I don't feel like using Ocado again

Gardenservant · 18/04/2025 21:39

Just read an interview with Justine Roberts, founder of MN in which she said that
Ocado – who had been excited about a partnership – abruptly pulled out, citing Mumsnet’s ‘hateful political views’ because she was standing up for women's rights to single sex spaces. I was just about to put in an order with Ocado which I use occasionally - they stock an item which is difficult to obtain elsewhere, but now I don't feel like ordering from them again. Do others feel that their behaviour was out of order?

I don't use Ocado, but I have been known to occasionally use Waitrose. I think Ocado is linked with them too? Or am I wrong ?

Used to be, now linked to m and s food

I agree. I cancelled my account earlier today.

The idea that Ocado are pedalling is dangerous nonsense and if we just shrug and say, 'I agree but I'll still use them' it means that they-and their supporters-will think that ordinary women will agree with them.

That is how they will spin it.

I suppose it's a good job that the suffragettes didn't think it was inconvenient to be jailed when they stood up for women's rights-it seems many of their descendants-modern women-won't even shop elsewhere as it's inconvenient.

What a shower of shite we've become.

Totally agree

ButtermilkYellow · 19/04/2025 12:40

So some people have a different view to you - so what? Where do you draw the line? Will you stop talking to family and friends who have different opinions?

To those who disagree with Ocado but who don't want to stop using them because it would be inconvenient-

Do you think that if the boot were on the other foot, that Ocado had said Trans Activists were hateful, that the Trans Lobby would simply shrug and say they that's a pity but we'll keep using them because they're convenient?

Well, I can answer that.

The Trans Activists would be outside their offices, picketing Ocado vans and totally boycotting them.

That's why the Trans Activists are listened to and why women have ended up in a situation where a court has had to say what a woman is and why even the prime minister of the land won't comment on the judgement.

It's because the Trans Activists make people frightened of them, won't take any shit and because many women -as seen here-won't do anything to help themselves.

This is what I find so incomprehensible.

An organisation we choose to hand my cash to, calls our (completely legitimate and legal views) “hateful”. That says they actively hate GC views. Why would anyone who holds GC views support that?

coldcallerbaiter · 19/04/2025 12:46

Ocado is not one person. A view would need to be a poll of all staff and shareholders. I doubt this poll would have a majority agreement with the current spouted sentiment.

beesandstrawberries · 19/04/2025 12:50

I don’t know why people bring politics into these big corporations. Like with things like McDonald’s being ‘cancelled’ because of Palestine. I have Ocado being delivered with the next few hours and I feel no shame. You not shopping with Ocado won’t make a difference. Do whatever you feel that goes with your personal believes but don’t think you not shopping with them will harm them as a company

Entirely possible.
But I don’t deal with individual staff. I buy from a company.
And that corporate body has said that GC views are “hateful”.
Those are my views and I’m upset to be characterised and stereotyped like that.
I won’t spend money with them.

You are entitled to take whatever view you like but if this was a “person” who said this to your face - how would you react? Would you be ok and brush it off? Or avoid them in future?

FlowerFairy12 · 19/04/2025 12:53

Don’t use them then, no-one is forcing you. I don’t understand threads like this.

Of course it can harm them and can make a difference.

Look at Bud Light sales.

Because it is exhausting to have to not use a service and find another over this nonsense. It’s a waste of everyone’s time that any of this was ever allowed and a court ruling had to tell us what we already knew. What’s next, cosmetic surgery to be an animal and be recognised as such. Don’t laugh, it’s just as stupid as this.

Oh, I agree with you, most people do. What I meant was, their ‘company’ opinion is bogus, speaking as an entity needs explanation - who thinks this at Ocado exactly?

TheSecondMrsCampbellBlack · 20/04/2025 11:36

Here’s the reply I had on asking to delete my account

“Thanks for reaching out to us.

These comments are not representative of us as a company, and we believe they were made by a temporary contractor who is no longer with the business. We apologise unreservedly to Mumsnet.

In the meantime, if you have any other questions, please get in touch. Otherwise, I hope you have a lovely day. Take care!”

I don’t agree with Ocado but I do believe they have a right to a view that differs from mine.

Do you also believe organisations have the right to hold racist views? Or is it just misogynistic views you are okay with?

@TeenLifeMum yes, I like to know the answer to that question from @Espressosummer

Had a reply from Ocado saying it was a temporary contractor and that the comments about women holding hateful trans views is not representative of them as a company -I believe others have had the same reply- and that they apologise unreservedly to Mumsnet.

That may be the case, or it may not be, but I shall wait until I see an Ocado advert on Mumsnet before opening my purse to them again.

The only way to make these companies who hate women pull their horns in, is for women to take back power and let them fall into financial chaos.

Women spend more with these companies than men, so the solution is in our own hands and, at the most, it just involves a bit of inconvenience. They just hope that we are too lazy or stupid to shut our purse and when they see that we're not they quickly backtrack.

IrisPallida · 22/04/2025 16:12

Yeah, I got the same message. However, for all I know, the message also came from a 'temporary contractor'. So no, it isn't enough.

They really underestimate how utterly, bloody fucked off with them I am.

Namzoxo · 23/04/2025 10:35

Where is this article? I have been trying to find it.

Exactly this!

Sadly it seems most women aren’t bothered or interested. We need a post office style drama to be commissioned- forget the public inquiry - and that might galvanise people
