I don't feel like using Ocado again

Gardenservant · 18/04/2025 21:39

Just read an interview with Justine Roberts, founder of MN in which she said that
Ocado – who had been excited about a partnership – abruptly pulled out, citing Mumsnet’s ‘hateful political views’ because she was standing up for women's rights to single sex spaces. I was just about to put in an order with Ocado which I use occasionally - they stock an item which is difficult to obtain elsewhere, but now I don't feel like ordering from them again. Do others feel that their behaviour was out of order?

But Ocado didn't believe that Mumsnet had a right to a view that differed from theirs. That lack of principle is why they shouldn't be used again.

I agree. I cancelled my account earlier today.

The idea that Ocado are pedalling is dangerous nonsense and if we just shrug and say, 'I agree but I'll still use them' it means that they-and their supporters-will think that ordinary women will agree with them.

That is how they will spin it.

I suppose it's a good job that the suffragettes didn't think it was inconvenient to be jailed when they stood up for women's rights-it seems many of their descendants-modern women-won't even shop elsewhere as it's inconvenient.

What a shower of shite we've become.

murasaki · 18/04/2025 23:35

I'd love to know how many accounts have been cancelled today. And the impact on share prices over the weekend. I had a look at the comments on the mail article and there were a lot of people there saying they'd stop too. Whether that's true or not is up for grabs but it's not been good press for them today whatever one may think of the Mail.

PickAChew · 18/04/2025 23:55

I've been using them much less, anyhow, but only because they've got so expensive and half my shopping arrives squashed.

Stopping entirely will be no hardship.

LoremIpsumCici · 18/04/2025 23:22

She has been politically active using the MN name and logo for years.

She’s been in the Telegraph, Times, and Daily Mail for a decade on the gender issue. And not as just Ms Roberts, but “Justine Roberts, founder of Mumsnet” even some of the headlines go “Founder of Mumsnet…”

So what? I also have read articles quoting her, and what she does is express what posters here have said. She doesn't dictate what views are on here.

Or maybe you missed some of the poll figures on the many, many threads about Wednesday's ruling.

Then we are in complete agreement.

my reaction of
Careful, MN hasn’t done any of that prior to Justine Roberts expressing political views on behalf of MN.

was to @HardyKoala who wrote:

I mean, do Ocado have the ‘right to a view’? Have they polled and discussed said view with all the shareholders and workers? If not, I’d suggest brands stay the fuck away from expressing political views. Especially if they don’t know what they’re on about

I object to them saying that unless any brand has polled and discussed said view with all shareholders and workers (or in case of MN all members) then they should “stay the fuck away from expressing political views”

I think koala is being extremely demanding and if you demand that of Ocado, then you’d be a hypocrite not to demand it of MN too.

IrisPallida · 19/04/2025 00:15

Except that she is doing exactly that - stating what views are expressed on here. Which has always been the value and clout of MN - the window into the views of millions of women. Or did I miss the bit where she solely expressed her own personal views?

This is not what Ocado (presumably and almost certainly) have done.

Aren’t Ocado claiming it was the views of a temporary contractor?
except it wasn’t just some one-off comment.

murasaki · 19/04/2025 00:23

Nobody pulls a potential advertising deal on the say so of one contractor. They must know no one believes the mealy mouthed non apology

Catlady63 · 19/04/2025 00:30

Blaming the temp was ridiculous- makes it sound like one junior staff member made the decision in a vacuum. Of course it would have been reported up the line, Mumsnet deal off as they are transphobic, and no one seems bothered to ask why permit women to discuss transgenderism is of itself transphobic.

Ocado obviously believed they couldn't risk losing the huge profits they make from their gender queer customers.

OneOfThoseOldFashionedWomen · 19/04/2025 00:34

Where I spend my money is something I can control, and I have also cancelled my Ocado account. I actually have less respect for them since blaming a contractor - at least own your viewpoint.

I am also going to move my Barclays account, currently looking where to move to.

A life long Flora user, I stopped for the same reasons.

Vaxtable · 19/04/2025 01:44

They are entitled to a view, I am entitled to disagree with that view and continue to use them as it suits me

LindorDoubleChoc · 19/04/2025 02:38

Anyone wishing to leave Barclays - I'd highly recommend First Direct. You can phone them and they answer the call and talk to you! It's like a miracle. Been with FD since they first started - maybe 30 ish years ago? - never had cause to complain. @OneOfThoseOldFashionedWomen.

Sesma · 19/04/2025 06:43

I'm surprised so many use them anyway, I had a free pass and my shopping was packed very badly, in the end I couldn't order half the stuff like Brie or trifles as it was squashed or upside down. It's packed by robots though so that is probably why

SlagPit · 19/04/2025 07:15

Don't use them then.

Serencwtch · 19/04/2025 07:46

SnailInMyGingerBeer · 18/04/2025 22:09

I don't use Ocado, but I have been known to occasionally use Waitrose. I think Ocado is linked with them too? Or am I wrong ?

Completely separate companies.

Ocado used to sell some Waitrose products & used to provide the online delivery service for Waitrose but doesn't anymore.

Waitrose & John Lewis partnership doesn't have an unblemished record on supporting women in the trans debate but is definitely the better option right now given what ocado have said!!

MrsMappFlint · 19/04/2025 08:05

To those who disagree with Ocado but who don't want to stop using them because it would be inconvenient-

Do you think that if the boot were on the other foot, that Ocado had said Trans Activists were hateful, that the Trans Lobby would simply shrug and say they that's a pity but we'll keep using them because they're convenient?

Well, I can answer that.

The Trans Activists would be outside their offices, picketing Ocado vans and totally boycotting them.

That's why the Trans Activists are listened to and why women have ended up in a situation where a court has had to say what a woman is and why even the prime minister of the land won't comment on the judgement.

It's because the Trans Activists make people frightened of them, won't take any shit and because many women -as seen here-won't do anything to help themselves.

FeelingLessTired · 19/04/2025 08:08

WilfredsPies · 18/04/2025 23:18

They’ve apologised and blamed a temporary contractor who is no longer with them. That has made me lose even more respect for them.

Barclays were named as blanking MN as well.

Exactly this. if they had apologised that would be one thing. To say 'that boy did it and then ran away' makes me think they are merely snivelling little cowards.

Sesma · 19/04/2025 08:23

There are lots of other online grocery shops so quite easy to just use another one. You might save some money as well

IthasYes · 19/04/2025 08:35

Their wording was too strong for mehateful views merely over wording in the equality act.
They strongly promote LGBT issues ( fine) and trans issues with colours and badges on their vans but when it comes to Justine merely mentioned the equality act, that's hateful?

As someone on twitter said why not show your solidarity with women by using suffragette colours on the Vans??

I am shocked it all passed me by to be honest

IthasYes · 19/04/2025 08:37

@MrsMappFlint yes because much of the language and violence against women threatened is similar to all male violence and Andrew Tate etc. everyone has been frightened

Absolutely! No more Ocado for us or any of my friends who use it. Talk about cut your nose off 🙄

TheSecondMrsCampbellBlack · 19/04/2025 10:49

I’ve emailed telling them to fuck off

Oh this made me laugh far more than it should.

They seemed to have played a blinder, and pissed both sides off it Twitter is anything to go by.

IthasYes · 19/04/2025 11:03

@LindorDoubleChoc completely agree about first direct, I'm very fussy and am super happy with them.
