Is going for a coffee alone strange?

I’m sat with a nice coffee right now watching the world go by. When I told DH as I was heading out what my plans were, he looked at me as if I had gone mad! Anyone else enjoy a solo coffee occasionally or do you find the idea strange too?

When you have small children we class that as a Holiday. I look forward to such holidays every 10days i get to leave alone for 3 hours and I have a coffee and breakfast at my local cafe and just enjoy the peace and even stroll by some nice shops and go in without little monkeys. 😂

This 100%

Quite sad that anyone would think being in your own company is 'weird'. I do sometimes pop out for a nice coffee and drink it on my own as well, without any other add on activity.

Slightly off topic but I once had a hobby which involved dressing up and doing slightly silly things in public, anyone who took the piss was inevitably a massive boorish, boring wanker (I'm looking at you BIL)

Yes, quite. I don't do it myself, but I have friends into larping, and other friends into medieval re-enacting, so I often see people dressed up and I don't bat an eyelid.

Other people do occasionally, and they are always the most boring people with absolutely nothing interesting to say, ever.

What on earth is 'odd' about going out specifically to go for coffee? Hmm

JabbaTheBeachHut · 12/06/2025 17:38

Does your DP also think blinking is strange?

How does he feel about breathing?

Very odd.

Frazzled2108 · 12/06/2025 17:40

Absolutely not. I love it! I go for a solo coffee most days.

MikeRafone · 12/06/2025 17:40

perhaps your dh should look around when he is out and see there are many people eating and drinking alone in cafes and restaurants

I think it’s odd because I work full time and if I had an hour or so to myself I’d either go on a nice walk, run or cycle or get some jobs done around the house that you never have time to do but irritate you immensely. Like fixing a loo seat, or cleaning the air fryer, or buying a new toaster. That sort of thing.

The luxury of time to waste seems incredible.

It's not a 'waste' of time to sit with a nice coffee and read, or think, or stare out of the window. It's valuable, especially when someone has a busy life.
Your post sounds quite judgemental; it's not the case that unless you're doing something practical you're 'wasting' time.

10 years ago I’d have never considered going to a cafe alone for fear of what people would think.

Now I realise that nobody gives a shit and it’s a bloody lovely bit of time to enjoy some peace and watch the world go by. I actually really want to go to a cafe now.

I love to people watch, and so many other people also go alone to cafes. I have seen a lady sit there making cards, a man doing a puzzle book. Most people on their own just sit on their phone and enjoy some them time.... or they might have a laptop and be working.
My DP WFH in cafes a lot, so is also alone.

OldMcDonaldHadABigMac · 12/06/2025 17:56

I go for a coffee a couple of times a week on my own! Nothing better than finishing work and nipping in for a coffee before picking my DC up.

No3392 · 12/06/2025 17:58

I go on holiday alone, so all my coffees are alone. And breakfast, lunch and dinner haha

LyndaSnellsSniff · 12/06/2025 18:07

It's a lovely thing to do. Every time I go into town, I buy a hot drink and go and sit in the castle grounds. It's blissful and I particularly enjoy watching the seasons change.

I find it weirder that people don't feel confident enough to do things solo. Being content in your own company is important.

I find it more weird that a PP said you should be doing chores instead of "wasting time" in cafes.

ERthree · 12/06/2025 18:13

I go to the theatre on my own or pop into a pub for a drink on my own so goodness knows what your Husband would think of me.

Going for a coffee is weird, going a pint, on the other hand...

😂🍺
