Is it the shorts or me?

Went to put my denim shorts on this weekend, they are size 14 and were uncomfortably tight 😔
went to pick up a cheap pair from Primark. Upon trying on the 16 & 18, they are both way too tight, more so than my original size 14. My size 14 fit in October.

What is happening? Do I need a size 20?! Have I gone from a size 14 to 20 in that time.
I don’t understand because aren’t Primarks clothes usually larger?

Feel really down

Primark sizing is massive. Sorry.

weigh yourself?

BournardTourney · 01/06/2025 21:25

Best thing to do is forget shops as sizing varies massively. Better idea is to get a tape measure and find out your measurements in inches and then search online what size that translates to

I know! That’s what is confusing. Original shorts from there and only a bit tight, the size 18 wouldn’t do up

Primark sizing can vary - it's certainly not always massive imho. Do your other clothes from October fit you?

GreenDragonisLoose · 01/06/2025 21:34

In Primark I can be a size 6 or a 12, I wouldn't go by their sizing!

Dartmoorcheffy · 01/06/2025 21:39

In my experience primark sizing is always smaller

SoSoLong · 01/06/2025 21:40

Primark sizes are weird. I bought size 10 jeans and size 14 shorts in there at the same time.

I disagree, it completely depends on the item - it’s never consistent with primark

Vacuummyblub · 01/06/2025 21:44

I'm usually size 12, put on some baby weight and now find I can't fit in to size 14s either but size 16s are waaay to big. It's like there needs to be a size in-between. This was H&M and Peacocks plus some charity shop stuff.
I think it is just wildly inconsistent sizing.

Eerilyquiettodayontheculdesac · 01/06/2025 21:44

In my experience, Primark have always been bigger, since I put on weight I find it easier to find comfier clothes. I can accept being a 16, but going to a 20 or more has shocked me, never been that in my life

OP posts:
BogRollBOGOF · 01/06/2025 21:47

I seem to need bigger sizes in shorts than trousers. I know I'm a pear so shorts cover most of my widest zone, but it doesn't seem to tally with my trouser sizing.

Ultimately a good fit matters more than an arbitary number.

Same. And also inconsistent. I remember buying 2 pairs of shorts for one of my kids. They were identical and according to the label were the same size, but one pair fit and one was way too small. I can't fit in my usual size 12 jeans in there either. And don't get me started on the bras. According to them I must be something like a double H.

Sibc465 · 01/06/2025 21:49

Primark are way of. 14 drown me 12 are fine in the bum 10/12 in top drown me… I’m tall and slim.

ignore the size go with what suits/fits! Also new look Iv always found good for jeans ect. X

My DS bought trousers there that said 38 waist. He's usually 32. On physically measuring the trousers they are 32.5 inches.

Never trust Primark sizes

Go to Matalan for your shorts. Their sizes are generous I find.

It used to be, but I think they adjusted it a couple of years ago. They promoted it and I feel things became smaller then.

feelingbleh · 01/06/2025 21:56

Denim is a pain to get to fit right I'm anywhere from a 12 to 16 dependant on shop and also the style. I just think don't worry about the number and try a few on and what fits, fits.

PositivityVibes · 01/06/2025 21:58

Measure your waist then measure the shorts, ignore the size - what fits, fits

Kellywiththelegs · 01/06/2025 22:03

Sizing is so inconsistent, I bought a skirt in Next size 10 fitted perfectly so decided to get it in another colour and that skirt which is the supposedly the same size is too tight across my hips.

parietal · 01/06/2025 22:27

i have 2 pairs of jeans from the same shop same design purchased 1 month apart (1 black, 1 blue). one pair is a size 14 and is too big. the others are size 16 and are too small!

sizing is crazy!

Mrsmouse71 · 01/06/2025 22:36

Primark sizing is shocking, my 14 yr old has size 6, 12 & 14 jeans, xs tops, medium skirts!!

mepipesneedlagging · 01/06/2025 23:55

Agree that Primark sizes are huge in the main.
The flattery sizes also apply to M&S, Asda & Tesco.
The slightly higher end stuff (Zara springs to mind) have genuine sizes in my experience.

beetr00 · 02/06/2025 00:04

@Eerilyquiettodayontheculdesac Please don't focus on the sizing, just buy what fits you.

I'm a size 14 and had to get a size 18 in Primark!
