growing up was my Nan and it just feels like a safe warm name to me.

my dds called my MIL granny. I let all the grandparents choose what they wanted to be called and that’s what’s he chose. I call her granny too now. It suits her.

Granna sounds a bit odd! Never heard that before.

Cnidarian · 14/06/2025 21:13

Not the depths of the abyss that is Nana, or heaven forbid Nanny?! Surely not! The horror of it! However can we tolerate plunging so far, it's deeper than the Marianas trench out here

Loub1987 · 14/06/2025 21:13

Does it matter, also I agree with pp that the first grandchild leads. My niece has a French father so my kids have a Papi not a grandad. He could not care less. Just loves his grandkids.

CrazyHormoneLady · 14/06/2025 21:13

I've never heard the notion that Nana is common?! My mum chose to be Nana because she was brought up by her Irish grandmother who to her was Nana and she has fond memories of her. My ex's mum chose to be Granny (which surprised me as I also associated it with "old and frail", but she's very robust and has a youthful character).

Yes. She's odd too mind 🤣🤣

namechangetheworld · 14/06/2025 21:13

Our children have 2 Grannies!

I find Grandma too formal and I'm really not keen on Nana for some reason.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 14/06/2025 21:14

I had two Nanas. But one Grandad and one Grandpa. So to discern which Nana between which Nana we were talking about we'd say 'Nana Grandpa' or 'Nana Grandad'.

My dc had a Nana (my side) and a Grandma on DH's side - his choice. His brothers families both called her Nana and only out kids called her Grandma.

PlasticAcrobat · 14/06/2025 21:14

I'm Team Nana.

I had a Granny and a Nana. Both were lovely, but Nana was just that little bit lovelier. Rustic and roguish. She had a poodle and a budgie that could talk and she said bugger a lot.

If I'm lucky enough to have grandchildren I will be hoping to be a Nana but will take whatever word sticks.

Every time I see a Nana-bashing thread on MN (and they are pretty frequent) I wonder why people are so set against the word.

Nanny to me is a job. I worked as a nanny for several years. I want to be Grandma.
