To be SO worried nothing on scan at 4 1/2 weeks?

SillySally999 · 14/05/2025 20:15

I have a history of miscarriage so was referred to EPU on Monday when I found out I was pregnant

I know 100% I ovulated 26/04 which would make me 4 1/2 weeks
Clearable digital moved from 1-2 weeks to 2-3 weeks yesterday so I thought all was going in the right direction but a scan today showed nothing

The sonographer was really harsh - said thick lining but could be for any reason and now doing bloods today and Friday to see if HCG doubles and then will do a repeat scan

I have seen a sac before at this early on but a lot of googling says 5 weeks onwards is when you would expect to see this normally

I’m 40 and this is a very much wanted baby so in a right panic now and wish they didn’t scan me at all

I’m hoping the fact clearblue shifted from 1-2 to 2-3 is showing an increase in HCG as when I had my previous miscarriage it didn’t move from 1-2 and then shortly after went to not pregnant 😢

Dildo-cam made me chuckle! 🤭

Fingers crossed for you @SillySally999🤞🏻

Fingers crossed OP!

I also have a blood clotting disorder so the RMC wanted to confirm being pg asap in order to get me on heparin, although i wasnt seen until 5 weeks either time

I still am shocked at how rude the sonographer was - it would have made such a difference if she had explained in a kinder manner that it may just be too early instead of reeling off the negatives and saying that the uterus lining can be thick for many reasons when I asked - I only asked as this was mentioned in my last early scan as a definitive telling sign!

At 4.3 you're kind of only pregnant on a cellular, hormonal level. That's to say that your blood, your HcG levels, your early symptoms etc all show that you're pregnant because what's being 'measured' is tiny changes to the cells and things that make up your (and your baby's) body. You're having lovely positive results in all these areas, which is great and what you'd expect. What you wouldn't expect at 4.3, when you're only really pregnant in a tiny, almost undetectable way, would be to actually see something on a scan. So in that sense, it's totally normal that there was nothing there except thickened lining, which points to the fact that your baby is in there, nestled away in the lining, growing rapidly and making your HcG levels go up, which you're seeing on your tests. Everything sounds exactly on track.

This is such a lovely reassuring post
Are you in the medical field?
I wish the sonographer had said anything like this and I would have left so much happier!

No I'm not, I've just had two pregnancies, including one in lockdown where support was absent, and I have really terrible health anxiety. I regularly thank my lucky stars I haven't had to deal with pregnancy loss because it must be almost impossible to get through each day with the worry of it happening again. But from everything you've said, it all sounds ok so far!

YellowDuster12 · 15/05/2025 10:54

Ah I'm so sorry OP. I was high risk of ectopic so I had my first scan at 4-5wk, and they could just see the sac and yolk. But you are sooooo early days here! It is really expected that they wouldn't see anything at this point. Good luck <3

I had really awful rude experiences with my early scans. I'd been told I needed them due to having stage IV endo, a very recent surgery, high risk of ectopic. But the sonographer seemed determined to make out like I was just a hysterical anxious person demanding them for no reason! I went in as advised after some bleeding and she said 'come on now, it's not good for baby to be scanned so much' and she deliberately wouldn't let me see the screen, just said 'things look okay' as if she didn't want to reward me for going in. I honestly wondered how someone could be so cruel in that job.

I’m so sorry - that sounds awful and very similar to yesterday

She turned the screen around completely whereas the one I had a few months ago when I sadly had a miscarriage was so different - she showed me the screen, the little sac and although reiterated it was very early, said the lining thickening was a good sign and even told me which ovary I had released an egg from

Im dreading going back if they ask me to depending on bloods

OP I’m so sorry that you’re going through this anxious time.

After losing 2 babies I was advised to have an early scan at 5 weeks (I paid for this private) and my sonographer was also really cold. She told me it’s ridiculous to have a scan so early, made it out like the pregnancy probably wasn’t viable. Tried scanning my belly first and saying nope can’t see anything you’ve obviously got your dates wrong or tested too early. I then asked for internal scan and could see sac.

Really not what you want and obviously doesn’t help your anxiety.

That being said I will never have a scan before 6 weeks now as sometimes it being too early to know is also unhelpful.

I know it’s really bloody hard but put the tests away and get a scan booked for 6 weeks xx

I’m honestly not sure why people go into these job roles when empathy and compassion is clearly needed and si many don’t appear to have any!

I’ll know about the bloods by Monday so will see what they advise then but if they don’t want to re scan I’ll have a private at 7 weeks when hopefully I’ll see more x

Yes I agree, when I lost twins the sonographer told me they had both passed away but “it’s a good thing other wise you might of had 2 disabled kids”

Wow, I hope you complained. Sorry for your loss.

Rabidbunnyrabbit · 15/05/2025 16:19

My SIL was told their third strapping young man was probably a cyst. My niece was told her youngest was probably a fibroid. Both early scans. Both quite mistaken.

Hold steady. I know it's horribly stressful but try and remain calm. Give it a few weeks.

I understand, to a small degree. I got told in April I need an urgent jelly scan on my heart and got an appointment for the end of May. It can be upsetting having to wait when you are desperate for the outcome you need and/or desire with all of your heart.

I hope you get your heart's desire. 🤞

Hey I know this is a few months old going through similar any updates? 🙏🏼

I am so.sorry about your previous miscarriages. I had 2 miscarriages and then saw a specialist, and he said that as soon as I fell pregnant again he would scan me. He scanned me at 5/6 weeks and could see a sac, but said it was too early to see if there was a heartbeat. So I had a very long 2 week wait, but he scanned me at 8 weeks and there was a clear heartbeat. He said if they had scanned at 7 weeks, it may still not have been visible. It was a VERY long wait in-between scans and I was absolutely riddled with anxiety, but it did all work out. So I just wanted to reassure you that it may simply be too early, so please don't give up hope xxx
