What is wrong with Granny?

Jane958 · 14/06/2025 20:05

Both my grannies were Granny.
My mother was Granny.
My sister has chosen Nana, why?
Is this an indication of how far we are plummeting towards the bottom?

Another one not sure of why being a nana is a bad thing??

Puddlewoman · 14/06/2025 20:43

I had a nanny on my mothers side and a grandma we were encouraged not to like. My dc have one nana all others were dead long ago so no double name issues here. I couldnt be a granny theres something crone like about the word. It gives tight grey perm and itchy woolen skirt vibes

Mine was Grandmother Featherstonehaugh.

Nana is lovely.

Pronounced Fanshaw? Of the family who owned Uppark?

Supporthelittleguys · 14/06/2025 20:45

Im working class and all the grandparents are nan/grandad. I always saw grandma/grandpa as a middle class thing, usually because grandparents tend to be older. No idea 🤷🏼‍♀️ maybe that’s why she prefers nana, imo nan sounds like a young grandparent and grandma more like the nans mum! So a great grandparent…

I think there's a vague tradition of "nana" being a working class marker (although PP have already suggested it isn't as tidy as that and it may have been more strongly in operation a few decades ago). I do know my very proper schoolteacher grandmother would have probably disowned me and my sister if we'd dared address her as "nana" rather than "granny."
But of course both Granny Weatherwax and Nanny Ogg are seriously wondrous ladies.

Fiver555 · 14/06/2025 20:47

When we suggested to my mother that she be called Nanny, she said she wasn't a goat.🙄So Granny it is.

Zanatdy · 14/06/2025 20:47

You choose what you prefer, why is one lower class than another? Get a grip.

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 14/06/2025 20:48

My mum was "grandma" and so was her mum. I probably will be too. My dad's mum was also "grandma" to me. Dh's mum was a known as a name for grandma from her own culture.

I think people should use whatever name they like. It's just a name. Who gives a toss if "nana" is associated with working class families...I am sure that working class people love their grannies as much as anyone else!

BIossomtoes · 14/06/2025 20:49

I’m Granny, just like my mum and her mum. I love it.

fudgesmummy · 14/06/2025 20:49

I’m Granny to our 3 lovely grandchildren.
Our 2 grandsons don’t have grandparents on their daddy’s side.
Our granddaughter has a Nana as well ❤️
I’m Granny after the Dowager Countess of Grantham in Downton Abbey 😃

Viviennemary · 14/06/2025 20:49

I think nana is frightfully common. Granny or Grandma.

Thepeopleversuswork · 14/06/2025 20:49

Why on earth is "Nana" a race to the bottom? Is this is a snob factor thing?

Thepeopleversuswork · 14/06/2025 20:51

Viviennemary · 14/06/2025 20:49

😆

OK Hyacinth.

honeylulu · 14/06/2025 20:51

It's up to the grandmother what she prefers. I hate to say it but I think it's at least partly classist.

Grandmother/Grandmama - posh
Granny - fairly posh
Grandma - average
Nana/Nan/Nanny (unless the employee kind) - working class

We called both grandmothers Grandma. My mum (snobby but not properly posh) originally wanted the same but when she found out MIL was Granny she decided she wanted to be called Granny too.

MyIvyGrows · 14/06/2025 20:51

Mine were both Nana Surname but we all lived in the same town and I saw them frequently. My mum is just Nana to DS but he sees her a lot more than DH’s mum, who is Nana Surname.

Both Grandma and Granny sound terribly posh to me but I’m northern so

LetsGoGiants · 14/06/2025 20:52

Grandparents/Great grandparents on Dads side were Nanny/Grandad

On Mums side it was Granny/Grandpa

So it was easy for us to differentiate, but no idea if that was intentional or not.

My Granny always said she didn’t want to be a Nanny because she wasn’t a goat 😂

hazelowens · 14/06/2025 20:53

I had 2 Granny's one was Granny Anderson the other was granny French. My boys had a granny and a Nana I hate the word Nana but she had older grandkids who called her Nana so I grinned and bared it.

HarLace1 · 14/06/2025 20:55

I'm 35 and I have a granny and my lovely nanny died last year. My children have a granny (OH mum) and my mum is nanny. We asked them both when I was pregnant with our first what they wanted to be called, so I find it odd your sister is requesting baby calls your mum that, surely it's up to your mum lol

**Edited because I read your post wrong, I don't see any issue whatsoever with your sister wanting to be called nana.

xPenelopePitstop · 14/06/2025 20:56

My sister has chosen Nana, why?

Because she wants to.

You’ll live a much happier and easier life if you don’t care about these things.

Fairnair · 14/06/2025 20:56

I called my Dad’s Mum Grandma, and my Mum’s Mum Nan to help distinguish between the two. Called my Dad’s and Mum’s Dad both Granddad though 🤷‍♀️ My niece calls my Mum Nan and her Mum’s Mum Nana. Think Grandma sounds “older” than Nan/Nana/Nanny for some reason. Don’t think I would have minded what I was called if I had had Grandchildren.

BatchCookBabe · 14/06/2025 20:57

mnahmnah · 14/06/2025 20:35

Yes.

My DM has always said that Nana is ‘common’. She is Grandma.

How embarrassing.

Viviennemary · 14/06/2025 20:49

You sound frightfully nauseating.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 14/06/2025 20:58

I’m a granny, and so is the other granny.

I don’t like ‘grandma’, though - to me it sounds even older and fatter!

And I’d never have wanted to be Nan or Nana. When very little and still unable to pronounce a G the Gdcs called me Nanny, though, which coming from them was very sweet.

BatchCookBabe · 14/06/2025 20:58

Rubbish. My working class (35 y.o.) neighbour is from Liverpool and she calls her grandmother granny.

ToffeePennie · 14/06/2025 20:59

Nope! Granny is so incredibly old fashioned and screams fuddy duddy.
I’m going to be Nannie Pennie (as an example) like my mum who is Nannie First Name.
I had a Nanny and Grandad Smoke (example) because he smoked and a Nanny and Grandad Camping, because they took me camping, a Nanny Surname and a Nanny Conservatory (because it was a massive feature of her house)
My husband had Granny and Nanna.
In our family my husbands mother was determined to be Granny and so she is, and Grandad First Name.
My parents are Nanny First Name and Grandad Nickname, plus Nanny and Grandad Smoke are now Nanny and Grandad Trouble because my oldest once wrote a piece for school called “The biggest Trouble” which featured his great grandad quite heavily.
We don’t have “Nan” and despite me being 36 I still say “Nanny Smoke” and “Nanny Camping” when chatting to the family, as the oldest child I chose their names and they stuck.
