Plenty of moral corruption in the world, so that’s alright then? I am afraid I have much higher standards which is why I am not religious / church goer as it would involve lowering my moral standards and principles.

RedRosesPinkLilies · 23/04/2025 22:37

@Ellinor Too funny to respond to
Of course it’s not alright. But your posts are anti RC, and that’s all there is to it. There is plenty moral corruption in the world. Plenty child abuse etc. Evil people everywhere. Blame the person. Maybe RC didn’t believe it was happening. People didn’t believe Jimmy Savilke was abusing children. It’s a part of our hideous history, but it’s not just the RC Church. doesn’t make it right. But not the point of this chat.

You really don’t care that the Pope has died. Have you ever read his books? Do you know how he admitted to his own mistakes, how much he apologised and grieved about the child abuse that happened before he was pope?

It’s basically just a chance to attack an institution that you have a grudge against. Go and attack the BBC, the Anglican Church, teachers that take advantage of their position- as happened to me. I don’t hold it against all of people in education- but boy did it screw up my life.

ExtraOnions · 23/04/2025 22:51

Who will be watching the funeral?

Catholic here, and I’ll be watching.

I’m wearing black for the whole of the official mourning period (much to the entertainment of the none-believers in the house)

I’ll be interested to see how different it is to the previous ones.

I’m #TeamTagle

RedRosesPinkLilies · 23/04/2025 23:14

@ExtraOnions Im unlikely to watch the full funeral as away for the weekend. But will watch highlights. Or maybe in catch up

I need to look up Cardinal Tagle - why him?

queenofthesuburbs · 23/04/2025 23:37

I shall record the funeral and watch it later.

I watched the documentary on him and it was interesting to see his personal and spiritual development over the years.

I still remember him coming onto the balcony in 2013 and his warmth and genuine humanity when he smiled at everyone and then said Buonasera. Just wonderful.

RIP Pope Francis

DeanElderberry · 24/04/2025 06:23

I probably will watch it - and/or listen to it, if RTÉ broadcast it.

Fair enough though, to placate the outraged, for those of us who are tentacles of the Vatican to identify ourselves. 🐙🇻🇦

How do we indicate a flag at half mast?

ExtraOnions · 24/04/2025 07:10

Tagle was at the Flame convention in London a couple of years ago, he was a great speaker, was lovely to our young people and Teachers (they all have a photo with him, which could be a collectors item!)

I also like that he’s on the progressive side, and seems more likely to carry on Pope Francis’s work.

DeanElderberry · 24/04/2025 07:52

I see he's committed to synodality, which is good, but opposed to change wrt contraception, which is not. Though synodality will eventually force a bit on honesty on that one. 🐙 🇻🇦

CruCru · 24/04/2025 09:29

I suspect Tagle is too young to be elected.

EasternStandard · 24/04/2025 09:49

I’ll try to watch some but am out which is a shame. I might ask dh to go instead.

I heard some singing on the radio from the Vatican it was so beautiful it made me teary.

So many must travelling there, I know someone who wanted to fly long haul to go but it’s probably near impossible to get accommodation.

Edited

There have been this massive “listening sessions” or “consultations” or whatever we are calling them. I think change must come from there. Tagle has said we need to make change, we live in a modern world.

i just don’t want some Conservative

There’s nothing quite like that very particular sound that the Vatican choir makes is there? It makes me feel teary too.

I sincerely hope the cardinals have all watched Conclave and don't consider electing the cardinal with several charges of sexual assault and misconduct.

Who is the cardinal who has several charges of sexual assault and misconduct who could potentially be elected as pope? I don't mean the character in Conclave, I mean among the current papabili.

In the BBC article someone linked to above I read this about one of the candidates:

"But in 2021 he offered to resign over serious mistakes in tackling child sexual abuse in Germany's Catholic Church. That resignation was rejected by Francis."

I really hope that this excludes him completely and that none of the cardinals will vote for him. Francis should have accepted his resignation.

Ah, I've just googled and a name comes up towards the top of the google search and that name is also being touted as a potential pope.

I really don't think they will vote for him.

deeahgwitch · 25/04/2025 14:44

Listening to the news on RTE - Irish national radio station - and a priest in Gaza, I think he was Italian, was interviewed. He said every night, before his most recent illness, Pope Francis called them (the community ) to see how they were. The last call they had from him was 2 days before he died. ❤️
He was special.

I don't watch funerals on tv, and only ever watched live streamed ones when Covid restrictions prevented my attending (each for people I have known since childhood).

I think that the next Pope should come from a developing country so his words will carry more weight on social justice issues, and given where the increase in vocations are. Cardinal Tagle would achieve this, and God willing be a Pope for many years.

RafaistheKingofClay · 25/04/2025 18:04

I’ll be watching. Might have to be doing some pre-guest cleaning at the same time though.

Lampzade · 25/04/2025 18:50

Interesting fact. The pope spoke or was conversant in seven languages

I think Pope John Paul II could speak even more, 12 I think.
Pope Benedict XVI also spoke several, though I'm not sure how many.

And all of them would have known Latin, Hebrew and Biblical Greek.

I think once you have studied those languages and a couple of foreign languages it becomes easier just to keep adding more because you have the knowledge of how to learn effectively, grammatical structures, roots of words etc.

I know a priest who arrived in the country I am living in with no knowledge of the language but fluent in 5 other languages. Within 3 weeks he could hold a conversation in the new language and within 2 months he was completely fluent and preaching.

DeanElderberry · 25/04/2025 19:39

One of our priests now has better Irish than many of us, though his heavily Indian-accented English takes some concentration. Between prayers and hymns we usually have mostly English but a bit of Irish, a bit of Latin, a bit of Greek - which is lovely.

Toddlerteaplease · 25/04/2025 22:56

I’m on nights so can’t watch the funeral or attend vespers or the requiem mass in my cathedral. Which is also my parish church. I’m really sad that I’ll miss it all. Had I known I’d have gone up to Liverpool for theirs last Tuesday. As I would like to attend something.

If you go on Sky News Live the stream is often 8 hours long so you might be able to wind back and watch the funeral if you're at home during that time window.
I'll be watching it tomorrow morning.
