We are due to fly to Portugal (Faro) on 11th May from Stansted. I have just seen the news re the power outage across Spain and Portugal and I’m fully panicking. It’s only 12 days til we fly - is it likely to be sorted by then? We’ve booked a package holiday with on the beach and I’m starting to hugely panic that we won’t be able to fly 😩

The lights are back on, you will be fine.

holidaypanic25 · 29/04/2025 06:27

Is that in Portugal @sashh? Are flights up and running again? 😬

It's not yet clear what caused this but 12 days is a long time. I think you'll be OK.

Do you have travel insurance?

Amba1998 · 29/04/2025 06:28

Given that power is back on less than 24 hours later I can’t see how you will be effected in 2 weeks time

holidaypanic25 · 29/04/2025 06:29

@Amba1998. i didn’t read that power was back? I read it could take “up to a week” for Portugal. Hence my panic in case it took longer. We’ve been saving for this holiday since October, to not be able to go would be so upsetting

@Leafy74yes we have insurance

I'm going on the 5th and I'm not stressed. Of course the power will be back on by then.

StarlightLady · 29/04/2025 06:32

It is likely that a number of aircraft will be out of position for a few days but l would think given the length of time before you go, you’ll be fine.

As always, double check your flight status before you leave for the airport.

Have a lovely time. x

holidaypanic25 · 29/04/2025 06:32

@Sugarnspicenallthingsnaice are you flying into Faro?

OP posts:
Squirrelblanket · 29/04/2025 06:32

A week is shorter than 12 days, chill.

Sugarnspicenallthingsnaice · 29/04/2025 06:34

holidaypanic25 · 29/04/2025 06:32

@Sugarnspicenallthingsnaice are you flying into Faro?

No, but most of Portugal is back online already.

Most was back on yesterday. The “week” being referred to is for the impact not for the power to be restored. e.g. catching up on things that couldn’t be done yesterday etc. like M&S who still can’t process all orders while they recover from their cyber attack. But not all flights were even cancelled yesterday, most airports ran fine on back up generators.

waxymoron · 29/04/2025 06:39

We're about to leave for Portugal. It all seems fine

SallyWD · 29/04/2025 06:40

I have family in Portugal.power came back last night.

JustMyView13 · 29/04/2025 06:45

It’s almost 2 weeks away, I think you’ll be absolutely fine.

ThatShyRoseViper · 29/04/2025 06:52

7 days is fewer than 12 days.

balloonraces · 29/04/2025 06:56

I think it’ll be more knock on effect of flights being rescheduled and cancelled, but that’ll only be a few days op, I imagine you’re fine !!

Skigal86 · 29/04/2025 07:04

I have a holiday home in the Algarve and we have guests arriving tomorrow, I was a bit nervous but in our area the local Facebook groups are saying power came back on about 11pm last night. Faro airport was operating mostly normally yesterday with only a handful of flights cancelled. The report I read said they were prioritising restoring power to the north (Lisbon, Porto and surrounding areas) and the south (Algarve) where most people are, if it does take a few days it’s more likely to be in the rural areas in between.

fungibletoken · 29/04/2025 07:09

Think about it this way, OP - if they were still without power on any significant scale by that point then it would be a very serious situation. I expect you're going to be just fine. Have a lovely hol!

soupyspoon · 29/04/2025 07:12

It will have resolved itself and you have travel insurance in any case presumably

We have family in Spain and yesterday she couldnt even get out of the garage as its all electric, all the apartment entrances are operated electrically, it was a nightmare with the kids, nursery, cooking etc

Zanzara · 29/04/2025 07:17

I am writing this from Spain OP. Our power came back on at past midnight last night, and I currently fully anticipate flying back to the UK today.

The aircraft that fell out of the sky when the power went off aren't but the ones that were on the ground at the time are ok.

SnakesAndArrows · 29/04/2025 07:28

I am in a resort just West of Faro at the moment.

Flights were coming in and leaving all yesterday afternoon and evening, despite the fact we had no power between midday and 9pm. They are doing the same this morning.

I am fully expecting our flight home on Saturday to be on schedule.

Yellowtracktor · 29/04/2025 07:34

My parents flew out at 7am this morning. You'll be fine.

Luminousnose · 29/04/2025 07:35

My daughter is in northern Portugal. She flew to Amsterdam yesterday evening. It was a nightmare of a day, but most international flights went - albeit a lot of them were delayed. You’ll be fine.
