RH musical at the theatre. Sing-along yes or no? Usually I say definitely not at musicals but with RH I'm unsure. If anyone wants to post some pictures of tim Curry to add some bite I wouldn't say no.

So question is AIBU to make an exception to my no singing at musicals and all people who do should be shot at dawn policy?

Absolutely! Extra prizes for the best shout outs, and don't forget rice and newspaper!

TooManyCupsAndMugs · 19/05/2025 19:09

It very much thrives on audience participation- sing, dance, throw rice and shout "slut" at the correct place! 🤣

Butterbly · 19/05/2025 19:10

I'm a real stickler for theater etiquette

Rocky horror is a show with its own rules! Its where i would completely expect it. I would gauge it while you are there though, because sometimes the west end touring productions don't have the same atmosphere

Whatsgoingonherethenagain · 19/05/2025 19:11

Who are you dressing as?

it would be odd if you didn’t sing and dance along. That’s the whole point!

DrMadelineMaxwell · 19/05/2025 19:11

You only really sing along with the Time Warp in the main body of the show.
There's a medley at the end where it's up on your feet and sing along. But not many people would sing along with any of the other songs.

Lots of shout outs though. And props depending on whether you get the 'die hard' fans in or not.

Ponoka7 · 19/05/2025 19:12

It's a sing-along and the only musical I get up to dance to. Also a nod to the theme, with your outfit, if possible.

Samuraipizzacat · 19/05/2025 19:14

100% sing along, shout out, props and the works.
Saying that I once went to a show in London and the vibe was so bad; someone even got kicked out for throwing playing cards in the air at the appropriate time.

NamechangeJunebaby · 19/05/2025 19:18

Yes! It’s always a song a long at RHS. Also big on participation - do you know who you’re going to dress up as yet?

minnienono · 19/05/2025 19:21

There’s certain points you stand up and dance but people didn’t sing when I last went

AllPlayedOut · 19/05/2025 19:23

I love RHPS but I’d enjoy it much more without the audience participation. I know that it’s traditional but the novelty wore off after the first time I saw it. Now I just find it irritating. I’m fine with people dancing to Time Warp but the constant shouting is so annoying.

Megifer · 19/05/2025 19:24

OMG Tim Curry in suspenders.....🤤

ButteryLightHouse · 19/05/2025 19:25

Obviously you need to dress up. Take water pistol, newspaper, cards and rice. Make sure you know when to shout slut etc. Bonus points if you have an original heckle and make the cast break character or forget their lines.
But it's generally just the time warp that you sing (and dance) along to. But it was 20 years ago when I last saw it

Bikergran · 19/05/2025 19:44

I've never been to a live RH show, but I used to own a red corset, which went to 3 shows on 3 different friends......🤣

user1471553234 · 19/05/2025 20:21

Thanks.

I know, Tim curry in suspenders is the best. Especially when hes crying at the end.

Thinking of going as Colombia, I always liked her.

Went just a few weeks ago - brilliant evening but things have changed.....

No throwing of rice or water - "elf n safe-t" - don't you know

lots of shout outs - and a brilliant narrator who gave as good as she got!

Lots of dressing up - high quality too

some singing (Time Warp obviously) and dancing at the end

There are show were full participation is advertised and encouraged but others where there's a bit of restraint

Iloveeverycat · 19/05/2025 20:57

I have been to a lot with my DDs we always dress up. We don't take any props. We sing along to all songs but not loudly and do most of the call outs. It the best eving ever. Can't wait for the tour to come back to our town.

CatOnAHotRadiator · 19/05/2025 21:13

Might to book some tickets again. I go as Colombia. I keep the outfit in the loft and crack it out as needed 🤣

go. Sing and dance. Enjoy!

ButteryLightHouse · 19/05/2025 21:17

We're not going again until DH feels confident to go as rocky. 🥹

TunnocksOrDeath · 19/05/2025 21:21

It works a bit like panto: you shout at the right bits, and listen in the other bits.
don't throw rice though... I know its a thing, but have some pity for the cleaners !!!

Chloe793 · 19/05/2025 21:21

We saw it in Bristol with Dom Jolly narrating and a few people heckling him in a hilarious way - not from the audience participation script though from what I've seen of that. We went again a couple years later and there was no heckling/audience participation and it wasn't quite as funny.

As to singing I would just see what others do. Have a great time!

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 19/05/2025 21:22

I went years ago for a work night out. I'm still mentally scarred after seeing my very just so male boss in stocking and suspenders, lab coat and yellow marigolds!

Needmorelego · 19/05/2025 21:24

Dress up, sing, dance, shout out the lines..... it's compulsory 😁
Yes - no rice or water pistols allowed these days but other than that it's THE BEST EXPERIENCE EVER IN THE WORLD 🫦

Edited

I saw it during the original years in London in the late 70s! There was no interval, no audience dressing up, no shouting out - you sat and watched, like at any other theatrical performance. I saw it quite a few times over the years, before the audience participation that began in the cinema showings in America made their way over and into the theatre here.

I stopped going when the shouting was just about all you could hear.
