Rude to answer the phone

Goldielocks2p22 · 06/06/2025 17:22

Went for a catch up with a friend to get drinks. Another friend rings her and she answers then continues to spend 45 minutes on the phone to this person.

Surely I’m not the only person who wouldn’t answer the phone if I’d agreed to meet someone for drinks or food?

I would answer the phone, to make sure nothing was wrong, but I'd cut the call off. Didn't you pull her up about ten minutes into the call?

Spies · 06/06/2025 17:24

Of course it's rude but I can't believe you sat there and let her talk on the phone for 45 minutes! After 5 minutes and no signs of her finishing up the conversation I would have told her I was leaving and if she didn't hang up I would have left.

This. I’d only have answered to check nothing was wrong and to tell her I’d call her another time, but if I were the other person, I’d have necked my drink and gone in search of better company.

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 06/06/2025 17:27

I'd answer the phone to check nothing was bad then apologise, say I was with someone and that id ring them the next day.

Cynic17 · 06/06/2025 17:29

45 minutes?! FFS, she is incredibly rude. And I would have left her to it.

Redpeach · 06/06/2025 17:50

Very rude, even short calls annoy me, especially the kind where its just a partner asking where the ketchup is or some crap.

Blanknotebook · 06/06/2025 17:53

I would have gone home and left her to it. That was incredibly rude of her.

Nikki75 · 06/06/2025 17:56

Rude... you'd check all ok send a quick text say out with blah blah at the moment catch up later or tomorrow.
Why sit there for 45 mins though , I'd of gone home.

TatteredAndTorn · 07/06/2025 02:11

I can’t believe 5% of people thing you are unreasonable! Your friend was incredibly rude.

Maybe they mean that the OP was being unreasonable for putting up with situation. That they were unreasonable for not leaving the rude friend.

EFB2025 · 07/06/2025 02:20

This is so rude, I'd have been tempted to just leave quite frankly!

Painrelief · 07/06/2025 02:56

I can’t believe you sat there for 45 mins . I would’ve left her to her call as it’s so important .

Tourmalines · 07/06/2025 04:33

That’s disgustingly rude . I thought my friend was rude to go out for a vape when we went out for lunch . Both at the table , she had finished. I hadn’t, so off she went . I would have left if I was you .

JBPmum · 07/06/2025 04:48

It's very rude. I understand answering the phone if it's a child or your child's school or something, just to make sure everything is okay. Otherwise, ignore the phone and call them back later.

TheyFuckYouUpYourMamAndDad · 07/06/2025 05:16

Of course it’s rude - but why the hell did you sit there for 45 minutes?? 🤦‍♀️

Loulabelle1234 · 07/06/2025 15:09

I had a friend do this to me......I don't bother with her now. I would never be so rude. I had to sit there as she had picked me up and I was miles from home!

OnlyHasEyesForLoki · 07/06/2025 15:20

I would have got up and left!

Once a friend did this to me in a pub, let me buy the first round then disappeared. 40 minutes later I found her outside talking to another group of people on her second drink which she’d no doubt got someone else to buy (she was famous for never buying a round). I said I’m going home and she said “oh don’t you know anyone here?” Never again!!!

Tagyoureit · 07/06/2025 15:22

Answering the phone wasn't rude, it could have been an emergency but spending the next 44 minutes on the phone definitely was.

What did you say to her?

Velmy · 07/06/2025 15:47

Incredibly rude, but there's no way I'd have sat there for 45 minutes!

FoodAppropriation · 07/06/2025 15:50

Incredibly rude

I would answer the phone for my kids or someone who was in charge of my kids at that time, but anything else would wait.

if it's important, people add a text or whatsapp. Phone calls can wait.
STAYING on the phone means she doesnt' want to see you, that's horrible.

WetBandits · 07/06/2025 15:52

No way would I have sat there for 45 minutes!

If my phone rang while I was out with a friend and there was a chance the person calling needed to speak to me urgently, I’d excuse myself to briefly answer, check nothing was wrong and then tell the caller I would speak to them later, then apologise to my friend after taking the call. 10 seconds, maximum!

FoodAppropriation · 07/06/2025 15:52

How many "emergencies" do you actually get a phone call about every day, really? I am sure all your phone calls can wait! People managed without smart phones for decades.

Unless you are on call at work possibly.

saltinesandcoffeecups · 07/06/2025 15:52

I would have called her myself after about 5 min 😁

But yes it’s rude and yes you should have said something.

What did you say to her?

Do you friends have emergencies that you need to answer, as opposed to the emergency services?
If it's important they'll call again or send a message.

However, it's not a problem to answer just to say I'm busy now and I'll call you back later. Staying on the call for so long was very rude.

I had a friend who used to do this, but it was 20 years ago!

Itiswhysofew · 07/06/2025 15:55

Was it a mutual friend that you both talked to? Bad manners, regardless.
