Arghh will this affect our holiday?!

We are due to fly to Portugal (Faro) on 11th May from Stansted. I have just seen the news re the power outage across Spain and Portugal and I’m fully panicking. It’s only 12 days til we fly - is it likely to be sorted by then? We’ve booked a package holiday with on the beach and I’m starting to hugely panic that we won’t be able to fly 😩

Thanks to everyone who posted a helpful message without being sarcastic or unpleasant, appreciate that. Mind is at rest, thanks ☺️

you need to calm down. if a whole country doesnt have power for the next ten days then they will have bigger problems than you missing your holiday.

User19977999 · 29/04/2025 08:28

I am in Lisbon right now. Flight was cancelled and yesterday was chaos but flights are now returning but you will be fine!

ButFirstCovfefe · 29/04/2025 08:29

I have immediate family in Faro.
All is back up and running (I believe bigger cities might still be having some issues - well, last night they were).

If you’re concerned then just make sure you have euros in cash and once you’re there grab some bottled water to keep in your room.

Think about it this way, OP - if they were still without power on any significant scale by that point then it would be a very serious situation. I expect you're going to be just fine. Have a lovely hol!

Yep, if the power was still out 12 days later, the world probably has bigger problems!

Emeraldiisland · 29/04/2025 08:45

I think you'll be okay. I did hear that trains are still not running normally but I imagine that will be sorted today. I'm sure on the news this morning they said flights were nearby back to normal already.
12 days I imagine everything will be back to normal. I can understand you worrying though, it's rubbish when a holiday gets spoiled.
But I honestly think it'll be back to normal long before then.

Bonbonvanilla · 29/04/2025 08:59

If they can't get the power up in 12 days there are far bigger problems than your holiday.

I’m sure you are right that everything will be fine. But Euros in cash would not make much difference in most establishments if there’s no power to open a till.

The bigger problem with lengthy power cuts is refrigerated and frozen food going off. Not to mention wine not being chilled 🤩.

I am living in Spain, Euros in cash definitely did make a difference yesterday.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 29/04/2025 12:18

I’m flying out next Wednesday and am not concerned at all.
i would be more worried if I’d booked with OTB as it only needs one part if your booking to go wrong for it all to be affected. Good job your trip is nearly 2 weeks away. Have a great time

tiutinkerbell · 29/04/2025 12:34

It came back on last night (live in Portugal) - if you aren't coming until 11th May you have nothing to worry about.

Gemütlich81 · 29/04/2025 12:49

I very much doubt that countries like Spain and Portugal would be out of power for more than a day let alone 12 days!

YouknowIknowbest · 29/04/2025 13:19

I’m quite sure OP is very aware there are bigger problems going on in the world, honestly some people just ooze “smart arse” mentality🤓

OP might need this break as an opportunity to heal after a bereavement or it could be their first holiday in years, or maybe they’ve just been working god damn hard and need a bloody break!

Enjoy your holiday OP, I’m travelling to Portugal too next week and was equally as concerned it might impact my break (not as concerned as I am about the state of the world atm, but I’d have created a whole new post about that if I wanted advice 😂). It looks like we’ll be having some lovely weather…and don’t forget to carry plenty of cash 😉

holidaypanic25 · 29/04/2025 18:18

@YouknowIknowbest thank you! Honestly you can’t post anything these days can you without ridiculous digs🙄 and yes- particularly shitty start to this year for our family for multiple reasons that I don’t want to go into (suffice to say it’s been very traumatic), so we are utterly desperate for this break that we’ve saved for 7 months for. Thanks for your sensible input and for making me smile! 😃

Clearly l assumed wrongly on that one! Sorry! I bow to the judgement of the woman on the spot. I assume they all ended up with a drawer full of cash?

@Amba1998. i didn’t read that power was back? I read it could take “up to a week” for Portugal. Hence my panic in case it took longer. We’ve been saving for this holiday since October, to not be able to go would be so upsetting

How about a thought for the Portuguese caught up in all this!

Most tills can be opened manually without the need for a power source. There will either be a lever u dee the drawer or a cylinder lock which opens with a key.

This. I can’t actually believe someone is panicking over a holiday, not even contemplating how bad it would be for the world if the entire country hadn’t had the power back in 12 days time.

Now I’ve heard it all.

holidaypanic25 · 01/05/2025 06:15

@UnstablePelican
as I said, we’ve had a very traumatic start to the year as a family and have put all of our spare cash into this holiday as a much needed break, also our little one would be devastated as it’s their first holiday. If you can’t “understand” why that’s upsetting to think something might prevent that much needed break that’s taken 7 month for us to pay for from happening, then I’m sorry you’re so incapable of empathy. Have a nice day ☺️

I’m not. I would have lots of empathy for the people of Spain if they had no power for two weeks or more. Because that would suggest something seriously bad is happening to the world, and a holiday would be the very least of our worries. Have a nice day yourself.

SapphireSeptember · 01/05/2025 18:59

@holidaypanic25 Hopefully you'll definitely be able to go and have a lovely time! Yes it would be upsetting to miss a holiday. I can feel sorry for the people of Spain and Portugal having no power and the OP potentially missing out on her holiday at the same time. Shocking I know...

holidaypanic25 · 01/05/2025 19:00

@UnstablePelicanmaybe start your own thread about your concerns about that, then? 🤷‍♀️

Op - my daughter is flying into Faro as I type. I’ll let you know, if you want - how things are going. She’s meeting friends out there and said this morning before she left, that she hadn’t heard of any issues.

holidaypanic25 · 01/05/2025 19:36

@Aurora2023 ah that would be great, thank you! ☺️
