Is going for a coffee alone strange?

I’m sat with a nice coffee right now watching the world go by. When I told DH as I was heading out what my plans were, he looked at me as if I had gone mad! Anyone else enjoy a solo coffee occasionally or do you find the idea strange too?

Your DH is very odd. Does he never do anything alone?

Lmnop22 · 12/06/2025 14:47

Oh I hope this isn’t strange because I do this a lot! Drinking coffee alone with a book is one of my go to weekend plans 😂

JustAnInchident · 12/06/2025 14:47

Sounds absolutely lovely, I’m very jealous. I too went for coffee and cake this morning. Alas I had a three year old and a three month old in tow and it was, frankly, chaos 🤣 lovely in its own way, but not overly relaxing!

PeckyGoose · 12/06/2025 14:48

If it's weird, them I'm weird too. Weird solidarity 🤜🤛

I love going for a coffee with a book. My reading is much more efficient when I'm out the house!

HiRen · 12/06/2025 14:48

Erm, no? I do it often. It's bliss.

Although these days I make my own coffee and take it on a walk, or to sit by the river.

Therapee · 12/06/2025 14:48

No <gavel>

WhistleBlower8 · 12/06/2025 14:48

I regularly go to coffee shops and just sit watching the world. Completely normal thing to do. Your DH is odd.

HappilyDivorced89 · 12/06/2025 14:48

I'll often do this if I'm on annual leave and have time to kill before picking up DD from nursery!

Nothing strange about it at all...I think many people aspire to this actually!

Iwontlethtesungodownonme · 12/06/2025 14:49

One of my favourite things to do.

IDontLikePinaColadas · 12/06/2025 14:49

I dread to think of what he would make of my love of dining and going to the theatre on my own…

KickHimInTheCrotch · 12/06/2025 14:49

I'll do anything on my own - coffee, dinner, cinema, pub. I find people who aren't OK in their own company strange.

LonelyNight2 · 12/06/2025 14:49

Thanks all, I might show DH these replies!

People who think this is strange tend to be uneducated and to not like themselves very much.

InfoSecInTheCity · 12/06/2025 14:50

I do it everyday, my half hour at Costa in the morning between school drop off and starting work keeps me sane. It’s half hour to read my book or people watch while listening to my music and just taking time alone.

FinallyHere · 12/06/2025 14:50

It’s pretty weird to entertain for one minute that anyone who is alone and wants a coffee (or even just a break or lift) would need to find a friend in order to score a coffee. The most casual glance will show that lots of people are rightly ignoring what ex ver memo your DH has read. Simples

mynameiscalypso · 12/06/2025 14:51

Not at all. I probably find myself solo in a coffee shop once or twice a week (and I’m not even a coffee drinker). I’d say at least half of the people I see in coffee shops are solo, killing time.

purplecorkheart · 12/06/2025 14:51

He would think I am a total oddball. I go for coffee on my own often. I also go to restaurants on my own quite happily.

Viviennemary · 12/06/2025 14:51

I usually would prefer to go with a friend. But sometimes it is nice to be alone

daffodilsandaisies · 12/06/2025 14:51

No, not weird, but has started to feel very self indulgent as prices have spiralled! So I do tend only to do it as a social thing

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 12/06/2025 14:52

Jesus, it's not odd in the slightest! It's a lovely thing to do. I go in pubs on my own too, I'm a very modern woman.

Sherararara · 12/06/2025 14:53

I would never purposefully “just” go out for a coffee on my own - I’d do it as part of a shopping trip or if I had a reason like I needed to clear my head or do some work in couldn’t do in the house. But wouldn’t go out with the sole intention of sitting and watching the world go by - even though I do enjoy that as part of the above mentioned activities.

ilovesooty · 12/06/2025 14:53

It's your husband who's strange.

Trumptonagain · 12/06/2025 14:53

It's lovely to have half an hour or so to yourself, I sometimes do this on a Monday after a hectic weekend.

Getting out, people watching, just being in the moment, having time to finish a coffee without any distractions to me is bliss.

PiggieWig · 12/06/2025 14:53

Nothing strange about it at all. I’m more likely to grab a coffee when I’m already out than go out specifically, but I don’t see any reason why not.

Iwontlethtesungodownonme · 12/06/2025 14:49

One of my favourite things to do.

Same here. There is a lovely coffee house near my hairdresser's. I often stop there after my appointment for coffee and a croissant. They have outdoor seating when the weather is nice, and I sip and watch the world go by.
