To be SO worried nothing on scan at 4 1/2 weeks?

SillySally999 · 14/05/2025 20:15

I have a history of miscarriage so was referred to EPU on Monday when I found out I was pregnant

I know 100% I ovulated 26/04 which would make me 4 1/2 weeks
Clearable digital moved from 1-2 weeks to 2-3 weeks yesterday so I thought all was going in the right direction but a scan today showed nothing

The sonographer was really harsh - said thick lining but could be for any reason and now doing bloods today and Friday to see if HCG doubles and then will do a repeat scan

I have seen a sac before at this early on but a lot of googling says 5 weeks onwards is when you would expect to see this normally

I’m 40 and this is a very much wanted baby so in a right panic now and wish they didn’t scan me at all

Our EPAU don't scan before 6w for this very reason. Very difficult to see anything before then.

HollyGolightly4 · 14/05/2025 20:18

I've got nothing to add, but I'm sorry you are so worried, it seems so early to scan and I can only imagine the nerves and the emotions. Deep breaths, you can only control the controllable 💐

BunsenBurnerBaby · 14/05/2025 20:19

Hand hold. Only time will tell. I had multiple early losses (more than 11) so have been there. I now have 3 DC (twins the second time). Try to distract yourself until you know more.

MidnightPatrol · 14/05/2025 20:27

I’m surprised they scanned you really - it was most likely you wouldn’t be able to see anything.

What was the rationale?

AreYouBrandNew · 14/05/2025 20:35

In the kindest possible way, I think you have scanned too early. Wait another three weeks to 7.5 weeks

Didntask · 14/05/2025 20:36

Was it an abdominal scan or dildo-cam?

YouBoggleMyMind · 14/05/2025 20:36

It’s too early. A scan at 6 weeks at the earliest for this reason. Good luck 🤞🏻

TheatreTraveller · 14/05/2025 20:37

As others have said, far too early to scan. I waited until 6.5wks for my early scans for exactly this reason, it just causes further anxiety and worry.
Fingers crossed 🤞🏻

I have no idea
I was 100% expecting them to suggest bloods and so was really surprised when they called me for a scan as I am very sure os ovulation as have been tracking for months so I am 4.3 today

3 miscarriages in the last year so I gather high risk but no confusion about dates so I wish they hadn’t done a scan which has just increased my worry 😢

😂 transvaginal - so yes dildo cam!

OP posts:
Didntask · 14/05/2025 20:42

I had dildo cam at 5+4 and could barely see anything. Just give it a couple more weeks 💐

HollyGolightly4 · 14/05/2025 20:43

Dildocam is hilarious 😂😆

AloeVera889 · 14/05/2025 21:24

Too early. I held out until 7 weeks as everything I read said that before 6 weeks you may not see anything at all.

SillySally999 · 14/05/2025 21:32

I just wish they hadn’t done the scan as I was feeling really positive until today.

Strong symptoms - sore boobs, nausea and tiredness and lines all very very dark and clearblue going from 1-2 to 2-3

Annoyed with myself really for agreeing to the scan

Wishing you lots of luck OP.

SeaShelli · 14/05/2025 21:42

My now 3 year-old didnt 'show' on a scan till 8 weeks. Sending lots of love

Overthebow · 14/05/2025 21:45

It’s too early. You’d expect to see a sack and yolk sac by 5.5 weeks, but 4.5 may be too early to see anything at all. I’d get a red scan at 6 weeks.

SillySally999 · 15/05/2025 07:10

Thanks
Hopefully the bloods have doubled between yesterday and Friday x

I had this in both my pregnancies, during the fifth week. I was sent home and told to come back in two weeks, and both times everything was fine. I have to go up now and scrape the resulting teenagers out of bed.

They shouldn't have scanned and put you in this position.

Hang in there.

CantFollowInstructions · 15/05/2025 07:38

That seems way too early. I did IVF and they had me come in for an early ultrasound every time (due to increased risk of ectopic pregnancy with IVF) but the absolute earliest was 5+4! Even then there wasn't a great deal that see - just a gestational sac really. I'm now 20+1 weeks with my current pregnancy - my first ultrasound from 5+4 weeks is literally a circle 😅.

justkeepswimingswiming · 15/05/2025 07:41

Why an earth did they scan you so early? It’s normal not be able to see anything at that stage all they’ve done is cause you to worry needlessly!

Ddakji · 15/05/2025 07:45

I’ve had many miscarriages and was never scanned before 6 weeks so hopefully that’ll be the reason why. In our EPU the sonographers were all male research scientists with zero bedside manner (though the clinic reception staff could be lovely) so I understand that completely! Though the one who scanned me when I was pregnant with DD was called Jesus so I took that as a good sign!

Fingers crossed and best of luck.

I had this with my soon to be abruptly woken up 5 year old.. have a clotting disorder so need to be out on blood thinners as soon as I’m confirmed pregnant to stay pregnant. Had one loss at 8 weeks in the may, pregnant again in the September, chemical pregnancy really as I bled about 6 days later at about 5 weeks. Next month I just did a test on the day period was due, blazing positive. Wasn’t expecting it at all and epu arranged and can that day in case it was retained products or similar. Couldn’t see anything, rescan for 2 weeks and 48 hour bloods done (I was given the thinners just in case but was told gently not to be hopeful) second draw results showed that my levels had tripled! Rescan showed a little beating heart. Scanned again about 2 weeks later and measured 9 weeks!!! Actually walked out the place that time and rang my partner and said “I think we are having a baby yano!”. He laughed and said “told ya!”
Sending positive thoughts, all the best!!!
